본 연구의 목적은 지난 20여 년간 발표되었던 복식사 연구 논문의 연구방법을 검토, 분석함으로서 복식 연구의 학문적 기초를 다지며, 아울러 미래의 복식 연구가 나아가야 할 바람직한 연구 방향을 모색하는데 있다. 본 연구를 위하여 1977년부터 1996년 사이 미국의 복식관련 학술지에 발표된 총 34편의 복식 연구논문을 수집하여, 각 논문의 연구방법과 주제, 사용된 자료, 다른 학문과의 연계성에 관한 내용을 분석하였다. 본 논문에서는 복식연구의 방법을 질적(Qualitative)연구방법으로 서술형(Narrative)과 해석형(Interpretive), 그리고 양적(Quantitative) 연구방법의 세 가지 유형으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과에 의하면, 복식학자들은 복식사가 갖는 다른 여러 학문영역과의 연계성(Interdis-ciplinary nature)으로 인하여, 광대한 연구주제에 따라, 각종 연구자료를 이용하여, 여러 학문적 관점에서, 다양한 연구 방법을 적용시켜 왔던 것을 알 수 있다. 적절한 연구방법의 선택은 각 논문에 따라 연구자의 의도, 주어진 연구주제, 가능한 모든 자료를 근거로 하여 결정되어야 하며, 하나의 논문 내에서도 각 부분에 적합한 여러 연구방법을 병행하여 사용함으로서 가장 효과적으로 연구의 목적을 달성할 수 있어야 한다.

새로운 탄생을 위해 과거의 것을 재조합하는 역사적 절충주의는 오늘날 과거로 회귀하고픈 현대인들의 요구에 부합하며 환영받고 있다. 본 연구는 복식에 표현된 역사적 절충주의 양식을 파악하기 위해 건축을 통해 그 특성을 규명하고 이를 복식에 적용시켜 19세기 복식은 복식사 문헌을 바탕으로 20세기를 대표하는 1990년대의 복식은 $\ulcorner$콜렉션$\lrcorner$지를 중심으로 복식의 역사적 절충주의 양식을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 서로 다른 두 장르에서 펼쳐진 역사적 절충주의는 비슷한 시기가운데 1)형태 참고를 특징으로 하는 조형성, 2)장식적인 아름다움을 특징으로 하는 장식성, 3)새로운 재질과 발전된 기술을 기반으로 하는 기술성, 4)불투명한 시대 경향을 지시하는 모호성이라는 조형적 특성을 나타내었고, 이로 인해 건축과 복식의 문화적 공유성은 재확인되었다. 이처럼 복식의 역사적 절충주의를 통해, 과거의 힘이 무엇이며 현재에 어떠한 의미를 지니는가를 상기한다면 복식사의 중요성은 더욱 부각될 것이다.

The purpose of this study was to examine past trends in the subject matters, authorship, research methods, references by type of source, and publication year of references for articles on history of costume and design and aesthetics published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles from 1990 through 2004 to understand the status of research. The data analyzed consisted of 196 out of 1538 articles in a 15-year period. The results were as follows: 1) The percentage of articles on history of costume and design and aesthetics continued to decline, and more studies on design and aesthetics was published than studies on history of costume. 2) Co-authored study by two researchers has continued to increase since 2001. 3) The studies by qualitative methods were higher overall in percentage. However, quantitative methods have increased since 1997.4) Foreign books as a reference represented the largest percentage in all periods but have declined gradually, while domestic journals and theses or dissertations continued to increase in design area. 5) The publication year of references showed the largest percentage in the ' under 10 years ' category. Especially an increasing number of references on design and aesthetics were cited within 5 years of publication.

복식은 인체를 바탕으로 하여 착용한 사람의 사상이나 감정을 대변하고 그 시대의 문화적인 현상을 잘 표현하고 있으며 헤어스타일(hairstyle) 과 헤드기어(headgear) 또한 복식의 외관적 특징을 나타내는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 지금까지 서양복식사에서 여자 헤어스타일이나 헤드드레스(headdress)에 관한 연구는 많이 보고되어 왔지만 여자 헤드드레스의 화려함과 다양함에 못지 않은 남자 헤드기어에 대한 연구는 많지 않았다. (중략)

The purpose of this study was to pave the way to improve the quality of historical clothing and textiles and to search for the advisable direction of future studies by examining and analyzing the interdisciplinary approach of historical clothing and textiles related articles published in The Korean Society of Costume. For this analysis, the data were included 124 historical clothing and textiles research articles published in The Korean Society of Costume from 1980 to 2001 March. The followings show the results of this study. 1. The five dominant interdisciplinary fields of historical clothing and textiles were Identified : anthropology, art history, pop music, archaeology, sociology 2. The interdisciplinary research has been actively approached in historical clothing and textiles. 3. The most frequently approached field of the interdisciplinary researches of historical clothing and textiles was art history 4. The period that has most variety interdisciplinary fields was the present age. The studies of future historical clothing and textiles should be approached in more diverse areas of interdisciplinary way and time periods.

복식사 연구의 의의 중 하나는 고대 복식 자료를 현대 패션 디자인에 활용하는데 있다. 현대 패션디자이너들은 전통 복식의 스타일, 소재, 색, 문양 등에서 디자인 영감을 얻고 있다. 이러한 측면에서 본 연구에서는 고대 아시아 북방 민족들에게서 시작되어 중국 본토에 보편화되었으며 청조에는 관복의 구성품목으로 제도화된 피령에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.(중략)
