It is very improtant to evaluate the reliable nonlinear deformational characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions but also for the soil dynamic problems. Field testings such as crosshole and pressuremeter tests can be used to determine the modulus of soils under in-situ conditions, but it is not possible to determine the modulus over the entire strain amplitude range. Laboratory methods such as resonant column 1 torsional shear test can be used to determine the modulus over the whole strain amplitude range, but it is very difficult to obtain the representative undisturbed samples on the sixte. For the reliable evaluation of nonlinear deformation characteristics of soils on a typical site, small strain modulus obtained from field testy and nomalized modulus reduction curve determined by laboratory bests need to be combined. In this paper, laboratory and Held testy were performed at a sixte which consisted of granite wearthered residual boils to evaluate the nonlinear deformational characteristics of coils such as the effects of strain amplitude, loading frequency, confining pressure and sample disturbance. It has been shorn that when the effects of these factors are properly taken into account, the stiffness values evaluated by various field and labrotary tests are comparable to each other fairly well. Finally, the procedure to evaluate the nonlinear deformstional characteristics of the sixte was proposed.
For achieving stability and economic construction at a retaining wall construction site, quantitative parameters of soil properties with excavation steps coincides with the actual field site. The main parameters of retaining wall design such as deformation modulus and modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction are common with N value of standard penetration test. Therefore, this study is compared and analyzed about the mutual relationship which is SPT, PBT and PMT for overcoming inconsistency of the existing retaining wall design generalized. In addition, modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction and reduction factor with excavation steps are proposed through back analysis of elasto-plasticity and finite element method with actual field monitoring data. Finally, it is purpose that parameter errors are reduced for applying effective retaining wall design at a construction small and medium-sized.
Both resonant column (RC) and torsional shear(TS) tests were performed at small to intermediate strain levels to investigate deformational characteristics of cohesive soils. The effects of variables such as strain amplitude, loading frequency, and number of loading cycles were studied. Plasticity index was found to be an important variables in evaluating these effects. Soils tested include undisturbed silts and clays and compacted subgrade soils. At small strains below the elastic threshold, shear modulus is independent of number of loading cycles and strain amplitude. Small strain material damping exists wi th ranges be tween 1.1% and 1.7% for 75 tests. The elastic threshold strain increases as confining pressure and plasticity index increases. Above the cyclic threshold strain, the modulus of cohesive soil decreases with increasing number of cycles while damping ratio is almost independent of number of load cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of cohesive soils obtanined by RC test are higher than those from 75 test because of the frequency effect. Shear modulus of cohesive soil increases linearly as a function of the logarithm of loading frequency.
In this study, correlation between measured deformation modulus using pressuremeter and RMR value conducted in 10 sites is analyzed, and applicability of the conventional empirical formulas to the rock masses in Korea are analyzed, It is found that if RMR is below 40, the correlation between deformation modulus and RMR accords Kim Gyo-won's formula and Aydan, Serafim and Pereira's one well, but if the RMR exceeds 40, the correlation was lower than those from the formula. Such results may be attribute to the fact that during classification of RMR, scores are weighed relatively more in joint conditions and apertures than such highly correlational items as uniaxial compression strength or RQD, and RMR would not be evaluated qualitatively due to different weathering degrees and rock mass types as well as engineers' personal errors. Sandstone among sedimentary rocks are quite well accord with suggested equation, but correlation of other rocks are due to large variance. In this study, correlation expressions of various rocks are proposed as the function of exponential based on the field test data.

Structural pavement analysis considering lateral loads of moving vehicle was carried out in order to simulate passing vehicle loads under various interface conditions. To verify of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of layer interface effect parameters, this study compared outputs by using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program and KENLAYER, multi-layer elastic analysis as vertical load was applied to the surface of asphalt pavements. Pavement performance depending on interface conditions was quantitatively evaluated and fundamental study of layer interface effect parameters was performed in this study. As results of the study, if only vertical loads of moving vehicle is applied, subdivision of either fully bonded or fully unbonded is enough to indicate interface effect parameters. On the other hand, when lateral loads are applied with vertical loads, pavement behavior and performance are greatly changed with respect to layer interface conditions. The thinner thickness of the asphalt layer is and the smaller elastic moduli of the asphalt layer is, the more pavement behavior is influenced by interface conditions. In addition, regression analysis equation analytically computing tensile strain which was considered thicknesses and elastic moduli of the asphalt layer and layer interface effect parameters at the bottom of the asphalt layer was presented using database from numerical analyses on national pavement model sections.
