  • Purpose: Predicting life expectancy of terminally ill cancer patients is very important. In many studies, ferritin is detected at higher levels in the sera of cancer patients, and higher ferritin level correlates with aggressiveness of disease and poor outcomes of patients. This study evaluated a prognostic role of serum ferritin levels in terminally ill cancer patients. Methods: This study enrolled 65 terminally ill cancer patients from March through June 2012. We assessed routine laboratory findings including serum ferritin levels as well as demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients. To examine the association between serum ferritin levels and patient's characteristics, we used Spearman's correlation analysis, Wilcoxon's rank sum test or Kruskal-Wallis test, as appropriately. For multivariate analysis, Cox's proportional hazard regression model was used to evaluate significance of serum ferritin levels as a prognostic factor. Results: A negative correlation between serum ferritin levels and survival time was found. After adjusting for sex, age, performance status, creatinine levels and white blood cell counts, serum ferritin levels were significantly associated with survival time. Conclusion: Even at the very end of life of terminal cancer patients, serum ferritin levels were an independent prognostic factor for survival.

  • This study carried out a topographic survey at a small-scale open-pit limestone mine in Korea (the Daesung MDI Seoggyo office) using a popular rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, Drone, DJI Phantom2 Vision+). 89 sheets of aerial photos could be obtained as a result of performing an automatic flight for 30 minutes under conditions of 100m altitude and 3m/s speed. A total of 34 million cloud points with X, Y, Z-coordinates was extracted from the aerial photos after data processing for correction and matching, then an orthomosaic image and digital surface model with 5m grid spacing could be generated. A comparison of the X, Y, Z-coordinates of 5 ground control points measured by differential global positioning system and those determined by UAV photogrammetry revealed that the root mean squared errors of X, Y, Z-coordinates were around 10cm. Therefore, it is expected that the popular rotary-wing UAV photogrammetry can be effectively utilized in small-scale open-pit mines as a technology that is able to replace or supplement existing topographic surveying equipments.

  • Objectives : To evaluate the association of snoring and hyper-tension in a rural population. Methods : A population-based sample of 1,763 adults in Chonnam, Korea was investigated with questionnaires and height, weight, and blood pressure measurements. Information on the demographic characteristics, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension and snoring was collected through a person-to-person interview using a structured questionnaire. The level of obesity was measured by the body mass index(BMI). Hypertension was considered to be present if the average of two blood pressure measurements was greater than 140mmHg systolic or 90mmHg diastolic, or if they were currently on antihypertensive treatment. Results : The prevalence of snoring was 42.7% in men and 39.8% in women. With regard to age, snoring prevalence was 44.3% in the middle-aged group(45 to 64 years), greater than 33.9% in the younger(<45 years) group or 38.7% in the elderly($\geq65$ years) group. The snoring prevalence increased progressively with increasing BMI, but cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption was not associated with snoring. Hypertension occurred more frequently in snorers than in non-snorers (Odds ratio: 1.25, 95% confidence interval : 1.01-1.55). However after adjusting for sex, age, obesity, smoking, and alcohol use, an effect of snoring on hypertension was no longer present (Odds ratio: 1.13, 95% confidence interval = 0.90-1.41). Conclusion : These results suggest that snoring might not be associated with hypertension.

  • Vegetation phenology is the most important indicator of ecosystem response to climate change. Therefore it is necessary to continuously monitor forest phenology. This paper analyzes the phenological characteristics of forests in South Korea using the MODIS vegetation index with error from clouds or other sources removed using the HANTS algorithm. After using the HANTS algorithm to reduce the noise of the satellite-based vegetation index data, we were able to confirm that phenological transition dates varied strongly with altitudinal gradients. The dates of the start of the growing season, end of the growing season and the length of the growing season were estimated to vary by +0.71day/100m, -1.33day/100m and -2.04day/100m in needleleaf forests, +1.50day/100m, -1.54day/100m and -3.04day/100m in broadleaf forests, +1.39day/100m, -2.04day/100m and -3.43day/100m in mixed forests. We found a linear pattern of variation in response to altitudinal gradients that was related to air temperature. We also found that broadleaf forests are more sensitive to temperature changes compared to needleleaf forests.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new DGS(Defected Ground Structure) Doherty amplifier for IMT-2000 band. Originally, active load-pull analysis of a Doherty amplifier assumes ideal harmonic termination condition. However, there have been no papers considering this ideal harmonic termination condition. We obtained excellent improvements of efficiency, gain, maximum output power as well as superior size reduction of a Doherly amplifier by satisfying the overlooked assumption of ideal harmonic termination through the adaptation of DGS at the output transmission line of carrier and peaking amplifier that is essential for Doherty operation. The amount of both the 2nd and the 3rd harmonic rejection of the proposed DGS Doherty amplifier over the conventional one are 44.92 dB and over 23.77 dB, respectively. The acquired improvement in Pl dB, gain, drain efficiency, and ACPR to WCDMA 1FA signal were 0.42 dB, 0.33 dB, $6.4\%$ and 5.4 dBc, respectively. Moreover, electrical length of $90{\circ}$ is reduced at each of the DGS carrier amplifier path and DGS peaking amplifier path, therefore the whole amplifier circuit size is considerably reduced.

