  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the perception factors of a pedestrian environment that affect pedestrian environment satisfaction(PES) and determine the relationship between PES and the expected effects of health promotion. The targeted areas of study are neighborhood parks in Suseong-gu, Daegu city. First, regarding the results for the evaluation of pedestrian environment perception, 'Gentle slope' was rated the highest, while factors regarding pedestrian safety such as 'Lots of unpleasant elements', 'Risk from biking and motorcycling' and 'Many obstacles on sidewalks' were rated low. A stepwise regression analysis showed that factors such as 'Fresh air', 'Beautiful scenery', 'Continuity of the sidewalks', 'Various attractions', 'The shade of trees' and 'Lots of unpleasant elements' influenced the PES. Therefore, creating fresh air and shade trees by planting trees and removing unpleasant elements from pedestrian areas are important. Also, it is necessary to cultivate beautiful scenery and attractions through street improvement and improve the continuity of the sidewalks. Finally, in terms of path analysis, PES influenced the frequency of park use, the expected effects of physical and mental health promotion both directly and indirectly.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of whole-body vibration exercise for life care on balance and walking ability in the fall risk stroke patients. 30 stroke patients were divided into two groups, Otago exercise group(n=15) and whole-body vibration exercise group(n=15). Walking ability were measured by 10m walking and Tinetti mobility test with stroke patients and balance ability were measured by BBS and TUG on comparative analysis of pre, post exercise. To compare differences before and after the program, a paired t-test was used and to compare differences between both groups, an independent samples t-test was used. As a result of the test, it was discovered that BBS and Tinetti mobility test of the both groups were increased statistically significantly and TUG and 10m walking test of the both groups were decreased statistically significantly. balance ability and walking ability of the whole-body vibration exercise group were improved statistically significantly in comparison with those of the Otago exercise group. The results of this study showed that whole-body vibration exercise for the improvement of life care had significant effects on improving BBS, TUG, 10m walking and Tinetti mobility test of fall risk stroke patients. Therefore, it is recommended to apply whole-body vibration exercise to improve life-care through improving balance ability and walking ability of fall risk stroke patients.

  • The congestion of pedestrians impedes the utilization efficiency of a subway station. Conflicts among pedestrians due to unseparated pedestrian flows not only increase the impedance of pedestrian mobility but also negatively affect on pedestrian safety. This paper analyzes the travel characteristics of bi-directional pedestrian flow based on microscopic movements, and evaluates the operation efficiency on separating the traffic line. The subway station was simulated in a 2-D grid structure by applying Discrete Element Method, and the movement is organized in each cell of the grid. As a result, the model explicates that separating the traffic line and encouraging the 'Keep right rule' would be mostly effective for the conflicting flows. Therefore, applying the 'Walking Guidance System' would be efficient to improve the pedestrian convenience and mobility.

  • As car-oriented road policies have been made forward so far, relatively pedestrians' walking conditions are so in poor environments that more than two thousand pedestrians die from car accidents every year. Pedestrians' walking right has been severely invaded like that. Pedestrians' walking right is a right that people are able to walk safely and comfortably in pleasant surroundings as long as they don't threaten the public safety, order maintenance, and welfare. The government has an obligation to provide safe, comfortable, and pleasant environments to pedestrians. Recently interests in pedestrians' safety are increasing, government-driven supports have been made to make safe, pleasant, and healthy walking surroundings. As poor walking condition improvement projects cost high, they should be progressed to accomplish maximal effects using finite finances efficiently, and post feasibility evaluations of the projects should be severely estimated. However site selecting indicators which satisfy with the goal for composing safe working surroundings have not been decided yet, though currently it has a legal basis to specify walking condition improvement sites by the Law for Pedestrians' safety and Comfort Increasement. Therefore this study focuses on suggesting improved ways for selecting sites where pedestrians' safe environment project by reviewing previous research. When project sites are selected, evaluation indicators related to awareness survey of residents and history should be excluded, and disaster safety assessments for walking safety facilities, latent human hazards and natural disasters like a strong wind are proposed besides evaluations on pedestrians' safety and walking environment for matching with the purpose of the project to make safe working surroundings.

  • The present study investigated the effects of dynamic tubing gait (DTG II) program on the balancing ability for the promotion of life care of patients with chronic stroke. In the study, 25 sessions of DTG II program (30 minutes per session, 5 sessions per week, for a total of 5 weeks) were applied to 10 patients with chronic stroke. To determine the effects of DTG II program for improving balance, surface electromyography(external oblique, erector spinae, iliopsoas, gluteus maximus), symmetry index test on three pelvic axes, and dynamic gait index test were performed before and after the intervention. The results showed statistically significant differences between preand post-intervention measurements of the gluteus maximus muscle at early and mid-stance phases(p<.05). The pelvic symmetry index differed significantly between pre- and post-intervention measurements of diagonal and rotational movement(p<.05). Comparison of dynamic gait index also showed statistically significant differences between pre- and post-intervention measurements(p<.05). Based on these findings, it was determined that the DTG II program was able to improve the balancing ability of patients with chronic stroke by activating their trunk muscles and improving the symmetry of diagonal pelvic movement and rotation. Therefore, DTG II program is recommended as an interventional method to improve life-care through improving the balancing ability of patients with chronic stroke.

  • This paper analyzed an existing literature review of street environment, density, accessibility, and diversity in terms of not the street level, but also the urban context level. In addition, this paper examined Jane Jacobs' theory (1961) regarding the relevance between the diversity of facilities and increasing volume of pedestrians. To find the explanation ability and significance among variables, this paper employed Enter's method of Regression Analysis in the industrial classification of restaurant business and liquor business. This empirical analysis of both theories of Jacobs (1961) and MacCormac (1983) had a different signification from existing research. Jacobs (1961) suggested the relevance among various facilities for increasing the volume of pedestrians, and MacCormac (1983) explained the different impact by industrial classification. In future research, the subdividing of industrial classification is necessary for a more precise and specific analysis.

  • This study intended to provide the inherent characteristics of weak pedestrian including walking speed and perception-reaction time and to propose pedestrian signal timing models considering those characteristics. To collect the relevant data, field studies were conducted in virtual crosswalk environments. Walking speed were found to be 0.63 m/s and 0.57 m/s for children and the elderly, respectively. However, the elderly had higher perception-reaction time than children. By considering these characteristics, two pedestrian signal timing models were developed. Sensitivity analysis results showed that the models can produce reasonable ranges of pedestrian signal time. The data in this paper can be used for future references, and the mobility of weak pedestrian may be improved by applying the models suggested in this paper.
