Eighty five patients of oral cavity cancer, treated with radiation at the Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Korea Cancer Center Hospital, during the period from March 1985 to September 1990 were analyzed retrospectively. Among 85 patients, 37 patients were treated with radiation only and 48 patients were treated with radiation following surgery. And 70 patients received external irradiation only by $^{60}Co$ with or without electron, the others were 7 patients for external irradiation plus interstitial implantation and 8 patients for external irradiation plus oral cone electron therapy. Primary sites were mobile tongue for 40 patients, mouth floor for 17 patients, palate for 12 patients, gingiva including retromolar trigone for 10 patients, buccal mucosa for 5 patients, and lip for 1 patient. According to pathologic classification, squamous cell carcinoma was the most common (77 patients). According to AJC TNM stage, stage I + II were 28 patients and stage III+IV were 57 patients. Acturial overall survival rate at 3 years was $43.9\%,$ 3 year survival rates were $60.9\%$ for stage I + II, and $23.1\%$ for stage III+IV, respectively. As a prognostic factor, primary T stage was a significant factor (p<0.01). The others, age, location, lymph node metastasis, surgery, radiation dose, and cell differentiation were not statistically significant. Among those factors, radiation plus surgery was more effective than radiation only in T3+T4 or in any N stage although it was not statistically sufficient (p<0.1). From those results, it was conclusive that definitive radiotherapy was more effective than surgery especially In the view of pertainig of anatomical integrity and function in early stage, and radiation plus surgery was considered to be better therapeutic tool in advanced stage.
Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the sale and purchase of an array of organic products. In particular, organic milk has grown in popularity. This growth could lead to expensive, premium retail prices for various organic cow's milk products. In fact, most consumers believe that (1) dairy farming to produce organic milk is beneficial for human health and (2) organic milk products are made without the use of various antibiotics, synthetic chemicals, genetic modification, extra hormones, and so on. Several factors, including breed, diet, and stage of lactation, are known to influence the composition of milk. Therefore, this review (1) presents a research outline to compare organic and conventional milk and (2) provides a summary of individual elements that affect the composition of milk.
This study investigates the biomechanical efficacies of various cement augmentation techniques with or without pressurization for varying degrees of osteoporotic femur. For this study, a biomechanical analysis using a finite element method (FEM) was undertaken to evaluate surgical procedures, Simulated models include the non-cemented(i.e., hip screw only, Type I), the cement-augmented(Type II), and the cemented augmented with pressurization(Type III) models. To simulate the fracture plane and other interfacial regions, 3-D contact elements were used with appropriate friction coefficients. Material properties of the cancellous bone were varied to accommodate varying degrees of osteoporosis(Singh indices, II∼V). For each model. the following items were analyzed to investigate the effect surgical procedures in relation to osteoporosis of varying degrees : (a) von Mises stress distribution within the femoral head in terms of volumetric percentages. (b) Peak von Mises stress(PVMS) within the femoral head and the surgical constructs. (c) Maximum von Mises strain(MVMS) within the femoral head, (d) micromotions at the fracture plane and at the interfacial region between surgical construct and surrounding bone. Type III showed the lowest PVMS and MVMS at the cancellous bone near the bone-construct interface regardless of bone densities. an indication of its least likelihood of construct loosening due to failure of the host bone. Particularly, its efficacy was more prominent when the bone density level was low. Micromotions at the interfacial surgical construct was lowest in Type III. followed by Type I and Type II. They were about 15-20% of other types. which suggested that pressurization was most effective in limiting the interfacial motion. Our results demonstrated the cement augmentation with hip screw could be more effective when used with pressurization technique for the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures. For patients with low bone density. its effectiveness can be more pronounced in limiting construct loosening and promoting bone union.
