Because of relatively heavy dead weight of concrete itself and unavoidable heat of massive concrete in bridge piers, circular hollow columns are widely used in Korean highway bridges. Since the occurrence of 1995 Kobe earthquake, there have been much concerns about seismic design for various infrastructures, inclusive of bridge structures. It is, however, understood that there are not much research works for nonlinear behavior of circular hollow columns subjected to eqrthquake motions. The objective of this experimental research is to investigate nonlinear behavior of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers under the quasi-static cyclic load, and then to enhance their ductility by strengthening the plastic hinge region with glassfiber sheets. Particularly for this test, constant 10 cyclic loads have been repeatedly actuated to investigate the magnitude of strength degradation for the displacement ductility factor. Important test parameters are seismic design, confinement steel ratio, axial force and load pattern. It is observed from quasi-static tests for 7 bridge piers that the seismically designed columns and the retrofitted columns show better performance than the nonseismically designed colums, i.e. about 20% higher for energy dissipation capacity and about 70% higher for curvatures.
High-rise residential buildings these days tend to adopt a building frame system as primary earthquake resisting structural system for some architectural reasons. But there exist several ambiguities in designing such building frame systems according to current codes with regards to : the effective stiffness property of RC cracked section in static and dynamic analyses, analytical model to evaluate story drift ratio, and deformation compatibility requirements of frames. The comparative study for these issues by appling KBC 2005 to a typical building frame system shows that demands of member strength and story drift ratio can be different significantly depending on engineer's Interpretation and application of code requirements. And a building frame system can be noneconomical, compared with the dual system, because of higher demands on strength or ductility in both frames and shear walls.
Analytical probabilistic vulnerability analysis requires extensive computing effort as a result of the randomness in both input motion and response characteristics. In this study, a new methodology whereby a set of vulnerability curves are derived based on the fundamental response quantities of stiffness, strength and ductility is presented. A response database of coefficients describing lognormal vulnerability relationships is constructed by employing aclosed-form solution for a generalized single-degree-of-freedom system. Once the three fundamental quantities of a wide range of structural systems are defined, the vulnerability curves for various limit states can be derived without recourse to further simulation. Examples of application are given and demonstrate the extreme efficiency of the proposed approach in deriving vulnerability relationships.
Advanced analysis and optimal design of semi-rigid space steel frames were presented. The advanced analysis can predict the combined nonlinear effects of connection, geometry, and material on the behavior and strength of semi-rigid frames. The Kishi-Chen power model was used to describe the nonlinear behavior of semi-rigid connections. Geometric nonlinearity was determined using stability functions. Material nonlinearity was determined using the Column Research Council (CRC) tangent modulus and the parabolic function. The direct search method proposed by Choi and Kim was used as optimization technique. One by one, the member with the largest unit value evaluated using the LRFD interaction equation were placed adjacent to a larger member selected from the database. The objective function was assumed to be the weight of steel frame, while the constraint functions were load-carrying capacities, deflections, inter-story drifts, and the ductility requirements. The member sizes determined using the proposed method were compared to those derived from the conventional LRFD method.

Advanced analysis can predict the combined nonlinear effects of connection, geometry, and material on the behavior and strength of semi-rigid frames. The Kishi-Chen power model was used to describe the nonlinear behavior of semi-rigid connections. Geometric nonlinearity was determined using stability functions. On the other hand, material nonlinearity was determined using the Column Research Council (CRC) tangent modulus and parabolic function. The direct search method proposed by Choi and Kim was used as optimization technique. The member with the largest unit value evaluated using the LRFD interaction equation was replaced one by one with an adjacent larger member selected from the database. The objective function was assumed as the weight of steel frame, with the constraint functions accounting for load-carrying capacities, deflections. inter-story drifts, and ductility requirement. Member sizes determined by the proposed method were compared with those derived using the conventional LRFD method.

It has been recognized that the damage control must become a more explicit design consideration. In an effort to develop design methods based on performance it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear time history analyses, monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated nonlinear influences. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) to determine the earthquake-induced demand given by the structure pushover curve. These procedures are conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and confidence of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and unloading stiffness degradation parameters. The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM is considered as practical method because the peak deformations of nonlinear system of MDF by NDSM are almost equal to the results of nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) for various ground motions. 2) When the results of NDSM are compared with those of NTHA. mean of errors is the smallest in case of post-yielding stiffness factor 0.1, static force by MAD(modal adaptive distribution) and unloading stiffness degradation factor 0.2~0.3.

The combined deckstructure-car system of a car carrier is especially sensitive to hull girder vibrations due to mechanical excitations and wave loads. For the free and forced vibration analysis of the system, the analytical methods based on the receptance method and two schemes for efficient applications of the methods are presented. The methods are especially relevant to dynamical reanalysis of the system subject to design modification or to dynamic optimization. The deck-car system is modelled as a combined system consisting of a stiffened plate representing deck, primary structure, and attached subsystems such as pillars, additional stiffeners and damped spring-mass systems representing cars/trucks. For response calculations of the system subjected to displacement excitations along the boundaries, the support displacement transfer ratio conceptually similar to the receptance is introduced. For the verification of accuracy and calculation efficiency of the proposed methods, numerical and experimental investigations are carried out.

Coupling beams have been used in bearing wall system during last decades. Practically their sectional effects are fully considered in analysis stage to control lateral displacement because they have good contribution to the stiffness of bearing wall system. But the high resultant forces of coupling beam are not fully satisfied in design stage because coupling beams are restricted in sectional size. In this paper the performance of bearing wall system with coupling beam has been evaluated based on improved equivalent linearization procedure of FEMA 440. 15 storied building is selected for analysis. Variables for performance evaluation are natural period, degree of coupling and soil site. To evaluate performance, demand capacity spectrum is calculated based on KBC 2005. As a result, for the most of the cases the life safety limit of chord rotation of coupling beam is less than the performance point of system for soil site $S_D$. That means that the coupling beam can be severly damaged before the system reaches at performance point.
In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effect of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as a fully rigid connection and as a semirigid connection. A fiber model was utilized to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and column, and a three-parameter power model was adopted for the moment-rotation angle of the semirigid connection. To evaluate the effects of higher modes on structural behavior, the structure was subjected to a KBC2005-equivalent lateral load and lateral loads considering higher modes. The structure was idealized as a separate 2D frame and as a connected 2D frame. The pushover analysis of 2D frames for the lateral load yielded the top displacement-base shear force, design coefficients such as overstrength factor, ductility ratio, and response modification coefficient, demanded ductility ratio for the semirigid connection, and distribution of plastic hinges. The sample structure showed a greater response modification coefficient than KBC2005, the higher modes were found to have few effects on the coefficient, and the lateral load of KBC2005 was found to be conservative. The TSD connection was estimated to secure economy and safety in the sample structure.
In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effects of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as fully rigid and semi-rigid. The fiber model was used to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, the power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection and the three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of the steel beam, column, and connection. The structure was idealized as separate 2-D frames and as connected 2-D frames. The peak ground accelerations of four earthquake records were modified in a time-history analysis for the levels of the mean return period and for the maximum base-shear force in a pushover analysis. The top story displacement, base-shear force, story drift, demanded ductility ratio for the semi-rigid connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were examined in the time-history analysis. The frame with the semi-rigid connection yielded a lower base-shear force, less magnitude, and increasing ratio in the bending moment of the column, beam, and connection than the frame with a fully rigid connection. The TSD connection was deemed to have secured the economy and safety of the sample structure that was subjected to seismic excitation for the Korean design level.
