  • The packaged optical fiber Bragg grating sensors which were networked by multiplexing the Bragg grating sensors with WDM technology were investigated in application for the structural health monitoring of the marine trestle structure transporting the ship. The optical fiber Bragg grating sensor was packaged in a cylindrical shape made of aluminum tubes. Furthermore, after the packaged optical fiber sensor was inserted in polymeric tube, the epoxy was filled inside the tube so that the sensor has resistance and durability against sea water. The packaged optical fiber sensor component was investigated under 0.2 MPa of hydraulic pressure and was found to be robust. The number and location of Bragg gratings attached at the trestle were determined where the trestle was subject to high displacement obtained by the finite element simulation. Strain of the part in the trestle being subjected to the maximum load was analyzed to be ${\sim}1000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and thus shift in Bragg wavelength of the sensor caused by the maximum load of the trestle was found to be ~1,200 pm. According to results of the finite element analysis, the Bragg wavelength spacings of the sensors were determined to have 3~5 nm without overlapping of grating wavelengths between sensors when the trestle was under loads and thus 50 of the grating sensors with each module consisting of 5 sensors could be networked within 150 nm optical window at 1550 nm wavelength of the Bragg wavelength interrogator. Shifts in Bragg wavelength of the 5 packaged optical fiber sensors attached at the mock trestle unit were well interrogated by the grating interrogator which used the optical fiber loop mirror, and the maximum strain rate was measured to be about $235.650{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. The modelling result of the sensor packaging and networking was in good agreements with experimental result each other.

  • In this study, we develop liquid density sensor by measuring of balanced position between gravity and bouyancy, corresponding to liquid density, using distance measuring by magnetostriction technology. For improvement of accuracy of liquid density sensor system. And we derive the related equation between liquid density and moving distance of density sensor, and make the calibration method for liquid density sensor by magnetostriction technology. Using fabricated liquid density sensing system and derived equation, have measured the density of several liquids. And compare it to measuring results using Oscillating U-tube type high accuracy density meter, having 0.000001 g/cc resolution. The deviation of results between two density measuring systems was less than 0.001 g/cc.

  • Ubiquitous computing has had an effect to politics, economics, society, culture, education and so forth. For effective management of huge Ubiquitous networks environment, various computers which are connected to networks has to decide automatic optimum with intelligence. Currently in many areas, data mining has been used effectively to construct intelligent systems. We proposed a hybrid support vector machine for Ubiquitous data mining which realized intelligent Ubiquitous computing environment. Many data were collected by sensor networks in Ubiquitous computing environment. There are many noises in these data. The aim of proposed method was to eliminate noises from stream data according to sensor networks. In experiment, we verified the performance of our proposed method by simulation data for Ubiquitous sensor networks.

  • Overload vehicles have demoralizing influence upon the social overhead capital, economics of nation, traffic flow and road safe as various components. Accordingly, this study established a ubiquitous sensor network system to develop an intelligent regulation system to monitor overloaded vehicles in motion. and Unlike WIM, after detecting the axle of driving vehicles by measuring deformation of roads, this system calculates the weights of vehicles by using signals from the strain sensors installed under the road and an analysis method. Also the study conducted an simulation test for vehicle load analysis using genetic algorithm. and tested wireless sensor for USN system.

  • A Safety Monitoring System using a laser and 2-D arrayed photo sensors is developed. To monitor of the deformation and small rotation of structure the developed optical system using 2-D photo sensor array was used to detect the variation of optical orbit of laser which was induced by deformation of the structure. Also, an operating program to manage the system and an algorithm for the data acquisition and the database are introduced. In this study, we demonstrated the capabilities of this system by laboratory experiments before applying the system to the field.

  • Deflection and deformation occur easily in structures with long length, such as bridges and pipelines. Shape monitoring is required for ensuring their structural health. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor can be used for monitoring a large-scale structure because of its advantage of multiplexing. In this study, FBG sensors were used for monitoring a composite beam structure, and its strains were measured at multiple points. Thereafter, a shape estimation technique based on the strains was studied. Particularly, a three-dimensional shape estimation technique was proposed for accurate structural health monitoring. A simple experiment was conducted to verify the performance of the shape estimation technique. The result revealed that the estimated shape of the composite beam structure was in agreement with the actual shape obtained after the deformation of the specimen. Additionally, the deflection at a specific point was verified by comparing the estimated and actual deformations measured using a micrometer.