  • Probabilistic design is required to effectively consider the coastal environment of great uncertainty. However, designers who are familiar with the deterministic design method prefer a method which is similar to the existing method but is based on the probabilistic concept. Therefore, the partial safety factor method has been adopted as a new design method over the world. In Korea, Tetrapod is widely used for armoring rubble mound breakwaters. Even though the partial safety factor method developed in the United States and Europe covers Tetrapods, the limited wave and structure conditions in its development make the engineers hesitate about its use in practical breakwater design. In this study, partial safety factors for Tetrapod armor blocks have been developed by analyzing 116 breakwater cross-sections and wave conditions in 16 trade harbors and 15 coastal harbors with the FORM and optimal code calibration approach. Especially, partial safety factors have been proposed depending on the shape parameter of the Weibull extreme wave height distribution. For other types of extreme distributions, it is possible to apply the proposed partial safety factors using the relationship between skewness coefficient and shape parameter. Finally, the proposed partial safety factors have been applied to existing structures to show that they better satisfy the target reliability of the structures than previous partial safety factors.

  • Final goal of this research is to establish the database for correlation factors which connects the test and analysis results of shear buckling allowables for composite plate. To accomplish the goal, extensive test and analysis works are required. In this paper, as the first step, a frame-type fixture for shear buckling test was designed and validated through the test and analysis. Final configuration of the fixture were determined via parametric study on the effect of specimen size, cross-sectional dimensions, and number of fastening bolts on the shear buckling load. Results of the study showed the designed frame-type fixture successfully induces the shear buckling of composite plate. However, there were deviations between the test results and analysis results for ideal case under pure shear load, which were mainly caused by the difference in plate sizes for both cases. The difference were larger in the plates with larger hole and simply supported boundary condition. It is concluded from the results that while the designed fixture can be used for the clamped plates with acceptable accuracy, it shows larger difference in the simply supported plates.

  • This paper describes the specifications on balanced steel ratio and maximum reinforcement for the design of RC flexural members by the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code based on limit states design. The Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit States Design) is not provide for the balanced steel ratio specification for the calculation of required steel area of RC flexural members design. The maximum steel area limited the depth of the neutral axis at the ultimate limit states after redistribution of the moment, and also recommended the maximum steel area should not exceed 4 percent of the cross sectional area. However, from the maximum neutral axis depth provisions should increase the cross section is calculated to be less the maximum reinforcement area, and according to the 4% of the cross sectional area of the concrete, the tensile strain of the reinforcement is calculated to be greater than double the yielding strain, so can not guarantee a ductile behavior. This study developed a balanced reinforcement ratio that is basis for the required reinforcement calculation for tension-controlled RC flexural members design in the ultimate limit states verification provisons and material properties and applied the ultimate strain of the concrete compressive strength with a simple formular to be applied to design practice induced. And assumed the minimum allowable tensile strain of reinforcement double the yielding strain, and applying correction coefficient up to the ratio of maximum neutral axis depth, proposed maximum steel ratio that can be applied irrespective of the reinforcement yield strength and concrete compressive strength.

  • A Siemens SemiQuant (SSQ) 3000 program, a precalibrated 'standardless' analytical program handling up to 90 elements, was evaluated for the fast analysis of various types of reference materials using a wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Various types of standard reference materials such as metal discs, metal chips, and geological materials in powder form were analysed and it took 23 minutes of measuring time for 75 elements. Measurements of geological reference materials using different sampling methods were carried out and their data were interactively evaluated. The analysis of materials of a known matrix concentration such as stainless steels provided higher precision value compared to totally unknown samples. The analyses of materials prepared as pressed pellets or fused glass beads provided higher precision values compared to the measurement of loose powders with a foil on the sample surface and helium operation, though their sampling procedures were more complicate and took more time. Since very light elements such as boron, carbon, and oxygen have a strong influence on the matrix effects and also on the calculation of effective matrix corrections, the rhodium Compton check was applied to verify the reliability of the defined light element concentrations of light matrix materials and the defined major sample compounds. Failure of defining correct matrix resulted in an unoptimized matrix correction and therefore in the wrong calculation of the element concentration.
