  • This study was accomplished to select breeding materials among the pear germplasm 6 species 43 accessions and check out the expression of scab incidence of inter specific hybrids of 5 crosses 609 seedlings for scab resistance breeding. Fruitlets scab incidence of P. pyrifolia, P. bretschneideri and P. ussuriensis were 59.5, 73.4 and 63.0% respectively, and also fruitlets scab incidence of interspecific hybrid cultivars between P. pyrifolia and P. bretschneideri were 77.7%. However, fruitlets scab incidence of P. communis and interspecific hybrid accessions between P. pyrifolia and P. communis were significantly less than 15%. As a result of the Duncan test, scab resistance of pear accessions were classified into two groups: P. communis and their hybrid were resistance and P. bretschneideri, P. pyrifolia, P. ussuriensis, and among their hybrid were susceptible. Also, it showed the same trend in the seedlings. Scab incidence of 'Seolwon' ${\times}$ 'Chuwhangbae' and 'Supergold' ${\times}$ 'Mantienhong' in P. pyrifolia seedlings showed more than 80%, while that of interspecific hybrid between P. pyrifolia and P. communis showed about 2%. It showed scab resistance of P. communis transferred to hybrid seedlings and expressed to be dominant in their seedlings. Namely, P. communis was good breeding materials for scab resistance.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the association of race distribution of Pyricularia oryzae with rice cultivar and location. Races present in a given location were different in cultivars, and the races from a given cultivars were different by location. For precise study of race distribution, it needs to identify isolates by considering cultivation ratio and collection area. There are great differences between the resistant degree in the upland blast nursery and on the resistant degree of the leaf blast and panical blast in the paddy field. The number of virulent races in a rice cultivar was not related with the resistant degree in blast nursery or in paddy field.

  • Microbial antagonism between virulent and avirulent isolates of Pseudomonas solanacearum was studied in relation to the control of bacterial wilt of tobacco. In nutrient broth media or in soil, the avirulent isolate of P. solanacearum grew faster than did the virulent one. Inhibitory effect of avirulent isolate against growth of virulent one was negligible in mixed culture of the two isolates. The disease severity of bacterial wilt was significantly reduced when the roots of cultivar BY 4 susceptible to bacterial wilt was dipped in suspension of an avirulent isolate for 6 hours prior to transplanting to the soil infested with virulent bacteria. When the seedlings of tobacco were poured with the suspension of an avirulent isolate onto the soil in pre-planting pots 24 hours before ransplanting, there was a significant reduction in disease severity in the field. However, the reduction was noticed until early July, but after middle of July, no difference between the avirulent isolate-treated and non-treated plants was found in severity of the bacterial wilt.

  • In order to effectively communicate the fragrances of commercial perfumes to consumers, it is important to apply congruent colors to their bottles and packaging. This research investigated the cross-modal associations between colors and fragrances through two experiments. In the first experiment, bottle colors of more than 200 popular perfumes in the market were analyzed. Distinguishable color design patterns of the bottles were revealed in accordance with their fragrance types. The second experiment expanded the use of color-odor matching task to a test population of Korean participants. Participants selected colors evoked by fragrances of three test perfumes in a blind setting. These three perfumes had characteristic hues and their associated hues were similar with the real colors of their bottles. In addition, there were significant variations in color tone across fragrance notes, viz. the top notes, middle notes, and base notes. The results of the two experiments suggest the existence of robust cross-modal associations between particular colors and fragrances in commercial perfumery.

  • Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea occurred on Prunus mume Sieb. & Zucc. in an experimetal orchard of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in Korea from 2005 to 2007. The symptoms usually started with water-soaking lesions and hollow depression on the fruit surface. The conidia of the pathogen appeared on the surface fruits. The conidia were one celled and mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were colorless or pale brown in color. The conidia were $6{\sim}17{\times}4{\sim}10{\mu}m$ in size and conidiophores were $15{\sim}30{\mu}m$ in length. The sclerotial formed abundantly on potato-dextrose agar, They were flat or irregular in shape and black in color The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was $20^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Botrytis cinerea Persoon: Fries. This is the first report on gray mold of P. mume caused by B. cinerea by in Korea.

  • Pythium blight occurred by Pythium aphanidermatum on chewing fescue cv. "Jamestowm II" from early June, 2010 and 2011 at the test field in Daegu University in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. Disease symptoms on the turfgrass were leaf blights dying from the leaf tip and root rot, which appeared patches of brown to dark brown color or gray brown color in the field. The pathogens (40-1 isolate) of Pythium blight was isolated from the diseased leaf and crown tissue and cultured on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) for identification. Lobulate sporangia were inflated, complex structures, and filamentous sporangia were usually indistinguishable from vegetative hyphae. Sequences of ribosomal RNA gene of the fungus were homologous with similarity of 100% to those of P. aphanidermatum isolates in GenBank database. Pathogenicity was also confirmed on the chewing fescue, creeping betgrass and Kentucky bluegrass by Koch's postulates. This is the first report of Pythium blight on chewing fescue caused by P. aphanidermatum in Korea.

  • Blossom blight of petunia caused by Choanephora cucurbitarum was found in greenhouses around Jinju area, Gyeongnam province, Korea in April 2001. The disease started with water-soaked lesions on the flower which rapidly withered and was rotten. Calyces developed water-soaked, dark-green lesions, and then were rotten. Whitish mycelia and monosporous sporangiola were produced on the lesions. The fungus isolated from the lesions produced white to pale yellowish brown mycelia with scattered monosporous sporangiola on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) plates. Size of sporangium was 37.2~135.8 um. Monosporous sporangiola were elliptic, fusiform or ovoid, and brown in color and their size was 10.4~22.4$\times$7.4~12.9 um. Sporangiospores were elliptic, fusiform or ovoid in shape, dark brown or brown in color and were 13.7~23.5$\times$8.7~13.8 um in size, and had appendaged appressorium of 3 or more. Zygospores were black, and 40.8~61.5 um in size. The fungus grew on PDA at 15-4$0^{\circ}C$, and optimum temperature was 3$0^{\circ}C$. This is the first report on the blossom blight of petunia caused by C. cucurbitarum in Korea.
