  • A Seismic analysis procedure of bi-directional brideg motions is developed by using mechanical bridge model. A three-dimensional mechanical model can consider major phenomena under bi-directional seismic excitations, such as nonlinear pier motion under biaxial bending, pounding and bearing damage due to the rotaion of the superstructure, etc. The analyses utilizing the uni-directional and the bi-directional bridge model for the 3-span simply supported bridge are then performed. The seismic responses in two cases are examined and compared by investigating the relative displacements of each superstructure to both ground and adjacent superstructures and the restoring forces of RC pier. The analysis using either the uni-directional model or bi-directional model is acceptable for estimating the displacement responses of a bridge, but the bi-directional analysis is found to give more conservative results for resisting forces of RC piers. To make general conclusions, therefore, the analysis using the bi-directional bridge model should be performed in evaluating the seismic safety of bridges.

  • In this study, circular concrete column specimens confined by carbon sheet tube with different winding angles and different number of carbon sheet plies(3T, 5T and 7T) were tested to propose design equations and a strength reduction factor. Specimens were designed by 300 mm diameter and 600 mm height with $90^{\circ}{\pm}0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}{\pm}75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}{\pm}90^{\circ}$ carbon fiber angles. A 10,000 kN UTM was used for compressive strength test of specimens by displacement control method with 0.01 mm/sec velocity. Estimation equations of compressive strength and ultimate strain of circular concrete column specimens confined by carbon sheet tube using a regression analysis and a strength reduction factor to apply ultimate strength design method of concrete were proposed. The strength reduction factor(${\phi}$) of circular concrete columns confined by carbon sheet tube was estimated as 0.64 by the Monte Carlo Analysis Method. Manufacture and construction process have to be perfectly managed by construction managers because the structural capacities of carbon tubes were depends on construction abilities of manufacturing operators.

  • The repeated loading responses of four shear-critical reinforced concrete beams with two different shear span-to-depth ratios, were studied. One series of beams was reinforced using pairs of bundled stirrups with $90^{\circ}$ standard hooks, haying free end extensions of $6d_b$. The companion beams contained shear reinforcement made with larger diameter headed bars anchored with 50mm diameter circular heads. A single headed bar had the same area as a pair of bundled stirrups and hence the two series were comparable. The test results indicate that beams containing headed bar stirrups have a superior performance to companion beams containing bundled standard stirrups with improved ductility, larger energy absorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. Due to splitting of the concrete cover and local crushing, the hooks of the standard stirrups opened resulting in loss of anchorage. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by reducing the tension stiffening to account for repeated load effects.

  • T-shaped walls have different strength, stiffness and ductility in the two opposite directions parallel to the web when subjected to horizontal in-plane loads. When the flange is in tension, the extent that the flange reinforcement contributes to the flexural strength will be subjected to shear-lag effect. Because of this shear-lag effect, the flange may not participate fully in the action with the web, and the effective flange width is needed for predicting the actual strength and stiffness of structures. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effective flange width and actual strength of the T-shaped wall with Korean code specified detailing of the wall web. Three specimens were tested with cyclic lateral loading applied at top of the wall. A constant axial load of approximately 0.1f$\_$ck/$.$A$\_$g/ is maintained during the testing. Test results show that the effective flange width increases with increasing drift level, such that the entire overhanging flange of h/3 is effective at the maximum strength level. Therefore, the use of PCI or KBC(Korean Building Code) value of h/10 is unconservative with respect to detailing at the wall web boundary.

  • Anisotropic characteristics of deformation are important to understand the particular behavior in the pre-failure state of soils. Recent experiments show that cross-anisotropic moduli of granular soils can be expressed by functions of normal stresses in the corresponding directions, which is closely linked to micromechanical characteristics of particles. Granular soils are composed of a number of particles so that the force-displacement relationship at each contact point governs the macroscopic stress-strain relationship. Therefore, the micromechanical approach in which the deformation of granular soils is regarded as a mutual interaction between particle contacts is one of the best ways to investigate the anisotropic elastic deformation of soils. In this study, a numerical program based on the theory of micromechanics is developed. Generalized contact model for the irregular contact surface of soil particles is adopted to represent the force-displacement relationship in each contact point far the realistic prediction of anisotropic moduli. To evaluate the model parameters, a set of analytical solutions of anisotropic elastic moduli is derived in the isotropic stress condition. A detailed procedure to determine the model parameters is proposed with emphasis on the practical applicability of micromechanical program to analyze the elastic behavior of the granular soils.

