  • A probabilistic construction stage analysis using the Monte Carlo Simulation was performed to address the effects of uncertainty regarding the material properties, environmental factors, and applied forces. In the previous research, creep and shrinkage were assumed to be completely independent random variables. However, because of the common influencing factors in the material models for the creep and shrinkage estimation, strong correlation between creep and shrinkage can be presumed. In this paper, an Monte Carlo Simulation using CEB-FIB creep and shrinkage equations were performed to actually evaluate the correlation coefficient between two phenomena, and then another Monte Carlo Simulation to evaluate the statistical properties of axial strain affected by partially correlated random variables including the material properties, environmental factors, and applied forces. The results of Monte Carlo Simulation were compared with measured strains of a column on a first story in a 58-story building. Comparison indicated that the variation due to the uncertainty related with the material properties were most severe. And measured strains was within the range of mean+standard deviation.

  • This study describes the basic concept and the applicability of Hybrid Reinforcement System using conventional steel reinforcing bars and Fiber Reinforced Polymer bars. The concrete bridge decks are assumed to be supported by beams and reinforced with two layers of reinforcing bars. In concrete bridge deck using HRS, the top tensile force for negative moment zone on beam supports is assumed to be resisted by FRP reinforcing bars, and the bottom tensile force for positive moment zone in the middle of hem supports is assumed to be resisted by conventional steel reinforcing bars, respectively. The FRP reinforcing bars are non-corrosive. Thus, the steel reinforcement is as far away as possible from the top surface of the deck and protected from intrusion of corrosive agent. HRS concrete bridge deck has sufficient ductility at ultimate state as the following reasons; 1) FRP bars have lower elastic modulus and higher ultimate strain than steel re-bars have, 2) FRP bars have lower ultimate strain if provided higher reinforcement ratio, 3) ultimate strain of FRP bars can be reduced if FRP bars are unbonded. Test results showed that FRP and HRS concrete slabs are not failed by FRP bar rupture, but failed by concrete compression in the range of ordinary reinforcement ratio. Therefore, in continuous concrete bridge deck using HRS, steel reinforcing bars for positive moment yield and form plastic hinge first and compressive concrete fail in the bottom of supports or in the top of the middle of supports last. Thus, bridge deck consumes significant inelastic strain energy before its failure.

  • In order to investigate the high temperature deformation characteristics in YBaiCu307-, oxide superconductor, the compression test was performed at temperatures from $890^{\circ}C$ to $930^{\circ}C$ at initial strain rate between $1.0 x 10^{-5}s^{-1}\; and \; 1.0^{-4}s^{-1}$. As the temperature increased and the initial strain rate decreased, the flow stress decreased. The strain rate sensitivity exponent measured as 0.41-0.46, supporting occurence of a superplastic deformation. The activation energy for superplastic deformation was calculated as 500-580KJ/mol, which decreased with increasing Ag content. Microstructure of the superplastically-deformed specimens showed that a grain growth occurred during deformation, and it appeared to be considerable when Ag content increased, but most grains still remained equiaxed after deformation. In this study, the deformation mechanism of YBCO superconductor was the grain boundary sliding with the diffusional accommodation and the contribution of the gram boundary sliding to the total strain was estimated to be 65%.

  • Optical fiber cable, as a sensor, was installed on the wall of KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) Underground Research Tunnel(KURT) in order to monitor the physical stability of the tunnel, which was constructed for technical development and demonstration of radioactive waste disposal. This monitoring system has two simultaneous measurements of temperature and strain over time using Brillouin backscatter. According to the results of the monitoring from Jan. 2008 to Nov. 2009, there is no significant displacement or movement at the tunnel wall However, the cumulative volume of total strain increased slightly as time passes with the comparison of the reference observation, which was measured in Jan. 2008. The change in cumulative volume of total strain indicates that the strain level had been affected by saturation and de-saturation phenomena due to groundwater fluctuation at several points at KURT. This system is based on the distributed sensing technique concept, not point sensing. By using this system, a displacement can be detected with the range from $20{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ to $28,000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ every 1m interval in minimum. A temperature variation can be monitored at every 0.5m interval with the resolution of 0.01 in minimum. Based on the study, this monitoring system is potentially applicable to long term monitoring systems for radioactive waste disposal project as well as other structures and underground openings.