This study aims to demonstrate the effect of chitosan oligosaccharide on the ultrastructural changes in the mouse liver toxicated by carbon tetrachloride $(CCl_4)$. A healthy male ICR mouse that weighted $27{\pm}2gm$ was used for experiment. The experimental group was divided into three groups; the group A; the pretreated group with chitosan oligosaccharide, the group B; the simultaneous group, the group C; treated only the $CCl_4$. The group A was simultaneously treated with chitosan oligosaccharide and $CCl_4$ after pretreated with chitosan oligosaccharide for 7 days. The group B injected $CCl_4$ and chitosan oligosaccharide to the intraperitoneal. The group C injected with only $CCl_4$ to the intraperitoneal. The results were as follow: In the group A, the nuclear membrane and the mitochondria were observed almost normal in shapes at overall the time. Some lamellae of the RER (rough endoplasmic reticulum) destructed until 48 hours but ribosome attached. The destructed lamellae reformed at 72 hours but the smooth membrane vesicles not observed. The lysosomes observed at 72 hours. At 96 hours, all organelles showed in normal shapes. In the group B, changes of nuclear membranes were relatively lighter than group C. Mitochondria observed normal shape through the time. Parts of RER reformed the lamellae, other parts dilated inner cavity. And lipid droplet observed around the 24 hours. Glycogen and lysosome observed 48 hours and 72 hours, respectively. In the group C, nuclear membrane was irregular and nuclear cytoplasm condensed through the time. The lamellae of RER destructed from 24 to 96 hours. Smooth membrane vesicles observed in the cytoplasm at 48 ours. Mitochondria was less effected by toxic. And from the 24 hours, the variable sizes of lipid droplets observed in tile cytoplasm. These results suggest that chitosan oligosaccharide attenuates the toxic effect of the carbon tetrachloride in the mouse liver.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Nd:YAG laser on mechanically exposed pulp of dog by the observation of pulpal inflammatory change and heal process including dentinal bridge, structural changes of fibroblasts of thr remaining vital pulp tissue. In experimental group 1, the exposed pulps were irradiated with Nd:YAG laser(3W, 30Hz, 0.2sec) for $2{\sim}3$ second followed by capped with aluminium tin foil. In group 2 and group 3, the exposed pulps were irradiated with Nd:YAG laser via contact(Group 2) and non-contact(Group 3) methods followed by capped with calciumhydroxide paste. The animal were sacrificed at the intervals of 3, 7, 14 and 30days for histologic evaluation. The results were as follows : 1. The dentinal bridges were formwd more fast and broadly in the experimental group 1 and 2 than other groups, but there were no histologic differences in the degree of their formation among control group, experimental group 1. 2. Odontoblastic activities at amputated pulp was increased in the experimental group 2, 3 than other group but there no histologic difference in the odontblastic activitiy among control group, experimental group 1. 3. The infalmmation was severe at the postoperative 1 week of all groups, but its condition subsideed with time elapsed. At the postoperative 3, 7 days, its condition in experimental group 2, 3 were less severe than in the group 1. 4. There were no histologic differences between the experimental group 2 and 3 according to the degree of dentin bridge formation.
Objectives : The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of subacute treatment with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(paroxetine and sertraline) on immobility in the forced swim test(FST) and on FST-induced changes in immune parameters of the mice. Methods : Authors applied a modified method of FST by Porsolt et al. Over 5 BALB/c mice were used for each group of experiments. To explore the changes in immune parameters by FST, authors investigated the production of anti-rat RBC antibody, concanavalin A(ConA)- or lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated splenocytes proliferation assay and cytokine gene expression. Results : Both paroxetine and sertraline decreased the duration of immobility in a dose-related manner. FST-performed mice showed a significant decrease in mitogenic responses of splenocytes and a slight increasing tendency in anti-rat RBC antibody response. All these responses were attenuated significantly by paroxetine and attenuated nearly nominal significance level by sertraline. The cytokine profiles of ConA-stimulated splenocytes from FST-performed mice showed stronger expression of IL-4 and weaker expression of IL-2 than control mice, and no changes in the expressions of IFN-$\gamma$ and lymphotoxin. IL-6 and IL-10 were not expressed in both group of mice. The pretreatment of paroxetine and sertraline attenuated the altered cytokine expressions in FST-performed mice to some extent. Some alterations of the expressions of IL-6 and IL-10 were observed in the mice which the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors had been pretreated. Conclusion : The subacute treatment of paroxetine and sertraline attenuated the FST-induced behavioral and immune changes, and these serotonin reuptake inhibitors may exert some modulating effects on the immune system by the induction of cytokine gene expression, especially IL-6 and IL-10.
The cytochrome P450s (P450s) metabolizing natural products are among the most versatile biological catalysts known in plants, but knowledge of the structural basis for their broad substrate specificity has been limited. The activity of p-coumarate 3-hydroxylase (C3H) is thought to be essential for the biosynthesis of lignin and many other phenylpropanoid pathway products in plants however, all attempts to express and purify the protein corresponding C3H gene have failed. As a result, no conditions suitable for the unambiguous assay of the enzyme are known. The detailed understanding of the mechanism and substrate-specificity of C3Hdemands a method for the production of active protein on the milligram scale. We have developed a bacterial expression and purification system for the plant C3H, which allows for the quick expression and purification of active wild-type C3H via introduction of combinational mutagenesis. The modified cytochrome P450 C3H ($C3H_{mod}$) could be purified in the absence of detergent using immobilized metal affinity chromatography and size exclusion chromatography following extraction from isolated membranes in a high salt buffer and catalytically activated. This method makes the use of isotopic labeling of C3H for NMRstudies and X-ray crystallography practical, and is also applicable to other plant cytochrome P450 proteins.