  • Traumatic intrusion is a type of injury that involves axial displacement of a tooth toward the alveolar bone. Its occurance is relatively rare compared to other types of luxation in permanent dentition. It is more common in boys than in girls, and most common etiology of intrusion is fallen down. Various complication may occur following traumatic intrusion, such as pulp necrosis, root resorption, pulp obliteration and marginal bone loss. In addition, traumatic intrusion is commonly combined with hard or soft tissue injuries. Therefore, it is difficult to establish proper treatment plan. Choice of treatment for an intruded tooth by trauma include waiting for spontaneous re-eruption, orthodontic repositioning, and surgical repositioning. In this case, we repositioned the intruded central incisor using orthodontic traction, in a six-year old girl, which failed to re-erupt spontaneously.

  • This study focuses on the modeling of DMFC to predict the characteristics and to improve its performance. This modeling requires deep understanding of the design and operating parameters that influence on the cell potential. Furthermore, the knowledge with reference to electrochemistry, transport phenomena and fluid dynamics should be employed for the duration of mathematical description of the given process. Considering the fact that MEA is the nucleus of DMFC, special attention was made to the development of mathematical model of MEA. Multiscale modeling is comprised of process modeling as well as a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The CFD packages and process simulation tools are used in simulating the steady-state process. The process simulation tool calculates theelectrochemical kinetics as well as the change of fractions, and at the same time, CFD calculates various balance equations. The integrated simulation with multiscal modeling explains experimental observations of transparent DMFC.

  • The design and implementation of planar Active Phased Array Antenna System are described in this paper. This Antenna system operates at X-band with its bandwidth 10 % and dual polarization is realized using dual slot feeding microstrip patch antenna and SPDT(Single Pole Double Through) switch. Array Structure is $16\times16$ triangular lattice structure and each array is composed of TR(Transmit & Receive) module with more than 40 dBm power. Each TR module includes digital attenuator and phase shifter so that antenna beam can be electronically steered over a scan angle$({\pm}60^{\circ})$. Measurement of antenna pattern is conducted using a near field chamber and the results coincide with the expected beam pattern. From these results, it can be convinced that this antenna can be used with control of beam steering and beam shaping.

  • In the present study, details of the TSC beam-to-PSRC column connection for low and middle seismic zones were developed. For ease construction, the top and bottom flanges of the steel section of the TSC beam were discontinuous at the joint face on purpose, while the web passes through the joint. Thus, tensile resistance of the top and bottom flanges is not considered in the calculation of nominal strength of the connection. Cyclic loading tests on two interior connections and an exterior connection were performed to verify the seismic performance. The test parameter for two interior connections was the depth of the TSC beams: 600 and 700 mm including the slab depth. The test results showed that the nominal strength of the connections predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The connection specimens exhibited relatively good deformation and energy dissipation capacities, greater than the requirements for the ordinary and intermediate moment frames. Ultimately, the connection specimens were failed at the story drift ratios of 3.0 to 4.0 % due to local buckling and tensile fracture of the web of the TSC beam passing through the joint. By modifying the existing provisions of ASCE, the joint shear strength of the TSC beam-PSRC column connection was evaluated.

  • A geotechnical research including observation of the movement of wall-structure, monitoring of groundwater, non-destructive geophysical investigation was conducted to workout a countermeasure to conserve the Muryong Royal Tomb which is the most extinguishable cultural property of the Baekje dynasty. Movement of the structure of Muryong Royal Tomb generally arises to the front chamber and its amplitude in a rainy season is twice of that in the dry season. It represents serious problem concerned about structural safety of the royal tomb in the rainy season. Movement of wall-structure is caused due to the rain infiltration through cracks in the quicklime layer within the soil mound on the top of the royal tomb and the change of the temperature inside of the tomb. Cracks found around the Muryong Royal Tomb are mostly spread in NW and SE of the tomb structure and it harmonizes with the direction of movement of wall-structure of the Muryong Royal Tomb. Counter-plans for safety and prevention of water-leakage that obstruct the movement of wall structures towards the direction of south are very important for the conservation of Muryong Royal Tomb. After getting rid of the cause of structural change by the restoration of the front chamber of the Muryong Royal Tomb, it needs to reinforce the quicklime layer for prevention of waterleak.
