  • This paper presents on the shear behavior prediction of reinforced concrete beams using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM). The TATM can evaluate the stress-strain relationships for cracked concrete by transforming stresses and strains for principal plane into those over the crack surfaces. This proposed analytical method simplifies the Fixed Angle Softened Truss Model (FA-STM) and removes the limitation of applicability of the FA-STM. The shear.strength and strain of reinforced concrete beams are predicted by using the TATM. For the verification of proposed method, experimental results of reinforced concrete beams were compared with theoretical results by the TATM, FA-STM and Rotating Angle Softened Truss Model (RA-STM).

  • In this paper, the cyclic soil behavior model. which can accommodate the cyclic hardening, was developed by modifying the original parallel IWAN model. In order to consider the irrecoverable plastic strain of soil. the cyclic threshold strain, above which the backbone curve deviates from the original curve, was defined and the accumulated strain was determined by summation of the strains above the cyclic threshold in the stress-strain curve with applying Masing rule on unloading and reloading curves. The isotropic hardening elements are attached to the original parallel IWAN model and the slip stresses in the isotropic hardening elements are shown to increase according to the hardening functions. The hardening functions have a single parameter to account for the cyclic hardening and are defined by the symmetric limit cyclic loading test in forms of accumulated shear strain. The model development procedures are included in this paper and the verifications of developed model are discussed in the companion paper.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop improved model for joints of tunnel based on Disturbed State Concept (DSC) model. DSC model is verified with respect to comprehensive laboratory tests performed by Schneider and back prediction results. Based on results of this research, it can be stated that DSC model is capable of characterizing the strain softening and dilative behavior of rough granite joints under four different constant normal stresses.

  • The failure behavior of RC structure was exceedingly affected by the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone due to the strain localization behavior on the tension softening materials. However, it is very difficult to quantify and assess the local strain occurring in the failure zone by the conventional test method. In this study, image processing technology, which is available to measure the strain up to the complete failure of RC structures, was used to estimate the local strain distribution and the size of failure zone. In order to verify the reliability and validity for the image processing technology, the strain transition acquired by the image processing technology was compared with strain values measured by the concrete gauge on the uniaxial compressive specimens. Based on the verification of image processing technology for the uniaxial compressive specimens, the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone of deep beam was measured using the image processing technology. With the results of test, the principal tensile/compressive strain contours were drawn. Using the strain contours, the size of the failure zone and the local strain distribution on the failure of the deep beam was evaluated. The results of strain contour showed that image processing technology is available to assess the failure behavior of deep beam and obtain the local strain values on the domain of the post-peak failure comparatively.

  • The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack, and peel-off failure, shear bond failure in the end contact zone, was investigated due to humidity changes. To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial surface humidity of overlaid concrete structures was 100% r.H. With a atmospheric humidity of 55% r.H. and two load cases for drying(LCI), curing and drying(LC2), the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface of CM2O, ECM25, and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone without CM2O. The peel-off failure was proved to be the main cause of the damage in the overlaid concrete structures. Only for overlay thickness of 1cm occurred no peel-off failure in the case of drying after a long-term public use(LC1). In the case of curing and drying during overlay work(LC2) occurred the peel-off failure within 1.5days for all the overlaid concrete structures.

  • The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack and peel-off failure in the contact zone, was investigated due to temperature shock(rainfall). To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Rainfall intensity, overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial temperature of overlaid concrete structures was heated up to 55$\^{C}$ by the solar heat. With a rain temperature 10$\^{C}$ and the rainfall intensity of nR=1/a, tR=10min, 60min, the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone. The vortical tensile stress increasing with overlay thickness was proved to be the cause of peel-off failure in the contact zone. The formulae for relationship between the vertical tensile stress and overlay thickness, material properties were derived. Using this formulae, it is possible to select proper material and overlay thickness to prevent failure in the contact zone due to temperature shock caused by rainfall.

  • For the deep underground excavation site with the geological complexity of soft seam and hard rock, the numerical analysis and in-situ measurement on the behaviors of roadway and surrounding rock according to stepwise excavation of the steep soft seam are carried out. The strata behavior is modeled using elasto-plastic FEM considering the empirical failure criteria of Hoek & Brown and the strain-softening model. Hydraulic pressure capsule, MPBX and tape extensometer are installed around the roadway for the in-situ measurement of rock stress and deformation. Despite the complexity of geology and excavation procedure, the elasto-plastic analysis considering the empirical failure criteria of Hoek & Brown and the strain-softening model shows good agreement with the in-situ measurement. Comparison of numerical modeling with in-situ measurement enables to predict the behaviors of the roadway and to obtain design parameters for the excavation and support at depth.
