Recent R&D Trends of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Power Generation System (고체산화물 연료전지 발전시스템의 최근 연구 개발 동향)

  • This article reviews recent R&D trends in SOFC development with an emphasis on industries that can produce the SOFC stack and power generation system. SOFC is an electrochemical device that can convert the chemical energy of fuel into the electrical energy with environment friendly system and high efficiency. SOFC power generation system could be classified as the portable power generation system, auxiliary power unit(APU), residential power generation(RPG) and large size distributed power generation. In the case of more than 10kW system, the major R&D trends are focused on the tubular type SOFC system with high efficient and long term stability to meet the commercialization of SOFC power generation system.

  • Solar and wind energy among the renewable energy produce irregular power because resource is difficult to control. When connected to grid have unstable. However, when the fuel cell system is connected to grid more stable because regular frequency and output power based on controllable hydrogen energy. To using fuel cell system in the household, it is important that the safety performance of power conditioning system(PCS) and it is important that evaluation method of electromagnetic compatibility(EMC). In this study, we consider that introduce power-frequency magnetic field immunity test before analyzed that compare with the EMC of the international standards and KGS AB 934 PC53. Also, we conduct that actual assessment and study on available the quantitative analysis as using complementary indicator.

A study on the utilization of abrasive waterjet for mechanical excavation of hard rock in vertical shaft construction (고강도 암반에서 수직구 기계굴착을 위한 연마재 워터젯 활용에 관한 연구)

  • In cable tunnel construction using TBM, the vertical shaft is an essential structure for entrance and exit of TBM equipment and power lines. Since a shaft penetrates the ground vertically, it often encounters rock mass. Blasting or rock splitting methods, which are mainly used to the rock excavation, cause public complaints due to the noise, vibration and road occupation. Therefore, mechanical excavation using vertical shaft excavation machine are considered as an alternative to the conventional methods. However, at the current level of technology, the vertical excavation machine has limitation in its performance when applied for high strength rock with a compressive strength of more than 120 MPa. In this study, the potential utilization of waterjet technology as an excavation assistance method was investigated to improve mechanical excavation performance in the hard rock formations. Rock cutting experiments were conducted to verify the cutting performance of the abrasive waterjet. Based on the experimental result, it was found that ensuring excavation performance with respect to changing in ground conditions can be achieved by adjusting waterjet parameters such as standoff distance, traverse speed and water pressure. In addition, based on the relationship between excavation performance, uniaxial compressive strength and RQD, it was suggested that excavation performance could be improved by artificially creating joints using the abrasive waterjet. It is expected that these research results can be utilized as fundamental data for the introduction of vertical shaft excavation machines in the future.

  • Photovoltaic energy and wind energy are very in constant depending on the season, time and extremely intermittent energy sources. Because of these reasons, in view of the reliability the solar and the wind generation system have many problems(energy conversion, energy storage, load control etc.) comparing with a conventional power plant. So, in order to solve these existing problems, hybrid generation system of photovoltaic(500W) and wind power(400W), which combines wind power energy and solar energy to have effect of supporting each other, was suggested. But hybrid generation system cannot always generate stable output with weather condition, the auxiliary power compensation apparatus that uses elastic energy of spiral spring to hybrid generation system was also added for the present study. And it may confirm that power was continuously provided to load by storing energy obtained from generating rotary energy of spiral spring generates in small scale generator.

Energy-efficient Correlated Data Placement Techniques for Multi-disk-based Mobile Systems (다중 디스크 기반 모바일 시스템 대상의 에너지 효율적인 연관 데이타 배치 기법)

  • Hard disks have been the most prevalent secondary storage devices and these days their usage is becoming more important in mobile computing systems due to I/O intensive applications such as multimedia applications and games. However, significant power consumption in the disk drives still limits battery lifetimes of mobile systems critically. In this paper, we show that using several smaller disks (instead of one large disk) can be an energy-efficient secondary storage solution on typical mobile platforms without a significant performance delay. Also, we propose a novel energy-efficient technique, which clusters related data into groups and migrates the correlated groups to the same disk. We compare this method with the existing data concentration scheme, and also combine them. The experiments show that our technique saves the energy consumption up to 34% when a pair of 1.8' disks is used instead of a single 2.5' disk with a negligible increase in the average response time. The results also show that our method also saves up to 14.8% of disk energy consumption and improve the average I/O response time by up to 10 times over the existing scheme.