The purpose of this study was to examine physical properties of the addition of green tea powder on bread flour and dough rheology of white pan bread. Three levels(0.1, 0.5 and 1.0% ) of each green tea powder with bread flour were tested for their effects in dough mixing using rapid disco analyzer, alveogram and farinogram. Addition of green tea powder tended to reduce initial pasting temperature and increase peak viscosity, break down and set back. L(extensibility) and G(swelling index) value in alveogram showed decrement with increasing green tea powder. These meant that the volume of white pan bread would show same tendency. The use of green tea powder increased consistency and water absorption of the bread flour but decreased development time, salability and degree of softening on farinogram. White pan bread with green tea powder had higher value of hardness and springness than without it. Sensory evaluation determined that the white pan bread with 0.5% green tea powder had the highest score.

To lessen the initial level of microorganism in kimchi, the preparation method of seasoning mixture was modified and electrolyzed acid-water was substitute for washing water and brine water. Changes in the microbial counts of the red pepper powder-garlic mixture prepared with red pepper powder, garlic and 4.8% (w/w) water (tap water and electrolyzed acid-water) of manufactured kimchi showed that coliform count and E. coli count were reduced to 93% and 98%, of the initial level in the tap water added red pepper powder-garlic mixture and 97% and 99% in the electrolzed acid-water added mixture after 6 hours of mix. After 24 hours of mix, no E. coli was recovered in borth mixtures. Microbial levels were revealed as $2.4{\times}10^5\;CFU/g$ for total count, $2.3{\times}10^5\;CFU/g$ for Lactobacillus count. $1.0{\times}10^2{\;}CFU/g$ of coliform count and $10^1\;CFU/g$ of E. coli count in the seasoning mixture prepared by the general method, and $4.2{\times}10^5\;CFU/g$ of total count, $4.0{\times}10^5CFU/g$ of Lactobacillus count, $1.0{\times}10^3\;CFU/g$ of coliorm count and $4.0{\times}10^2\;CFU/g$ of E. coli count in the mixture propared by the modified method. During fermentation at $10^{\circ}C$, the levels of total and Lactobacillus counts in kimchi prepared by the modified method were significantly lower than those of kimchi were recovered in kimchi prepared by the modified method, whereas there were at the level of $10^1\;CFU/g$ in kimchi prepared by the general method. The pH and acidity of kimchi prepared by the modified method were 4.66 and 0.54%, respectively, whereas those in kimchi prepared b the general method were 4.51 and 0.70%, respectively. But after 14 days of fermentation significant differences were not observed in the changes of microbial, pH and acidity for both kimchi.

Slurry type shield would be very effective for the tunnelling in a sandy ground, when the slurry pressure would be properly adjusted. Low slurry pressure could cause a tunnel face failure or a ground settlement in front of the tunnel face. Thus, the stability of tunnel face could be maintained by applying an excess slurry pressure that is larger than the active earth pressure. However, the slurry pressure should increase properly because an excessively high slurry pressure could cause the slurry flow out or the passive failure of the frontal ground. It is possible to apply the high slurry pressure without passive failure if a horizontal impermeable layer is located in the ground in front of the tunnel face, but its location, size, and effects are not clearly known yet. In this research, two-dimensional model tests were carried out in order to find out the effect of a horizontal impermeable layer for the slurry shield tunnelling in a saturated sandy ground. In tests slurry pressure was increased until the slurry flowed out of the ground surface or the ground fails. Location and dimension of the impermeable layer were varied. As results, the maximum and the excess slurry pressure in sandy ground were linearly proportional to the cover depth. Larger slurry pressure could be applied to increase the stability of the tunnel face when the impermeable layer was located in the ground above the crown in front of the tunnel face. The most effective length of the impermeable grouting layer was 1.0 ~ 1.5D, and the location was 1.0D above the crown level. The safety factor could be suggested as the ratio of the maximum slurry pressure to the active earth pressure at the tunnel face. It could also be suggested that the slurry pressure in the magnitude of 3.5 ~4.0 times larger than the active earth pressure at the initial tunnel face could be applied if the impermeable layer was constructed at the optimal location.
