  • The currently used wax agents for preserving outdoor metal structures, despite their advantages, have disadvantages such as low endurance and reliability. These wax agents are easily damaged by acid rain, dust, moisture in the air, yellow dust, and air pollutants, resulting in corrosion within a short period after the initial conservation treatment. In addition, aged wax can also exhibit changes in the color or gloss, and also give a sense of difference in the surface. Given these existing problems, it is necessary to develop improved materials for metal preservation. Therefore, this study analyzed the characteristics and applications of the existing wax coating agents in order to identify their disadvantages and to develop a better material for metal preservation. In this regard, this study developed a perilla oil based compound wax and conducted experiments to test its endurance. The new compound wax agent was exposed to outdoor and acid rain conditions: it showed four times and 1.5 times the endurance of the existing wax agents in outdoor and acid rain conditions, respectively. In addition, the new agent seems to be more durable and protective as evidenced by the chromaticity, polish maintenance, and contact angle results. Further, although it is 1.3-1.8 times thicker than the existing agents, the new agent shows a more even surface. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the new compound wax agent based on perilla oil is a better alternative to the existing was coating agents.

  • The purpose of metal artifacts conservation is recovering the original state of objects and preventing it from further corrosion. Four different consolidants are selected that are widely used for bronze objects conservation. This study found out the characteristics of thin film by various experiments and analysis for the bronze plates coated using each solutions. After a series of analysis, resin B and V showed good coating properties. However, the evaluation point suited to this purpose are adhesive strength, stability against yellowing and corrosion resistance. Therefore, resin B of four different consolidants could expect to get the most suitable consolidation effect for consolidation purpose.

  • Waxes currently used as a coating material to preserve surfaces of outdoor iron sculptures tend to face lower coating strength and efflorescence due to the aging from air pollution and acid rains. Consequently, they are subjected to repeated corrosions shortly after the treatment. And the sculptures face the problem losing their original nature because of the changes of colors and lusters, so this convergence study aims at developing wax with better performance than the existing materials. For this reason, the study identified the effects of physical property using the environmental experiments such as the tests of salt spray and gas corrosion as well as the analysis of luster level and thermo-gravimetry. As this study result, the developed ISC wax showed the excellent blocking effect from salt water and coating durability more than five times compared with the existing waxes, better acid resistance by two-four times, sun block effect by 2-10 times, improved luster variance by 3-16 times, improved thermo-stability and durability by 0.5-5 times, and therefore demonstrating far better coating effect than the existing waxes. In the light of these findings, this study contributes for this new development which can replace the existing waxes used so far in order to preserve the outdoor iron sculptures.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the solubility and the amount of fluoride release when a resin surface coating agent is applied to RMGIC. Materials and Methods: To measure the fluoride release and solubility, Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$and $Filtek^{TM}$ Z350XT without a surface coating, Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ with G coat $plus^{TM}$ and Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$ with $Permaseal^{(R)}$ were prepared. And the amount of fluoride release and solubility were measured. Results: There was no significant difference in the daily fluoride release between the surface coating agents. The cumulative fluoride release was significantly different between the groups using RMGIC at 56 days (P < 0.05). In the solubility measurement, RMGIC without surface coating was significantly different only on the 7th day compared to the other three groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Surface coating agents can prevent the degradation of properties by the initial solvent in RMGIC. Therefore, fluoride is preserved inside the restorative material and the effect of surface coating after the addition is reduced, so that the effect on fluoride release and storage is also reduced.

  • We examined characterizations of Paraloid B72 films when it dissolved in four different solvents-acetone, MEK, toluene and xylene. The surface before and after coating were observed by optical microscope and AFM. Thickness and contact angle of films was measured and surface energy was calculated for grasping properties of films. We also tested adhesive strength of films by scratch tester and durability of films by performing yellowing test. The result was that xylene has better coating property than other solvents. Because 10% Paraloid B72 in xylene film is even, non-mottled, thin, stabilized in yellowish and has proper hydrophobic, we confirmed xylene is good solvent for bronze artifact conservation. However, other tests will need for finding appropriate concentration of Paraloid B72.

  • Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PVP) and its copolymers, poly(4-vinyl pvridine- co-acrylamide) and poly(4-vinyl pyridine-co-allylamine), were synthesized and evaluated for application to organic solder-ability preservatives (OSP). The copolymers were synthesized by radical polymerization of vinyl pyridine in the presence of acrylamide or allylamine as a comonomer. Various kinds of polymers with different chemical composition were synthesized by varying the feed ratio of monomers and their low $M_w$ polymers can be obtained by adding 2-mercaptoethanol as a chain transfer agent during poly-merization. All the polymers showed good adhesion properties on Cu pad when they were spin-coated. Especially, allylamine -containing copolymers showed both good adhesion and solubility properties. Also, they exhibited better thermal stability than PVP homopolymer and such thermal properties were changed depending on the chemical composition and their $M_w$, which were evidenced by the measurement of oxygen induced temperature (OIT). From the OIT measurement, poly(4-vinyl pyridine- co-allylamine) was thermally stable up to $230^{\circ}C$ for 70 min in the 100% oxygen environment. As a result, allylamine-containing copolymers can be considered as a promising OSP coating material that has excellent thermal and adhesive properties applicable to the present microelectronic package processes.

  • The effects of modified atmosphere(MA) packaging and coating on the quality of mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) were investigated. Whole mushrooms(100 g) were packed with polyvinyl chloride(PVC) film wrap, PD941 and PD961 film bags and were stored in a chamber at $12^{\circ}C$ and 80% RH for 6 days. Gas composition of packages, respiration rate, weight loss, color and maturity index of MA packaged mushrooms were examined. The wrap packaged mushrooms showed different level of internal $CO_2$ concentrations among water washed, chitosan coated and $CaCl_2$ coated subgroups significantly at 5% level. The maximum $CO_2$ concentration of PD941 and PD961 packages for all coated showed $4.1{\sim}4.7%$ and $10.4{\sim}11.7%$, respectively, for the first day. PD961 package showed the lowest $O_2$ concentration compared to other groups. There were no significant respiration rate differences between wrap packed and PD941 packaged. Respiration rate of water washed. chitosan coated and $CaCl_2$ coated in PD961 packaged was 192 mg, 226 mg and 245 mg, respectively. Maturity index of PD961 packaged were not significantly different among the water washed, chitosan and $CaCl_2$ coated packages. Chitosan coating showed a negative effect on color change of mushrooms. The weight loss of 961 packaged was lower $(7.0{\sim}8.0%)$ that those of wrap packaged and PD941 packaged.

  • This clinical study evaluated the whitening effect and safety of polymer based-pen type BlancTis Forte (NIBEC) containing 8.3% carbamide peroxide. Twenty volunteers used the BlancTis Forte whitening agent for 2 hours twice a day for 4 weeks. As a control. Whitening Effect Pen (LG) containing 3% hydrogen peroxide was used by 20 volunteers using the same protocol. The change in shade (${\Delta}E^*$, color difference) was measured using $Shadepilot^{TM}$ (DeguDent) before, during, and after bleaching (2 weeks, 4 weeks, and post-bleaching 4 weeks). A clinical examination for any side effects (tooth hypersensitivity or soft tissue complications) was also performed at each check-up. The following results were obtained. 1. Both the experimental and control groups displayed a noticeable change in shade (${\Delta}E$) of over 2. No significant differences were found between the two groups (p > 0.05), implying that the two agents have a similar whitening effect.2. The whitening effect was mainly due to changes in a and b values rather than in L value (brightness). The experimental group showed a significantly higher change in b value, thus yellow shade, than the control (p < 0.05). 3. None of the participants complained of tooth hypersensitivity or soft tissue complications, confirming the safety of both whitening agents.
