돈보스코는 이탈리아 출신의 로마 가톨릭 신부였다. 살레시오 수도회를 창설하고 평생을 어린이와 청소년 교육에 헌신하였다. 1929년 교황 비오 11세가 복자로 시복하였고, 1934년 4월 1일에 비오 11세에 의해 성인으로 선포되었다. 청소년들을 위해서 헌신한 그의 생애는 이탈리아 영화<돈 보스코>로 만들어지기도 할 정도로 많은 사람들의 존경을 받고 있다.

The inhibitory effects of Boswellia serrata (BW) extracts on degenerative osteoarthritis were investigated in primary-cultured rat cartilage cells and a monosodium-iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis rat model. To identify the protective effects of BW extract against $H_2O_2$ ($800{\mu}M$, 2 hr) in vitro, cell survival was measured by MTT assay. Cell survival after $H_2O_2$ treatment was elevated by BW extract at a concentration of $20{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, BW extract treatment significantly reduced and normalized the productions of pro-inflammatory factors, nuclear transcription factor ${\kappa}B$, cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, and interleukin-6 at a concentration of $20{\mu}g/mL$. Treatment of chondrocytes with BW extract significantly reduced 5-lipoxygenase activity and production of prostaglandin E2, especially at a concentration of $10{\sim}20{\mu}g/mL$. For the in vivo animal study, osteoarthritis was induced by intra-articular injection of MIA into knee joints of rats. Consumption of a diet containing BW extract (100 and 200 mg/kg) for 35 days significantly inhibited the development and severity of osteoarthritis in rats. To determine the genetic expression of arthritic factors in articular cartilage, real-time PCR was applied to measure matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-3, MMP-9, and MMP-13), collagen type I, collagen type II, and aggrecan, and BW extract had protective effects at a concentration of 200 mg/kg. In conclusion, BW extract was able to inhibit articular cartilage degeneration by preventing extracellular matrix degradation and chondrocyte injury. One can consider that BW extract may be a potential therapeutic treatment for degenerative osteoarthritis.

필자는 콜로라도 주립대학 약학 생물 공학 센터에서 박사 과정을 마친 후, 메사추세츠 공과대학 (MIT)의 Biological engineering division에서 2004년 2월까지 약 1년 4개월 간의 박사 후 연구를 수행하였다. 본 글에서는 이 짧은 기간동안에 보고 느낀 바를 기술하고자 한다. 보스톤은 미국 건국 200년의 역사를 간직해 온 미국 동부 뉴잉글랜드 지역의 학문과 문화 중심지이다. 보스톤 시내의 복잡한 일방통로 도로를 매우 복잡한 세포내 신호전달 과정에 비유하는 것이 과언이 아닐 정도로 보스톤은 고전적인 유럽풍의 오래된 건물들이 대로를 따라 펼쳐져 있고, 낡은 전철이 지하로 지상으로 천천히 다니지만, 현대적인 고층빌딩들과 새로운 상징이 되어 버린 자킴 케이블 다리가 아름다운 야경을 연출하는, 전통과 현재가 조화롭게 펼쳐진 활기찬 도시이다. 보스톤의 한복판을 가로지르는 찰스 강변을 따라 펼쳐진 하버드와 MIT을 포함해 다수의 세계적인 명문대학들이 보스톤 시내 및 근교에 위치하고 있다.(중략)

최근 이스탄불의 골든혼 해협에서 보스포러스 해협으로 이어지는 신시가지의 부동산 시장이 초강세를 보이고 있다. 2005년 10월에 시작된 유럽연합 가입 협상을 계기로 터기의 부동산 시장이 본격적인 상승 탄력을 받으며 세계의 주목을 받기 시작한 것. 보스포러스 해협 주변에는 고급주택 및 신축 붐이 일고 있고 고층 아파트 위주로 가격이 상승하고 있는 이스탄불의 주택 시장을 직접 취재했다.

한인 13가구가 최초로 러시아로 이주한 1863년 이후 그 수는 기하급수적으로 증가하였다. 초기에는 국경지대를 중심으로 한인촌을 형성하였으나 점차 연해주는 물론 동시베리아 지역으로까지 확산되었다. 블라디보스토크에서도 도시의 건설 및 성장과 함께 한인 집단 거주지가 형성되었고, 두 차례 에 걸친 강제 이주와 한 번의 자발적 이주로 위치가 이동하였다. (중략)

This paper described the structural design and the fabrication procedure of KSR-III composite pressure tank. The type of the composite pressure tank was COPV(Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel). A non-load sharing liner was made of aluminum 6061-0 and the liner provided a helium gas seal. The composite pressure tank was winded using T700 carbon/epoxy on the liner. Because the aluminum liner was thin, multiple cure cycles were applied to the filament winding technique. The multiple cure cycles prevented the liner-cylinder from losing a circular shape. A fitting force at the metallic boss was spread to the carbon fiber by a boss ring. The boss ring also prevented a local deformation at the boss part.

This paper proposes a shape optimization of the metal boss for a composite motor case using finite element analysis. For the structural safety and the weight reduction of the composite motor case, under the internal pressure, the fiber stress in the dome area and the tightening bolt stress are constrained and the boss weight is set to objective function, respectively. The response surface models are constructed for the performance characteristics by using response surface method. The significance of the design variables about the performance characteristics is evaluated through the ANOVA(analysis of variance) and the goodness of fit test for the constructed model is performed through the regression analysis. The SQP(sequential quadratic programming) algorithm is used for the optimization and the proposed method is verified by performing structural analysis for the optimum shape.