It is crucial to decide reasonably the parameters necessary for design through research on the characteristics of rock in order to analyze stability of rock structure. This article has conducted both pressure meter test, uniaxial and triaxial compression test to the areas of andesite or tuff located in local regions such as Yeosu, Gwangju, Yangsan, Busan, and Daejeon and has comparatively analyzed previously proposed estimative formulas. According to the result of estimating the deformation modulus through using the damping coefficient suggested by Nicholson & Bieniawski, when RMR is less than 60, it is desirable to use the result of the pressure meter test considering the damping coefficient. If the RMR value is over 60, however, the formula suggested by Kim Gyo-won has been proved to be the most applicable. Moreover, according to the result of comparing the RMR, adhesion, and angle of internal friction, both the adhesion and angle of internal friction best correspond to the formula proposed by Tsuchiya. Comparatively analyzing the relations between the rock deformation modulus and RMR and also suggesting the formula of calculating the shear strength parameter to use the RMR value, this study did not include the deformation modulus and shear strength parameter as factors to decide the RMR index. Since result can differ by several factors, it will be necessary afterwards to suggest practical estimative formulas applicable to the actual spots of Korea.
To know the importance of soil paramters which are used to estimate the deformation and porepressure of soil, the sensitivity for soil parameters in elastic analysis is analyzed. Using the consolidation teat results of several cohesive soils, soil parameters are estimated by back analysis method, and from the parameters the deformations and porepressures of the soil are estimated by elastic analysis, In elastic analysis for soil-deformation and porepressure, the sensitivity for the Young's modulus is large, and the esimation of Young's modulus is more important in pro- portion to the size of stress. Using the measured results during initial short period in small stress, the soil parameters can be correctly estimated by back analysis method. To decrease the iteration number in back analysis and to get the better paramters, the initial measurements in more nodes are required and the more accurate initial measurements are required.
In this study, a newly modified 3-dimensional strain-dependent hydraulic conductivity modification relation which incorporates the influences of normal deformation and shear dilation is suggested. Since rock mass is simulated as a orthogonally jointed medium, an anisotropic hydraulic conductivity field can be evaluated using that relation. The empirical relationship on the basis of GSI and disturbance factor has been used to estimate the value of a modulus reduction ratio (ratio of rock mass deformation modulus to rock matrix elastic modulus). Principal hydraulic conductivity directions is not generally coincident with the global coordinate due to the inclining of joint and the influence of joint inclination is evaluated under strain rotation. Result shows that change of hydraulic conductivity does decreases with the increase of GSI and disturbance factor has much effects on the hydraulic conductivity of rock mass getting GSI value above 50. It is found that the inclination of joint impacts on the variation of hydraulic conductivity.

The soils used as trackbed in Korea are selected using USCS utilizing basic soil properties such as Grain Size Distribution(GSD), % passing of #200 sieve ($P_{200}$), % passing of #4 sieve ($P_4$), Coefficient of uniformity ($C_u$), and Coefficient of curvature ($C_c$). Degree of compaction of the soils adapted in the code by KR should be evaluated by maximum dry density (${\gamma}_{d-max}$) and deformation modulus $E_{v2}$. The most important influencing factor that is critical to stability and deformation of the compacted soils used as trackbed is stiffness. Thus, it is necessary to construct a correlation between the modulus and the basic soil properties of trackbed soil in order to redefine a new soil classification system adaptable only to railway construction. To construct the relationship, basic soil test data is collected as a database, including GSD, maximum dry unit weight (${\gamma}_{d-max}$), OMC, $P_{200}$, $P_4$, $C_u$, $C_c$, etc.; deformation modulus $E_{v2}$ and $E_{vd}$ are obtained independently by performing a Repeated Plated Bearing Test (RPBT) and Light Weight Deflectometer Test (LWDT) for ten different railway construction sites. A linear regression analysis is performed using SPSS to obtain the relationship between the basic soil properties and the deformation modulus $E_{v2}$ and $E_v$. Based on the constructed relationship and the various obtained mechanical test data, a new soil classification system will be proposed later as a guideline for the design and construction of trackbed foundation in Korea.
This study presents new method in which to derive the constraint coefficient from the quantity of angular deformation by welding measured by varying the shape of welded joints and the magnitude of constraints by varying the shape of welded joints and the magnitude of constraints by experiment and from the result analyzed by elastic FEM method and then to decide equivalent load with it The numerical analysis results by this new method verified the validity by agreeing with the experimental result on specimen. In addition These results are applicable to the prediction of the quantity of welding deformation for large structures regardless of the size and the shape While in the effects of the constraints based on the shape of welded joints in the case of Butt welding when the constraint coefficients are not considered the deformed quantity is produced larger than one by the experiment and consequently is largely affected by the constraints But in the case of Fillet welding the deformed quantity is seldom affected regardless of considering the constraint coefficients or not.
