  • Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) disease survey of tomato plants cultivated at Youngam, Changseong and Hwasun in Jeonnam Province was conducted in 2012 to 2013. To detect TYLCV in the field, PCR assay was performed using genomic DNAs extracted from tomato samples. According to cropping pattern, 23 and 59.4% of TYLCV infections were shown in semi-forcing and retarding cropping systems, respectively, and the frequencies of diseased plants were 0.4 and and 13.1% in the two cropping systems, respectively. Especially, TYLCV incidences in the susceptible varieties were 24.3 and 83.0% in semi-forcing and retarding cropping systems, respectively. Resistant varieties showed 9.1% infection in retarding cropping system but did not in semi-forcing cropping system. Also, TYLCV was occurred on early June after transplanting on April and at approximate 20 days after transplanting on August or September.

  • Field disease incidences of squash virus diseases in Jeonnam province were estimated to be 76.1% and of delayed planting on August-September (retarding culture) and on February-March (semi-forcing culture) on glass house were 55.0% and 0%, respectively, in 2000. Disease incidences of individual squash plant within a field were 100% and 3.6%, respectively, in wild culture and retarding culture. Total of 61 samples suspected to be infected with viruses were collected in 2000 and tested by RT-PCR using specific oligonulceotide primer sets designed for the detection of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), Kyuri green mottle mosaic virus (KGMMV), Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV), Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Each specific primer set for WMV, ZYMV, and PRSV amplified expected size of DNA fragments from 16, 10, and 2 samples in wild culture, respectively. Double or triple infection were observed in 7 samples tested. In contrast, each specific primer set for WMV, ZYMV, and PRSV confirmed virus infection from 7, 6, and 6 samples, respectively, in samples collected from semi-forcing culture. Double infection of WMV and PRSV was observed in only one sample. However, no DNA fragment was amplified from RT-PCR using CGMMV, KGMMV, and CMV specific oligonucleotide primer sets indicating no CGMMV, KGMMV, or CMV infection in squash fields in Jeonnam province in 2000.

  • A field investigation was carried out for two years to analyze yield loss due to soybean anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum truncatum and to determine its economic threshold limit. Anthracnose severity in terms of % diseased pods was negatively correlated with yield, number of normal seeds per plant and number of pods per plant, and positively correlated with % abnormal seeds with correlation coefficients of -0.85, -0.78, -0.64, and 0.80, respectively. A simple linear regression model was obtained as Y=-1.7781X+164.22 with $R^2$=0.8092, when the soybean yields (Y) were predicted using anthracnose severity (X) as an independent variable. The yield levels could be predicted as high as 80.92%. Based on this equation, spray threshold without economic considerations was estimated as 6.9 in % pods infected with anthracnose. Economic threshold limit and economic spray threshold able to compensate the costs of fungicide sprays were determined as 11.9% and 9.5%, respectively.

  • Bacterial leaf blight caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. porri is one of the major bacterial diseases of garlic (Allium sativum). In South Korea, the disease has only been observed in garlic-growing regions of Jeju island. The spatial distribution pattern of the disease was analyzed by binary power law, in which the natural logarithm of the observed variance is regressed on the natural logarithm of the binomial variance. The estimated slope (b=1.361) of the regression was greater than 1 which meant that the diseased plants were aggregated. The sequential sampling plans were developed for estimating the mean incidence rate ($p_m$) and classifying the mean incidence as being below or above the critical incidence rate ($p_t$). These results could be used on more efficient and higher precisive sampling for bacterial blight of garlic compared to fixed sample sized sampling.

  • Fungicides of tebuconazole wp, iprodione wp and flusilazole wp were applied for the control of postharvest fruit rots of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) in the field in 2000 and 2001. More than 3 consecutive applications of these fungicides from the late June with 10-day-interval successfully controlled the diseases. It was found in the field trial in 2002 that 4 consecutive spays from mid of June with 10-day-interval was found to be the most effective application program for tebuconazole wp, iprodione wp and flusilazole wp, The results suggested that currently registered fungicides of benomyl wp and thiophanate-methyl wp can be substituted by tebuconazole wp, iprodione wp and flusilazole wp for the control of the diseases in Korea. Use of these fungicides can restrain emergence of fungicide resistant strains of postharvest fruit rot pathogens with benefit of reduced application of chemicals for food safety and environmental conservation.

  • Effects of seed disinfectants on loose smut (Ustilago nuda) and leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) of barley were investigated in field tests. For these experiments, seed samples carrying natural infection of Ustilago nuda and Pyrenophora graminea were used and the following fungicides were used: Baytan, Baytan U, Benlate T, Busan 30, KAC-7703, P 242, Panoctine, Sisthane Ec, Sisthane Wp, Sisthane Ds, Sodium Omadine, Terracoat Zn, Vitathiram and Zinc Omadine, respectively. Results have shown that Sisthane and Benlate T have equal effect to Vitathiram against Ustilago nuda and Pyrenophora graminea. Baytan U was effective against loose smut but inferior to leaf stripe of barley. P 242 was effective against leaf stripe but inferior to loose smut of barley. Busan 30 have shown moderately inferior effect to Vitathiram against loose smut and leaf stripe of barley. A mild inhibition of seed germination and seedling growth of barley, naked barley and wheat seeds was observed when high concentration of Sisthane and Baytan U were treated in seedling box placed in green house conditions, but no symptom observed in field conditions.

  • The powdery mildew of broad bean (Vicia faba) extensively occurred in farmers' fields in Changseon-myon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2001. Both sides of the leaves and stems were covered with white fungal spores and mycelia, and then the leaves and stems colored brown and dark brown and eventually died. Conidia and conidiophores were formed on the lesion. Conidia were cylindric, 29~45$\times$13~23 um (av, 36~18 um) in size and born singly on the conidiophore. Fibrosin bodies were not observed. Conidiophores were straight with 3-4 cylindric cells and 51~100$\times$6~10 um (av.70$\times$8 um) in size. Foot cell was 28~53$\times$7~10 um (av,39$\times$8 um) in size. Appressorium was a lobed type. Cleistothecia were not formed. This is the first report on powdery mildew of broad bean caused by Oidium sp. in Korea.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effect of boron application on the physiological response and the outbreak of Granville wilt flue-cured tobacco. NC2326 and Coker 86(flue-cured tobacco) were transplante dand investigated in all field culture plots for this experiment. Elongation of shoots were retarded, and stem heights were shortened in all boron applied plots and the more boron applied, the greater these tendency was. The ratio of root branching and root discoloration, and contraction by Granville wilt were docreased markedly in boron plots. Amount of harvested loaves (yield) was increased greatly in 2 and 4kg plots of borax and boric acid per 10a, and the increasing tendency was greater in NC2326 variety than Coker 86. Phenol compounds content in harvested leaves were higher in boron applied plots than non-applied, and was higher in Coker 86, Granville wilt resistant variety, than NC2326. The more boron applied, the higher nicotine content in the harvested leaves was.

  • Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) possesses various biological and pharmacological properties. Damping-off is a critical disease on ginseng seedlings, which is caused by the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium sp.. This disease is generally controlled by the application of fungicides, but also biological control is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to prevent ginseng damping-off. In a previous study, we screened soil-borne bacteria with potential applications as biological control agents for ginseng damping-off and selected the bacterial strain Streptomyces sp. A3265, producing antifungal substances guanidylfungin and methylguanidylfungin. In this study, we investigated control efficacy of Streptomyces sp. A3265 against ginseng damping-off in the field. As a result, the incidence of damping-off was significantly reduced when soaking ginseng seeds in the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. A3265.