Technical Trends for Fuel Cell Aircraft (연료전지항공기 기술 동향)

  • Fuel cells are applied to the propulsion system of aircraft based on environmental-friendly characteristics with low noise and zero emission of CO2, currently many kinds of UAV and small manned aircraft equipped with fuel cells are being developed. Fuel cells for aircraft typically classified into PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) type and SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) type and the system is developed to adapt missions and operational conditions of aircraft. For UAV, various types of aircraft mostly based on PEM fuel cell technology are investigated for military or commercial uses, and the stability and endurance of system will be improved. For small manned aircraft, many researches are carried out to substitute the propulsion system by fuel cell, also some developments for the higher performance of APU of large commercial aircraft to apply fuel cells are in progress. In the future, a fuel cell aircraft will be expected to improve the reliability and efficiency with higher power density.

An Integrated Management System of the Educational Equipments and Contents of Secondary School (중등학교의 교육 기자재 및 콘텐츠 통합 관리 시스템)

  • These days due to the introduction of the subject classroom system, the classrooms for the subject are arranged and various advanced educational equipment is provided in the classroom such as the actual object image processor, electronic blackboard, and educational photographer which are helpful to the class. With the increase of these equipments, the number of remote controller of individual educational equipment also increases, therefore it is complicate to manage the remote controllers and teachers need to learn the usage of them. So the system supports a remote control for managing the educational equipment by the one remote controller and the instructional supplement. The system consists of the hardware which is similar to popular remote controller and the software which is installed on the teacher's PC and supports controlling the educational equipments, recording the instruction, writing on the blackboard, and automatic power off of the equipment. By introducing the system the teacher could reduce the time consumed by the equipment's control and useless electric waste.

  • A TPMS is a wireless communication system designed to monitor its condition inside the pneumatic tires on various types of vehicles. These systems report the tire pressure information to the driver of the vehicle. While wireless communications is used to transmit the measurement data from TPMS sensors to a central processing unit in the vehicle, it suffers from the various interferences such as sensors of each tire or outside electrical equipments. Based on the conventional beamformer, a switching beamforming technique is proposed to minimize the interference and efficiently receive valid data. Moreover, in order to minimize the interference and reduce power consumption for communication, a system with unique Gold Code is presented for each tire. The performance of interference suppression is illustrated by computer simulations.

Ocean Fog Detection Alarm System for Safe Ship Navigation (선박 안전항해를 위한 해무감지 경보 시스템)

  • Recently, amid active research on domestic shipbuilding industry and IT convergence technology, with the development of satellite detection technology for ship safety operation, ships monitored the movement of ships with the mandatory long-range identification & tracking of vessels and automatic identification system. It is possible to help safe navigation, but it is necessary to develop safety device that alert the marine officer who rely on radar to correct conditions in case of weightlessness. Therefore, an ocean fog alarm system was developed to detect and inform using photo sensors. The fabricated ocean fog detect and alarm system consists of a small, low-power optical sensor transceiver and data sensing processing module. Through experiment, it is confirmed that the fabricated ocean fog detect and alarm system measure the corresponding concentration of ocean fog for fogless circumstance and fogbound circumstance, respectively. Furthermore, the fabricated system can control RPM of ship engine according to the concentration of ocean fog, and consequently, the fabricated system can be applied to assistant device for ship safety operation.

  • The array weights that will maximize the SNR for any type of noise environment are determined by the function of the antenna design configuration and the directions of receiving target and interference signals. The conventional SLCs(sidelobe cancellers) using the SNR maximization perform worst from the saturation of the receiving system of main channel when the main antenna has pattern with high gain at the arrival angle of strong interference. In this paper, the new SLC is accomplished by using two independent antenna architecture. Main antenna is implemented with adaptive nulling, which is used for rejecting high-power interference primarily. Auxiliary antenna is realized with adaptive array for receiving interference signal to be suppressed completely, which has a characteristics of sufficient gain for every direction. The new SLC is implemented with above both antennas. We show that the new SLC, which consists of the adaptive nulling main antenna and the adaptive array auxiliary antenna, is useful in reducing the effect of strong interference like jammer, because the adaptive nulling at main antenna prevents its receiver and signal processor for saturation by strong interference. The proposed SLC has improved SNR over the conventional SLCs. The improved SNR at sidelobe region is typically more than 7 dB for a given test signal. Moreover, it improves the SNR of about 20 dB under strong interference at mainlobe.
