  • Two-phase loop systems using the latent heat capacity of their working fluids can meet the increasing power requirements and are well suited to thermal management systems of future large applications, due to its abilities to handle large heat loads and to provide them at uniform temperatures regardless of the changes in the heat loads. Therefore some experiments on the effect of the gas and liquid superficial velocities, $j_G,\;j_L$ on flow pattern transition, void fraction and frictional pressure loss were performed on a co-current air-water flow in an adiabatic horizontal tube. The flow patterns were depended on the superficial velocity of each phase. It snowed that the increasing $j_L$, resulted in a significant increase in the frictional pressure loss for all flow patterns, at a constant $j_G$. The experimental results were also evaluated with some of existing models and correlations.

  • This study was to predict subcooled void fraction in water under low velocity ($0.03{\sim}0.5m/s$) and low pressure. ($1.53Kg/cm^2$ a) The experiments were done to determine void fraction in a uniformly heated annular test section. Some models from the literature were compared to the experimental results, but none gave consistently good predictions. A method using an empirical factor was developed to predict the void fraction. This model was applied to the test results and found to be good for some ranges of flow velocities.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate characteristics of the flow patterns, its transitions and the mean local void fraction obtained from which the probe was traversed diametrically from center to wall of the test section in the vertical upward air-water flow for isothermal condition using the electrical conductivity probe. It has been shown that the probability density function of the mean local void fraction measured statistically from a Fast Fourier Transform becomes a criterion for the flow patterns and the mean local void fraction profile is a highly function of the flow patterns.

  • This paper deals with the flow characteristics of air-water two-phase flow in a vertical tube of 10mm I.D. and 600mm in length at an adiabatic condition. The obtained experimental data were covered with the liquid superficial velocity ranging from 0.095m/s to 2.56m/s. and the gas superficial velocity ranging from 0.032m/s to 21.08m/s. The effects of the gas and liquid superficial velocity on the flow pattern transitions, frictional pressure drop, and film thickness and gas-liquid interface roughness were also examined. It was found that the film thickness increased and the liquid film wave length was more longer with the liquid superficial velocity $j_L$ increasing at $j_G$ constant. It was also showed that the frictional pressure drops were experienced in three regions. namely increasing region(bubbly flow), decreasing region (Taylor bubble and slug flows) and re-increasing region (annular flow).

  • As an effective means to convey crushed materials from seabed to on board ship and to raise hazardous or abrasive liquids air-lift pump provides a reliable mechanism due to its simple config-uration and easy-to-operate principle. The present study is focused on fundamental investigation of related performance by the analysis program based on the gas-liquid two-phase flow in circular pipes. The program covers pump operating in isothermal and vertical two-phase flow with Newto-nian liquids. it is summarized as important result that an optimum air mass flow rate exists for the maximum lifted liquid mass flow rate in terms of a given submergence rates and furthermore attachment of downcomer gives little effects on riser performance the conveyed liquid flow rate increases with larger submergence rate.

  • This paper presents experimental data of fluctuation characteristics of local void fraction of air-water two-phase flow which are associated with the flow pattern, annular gap size and radial location in vertical concentric annuli with coefficient of skewness and kurtosis. The annular gap widths are 13mm, 11mm, and 9mm for a 38m inner diameter as the lucite outer tube. A electrical conductivity probe was used to measure the local void fraction and traversed diametrically from inner wall to outer wall using radial increments of 2mm. It was shown that distribution of the coefficient of skewness and kurtosis, which is related that the one is the asymmetry and the other peakness of local void fraction distribution was influenced by flow pattern, annular gap size and radial location.

  • It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer material, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter, and flow velocity. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research of drag reduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction whether polymer is added in the horizontal two phase system or not. Experiment has been conducted in a test section with 24 m of the inner diameter and 1,500 mm of the length. The used polymer materials are two kinds of polyacrylamide[PAAM] and co-polymer[A611P]. The polymer concentration was varied with 50, 100 and 200 ppm under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results were shown that the drag is higher reduced by co-polymer rather than polyanylamide.