  • This paper describes the correlation and relationship between elastic moduli measured by three stiffness measurement methods with different mechanical characteristics to evaluate the compaction characteristics of subgrade soils. The Soil Stiffness Gauge (SSG) with very small strain (${\approx}0.001%$) ranges, static Plate Loading Test (PLT) with mid-level strain (${\approx}0.01{\sim}0.1%$) ranges, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) using penetration resistance were implemented to measure the elastic modulus. To use the elastic modulus measured by different measurement methods with a wide range of strain in practice, it is required to identify the correlation and relationship of measured values in advance. The comparison results of the measured elastic moduli ($E_{SSG}$, $E_{PLT}$, $E_{DCP}$) using the three measurement methods for domestic and overseas subgrade soils under various conditions indicate that the evaluated elastic modulus relies on the types of soils and the level of stress condition. The correlation analysis of the measured elastic moduli except the data of cement treated soils indicates that the static elastic modulus ($E_{PLT}$) is evaluated as about 60 to 80% of the dynamic elastic modulus ($E_{SSG}$). Unusual soils such as cement treated soils are required to be corrected by the stress correction during the correlation analysis with typical soils, because these types of soils are sensitive to the stress condition when measuring the static elastic modulus ($E_{PLT}$) of soils. In addition, when considering the use of DCP data for the evaluation of the elastic modulus ($E_{DCP}$), the measured data of the elastic modulus less than 200 MPa show more reliable correlation.

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on the behavior of earth retaining wall system with emphasis on the groundwater lowering. Using the 2D stress-pore pressure coupled analysis, the effects of ground excavation and groundwater interaction were examined using wall horizontal deformation, ground surface movement, plastic strain pattern, effective stress distribution and axial stress of strut. In addition, based on the results from a parametric study on a wide range of soil profile and initial ground water table level, the ranges of wall displacement and ground deformation were suggested quantitatively.

  • Microelectronics components contain various materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). Although a large amount of published data on the CTE of standard materials is available, it occasionally becomes necessary to measure this property for a specific actual material over a particular temperature range. A change in the temperature of a material causes a corresponding change in the output of the strain gage installed on the specimen because of not only the mechanical load but also the temperature change. In this paper, a detailed technique for CTE measurement based on these thermal characteristics of strain gages is proposed and its reliability is evaluated. A steel specimen, aluminum specimen, and copper specimen, whose CTE values are well known, were used in this evaluation. The proposed technique was successfully applied to the measurement of the CTE of a coreless package substrate composing of electronics packages.

  • Dry shrinkage md temperature change cause to develope concrete bridge decks on main girders have initial unidirectional cracks in longitudinal or transverse direction. As they receive traffic loads, the crack gradually propagate in different directions depending on the concrete dimension and reinforcement ratio. Since existing equations that predict crack width are mostly based on the one directional bond-slip theory, it is difficult to determine the actual crack width of a bridge deck with varying the spacing of rebar or strengthening material and to estimate the improvement rate in serviceability of the strengthened bridge deck. In this study, crack propagation mechanism is identified based on the test results and a new crack prediction equation is proposed for evaluation of serviceability. Although more accurate results are derived using the proposed equation, the extent of error is increased as the strain of the rebar or the strengthening material increases after the yielding of rebar Therefore, further research is required to better predict the crack width after the rebar yields under fatigue loading condition.

  • This study was intended to evaluate the properties of concrete incorporating stone powders which are created during crushing natural stones to produce crushed aggregates. For concretes with 0~30 wt.% partial replacement fine aggregates with stone powders, experiments of slump, air content, strength and drying shrinkage were carried out. The experiments found that the increase of the amount of stone powders sharply decreased slump and air content. Partially using stone powders instead of fine aggregates was found to increase both compressive and tensile strength slightly. Substituting higher amount of stone powders presented higher drying shrinkage. When HRWRA was added into the concrete with stone powders in order to obtain workability similar to that of plain concrete without stone powders for the same water-cement ratio and unit weight of cement, air content increased with the amount of HRWRA but strength and drying shrinkage were hardly affected by adding HRWRA.
