Internal lathe machining with a boring bar is weak with respect to vibration because the bar is long and slender. Therefore, it is important to study the dynamic characteristics of a boring bar. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of overhang and cutting conditions on the dynamic response characteristics of a boring bar. For an efficient experiment, an $L_g(3^3)$ orthogonal array was applied and the results were quantitatively analyzed by ANOVA. Overhang, feed per revolution, and depth of cut were selected as independent variables. Meanwhile, dynamic stiffness, damping ratio, damping coefficient, and acceleration were chosen as dependent variables. The vibration signal was obtained from an accelerometer attached to the boring bar, followed by visualization by a signal analyzer. The effect of overhang was found to have a significant effect on the dynamic stiffness, damping ratio, and damping coefficient, but the other variables did not. As the length of the overhang increased, the dynamic stiffness decreased and the damping ratio increased. In addition, the damping coefficient increased until the length of the overhang was 4D (where D is the shank diameter), after which it remained constant. The acceleration decreased until the overhang length was 4D, and then increased sharply when the overhang was increased further. From these results, the behavioral trend of the damping characteristics changed when its overhang length was 4D. Consequently, there is a critical point that the dynamic characteristics of boring bar change.

Phytoplankton community composition was investigated in the Asan Bay (South) Korea. Water samples were collected monthly from five stations during January to December 2008. Phytoplankton blooms were observed in February and in August but the location of the bloom varied with the sampling time. A total of 134 phytoplankton species from seven classes (Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae, Euglenophyceae) were observed. Diatoms were dominant in all stations through-out the year except in summer when dinoflagellates were numerous and highly distributed within the outer bay rather than in the river mouth. Dominant and subdominant species were composed mostly of diatoms but were replaced by dinoflagellates in June and July. Results of ecological index showed that the diversity indices were increasing toward outer bay but the dominance indices showed a reverse trend.

As the ambient vibration test (AVT) of railway bridges has a limited range of speed, it has a limitation in examining the dynamic behavior of bridges accordingto speed. Thus, in order to analyze the correlation between the speed of a train passing over a bridge and the bridge's dynamic response, we conducted a speed-increasing experiment using a real diesel locomotive. To analyze the acceleration response characteristics, we attached seven vertical accelerometers at equal intervals throughout the entire section of the bridge except the supports, and one horizontal accelerometer to the middle span. Linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) were installed at the bridge's center in both vertical and horizontal directions to investigate the vertical and horizontal behaviors. The test train was statically loaded at the center and at the end of the bridge. And its speed was increased from 5 km/h to 90 km/h. With data obtained from the experiment, the vibration level was evaluated in each direction by the filtering frequency, and the level of horizontal vibration was examined in comparison with vertical vibration. The displacement and wheel load variation was analyzed by speed.

This study investigates how Eurasian snow cover in spring (March and April) is associated with Korean temperature during summer (June-July-August). Two leading modes of Eurasian snow cover variability in spring for 1979~2015 are obtained by Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. The first EOF mode of Eurasian snow cover is characterized by a zonally elongated pattern over the whole Eurasian region and its principal component is more correlated with Korean temperature during June. On the other hand, the second EOF mode of Eurasian snow cover is characterized by an east-west dipole-like pattern, showing positive anomalies over eastern Eurasian region and negative anomalies over western Eurasian region. This dipole-like pattern is related with Korean temperature during August. The first leading mode of Eurasian snow cover is associated with anomalous high (low) pressure over Korea (Sea of Okhotsk) during June, which might be induced by much evaporation of soil moisture in Eurasia during March. On the other hand, the second mode of Eurasian snow cover is associated with a wave train resembling with Eurasian (EU)-like pattern in relation to the Atlantic sea surface temperature forcing, leading to the anomalous high pressure over Korea during August. Understanding these two leading modes of snow cover in Eurasian continent in spring may contribute to predict Korean summer temperature.

Air compressor, as an essential equipment used in the factory and plant operations, accounts for around 30% of the total electricity consumption in U.S.A, thereby being proposed advanced technologies to reduce electricity consumption. When the fluctuation of the compressed airflow rate is small, the system stability is increased followed by the reduction of the electricity consumption which results in the efficient design of the energy system. In the statistical analysis, the normal distribution, log normal distribution, gamma distribution or the like are generally used to identify system characteristics. However a single distribution may not fit well the data with long tail, representing sudden air flow rate especially in extremes. In this paper, authors decouple the compressed airflow rate into two parts to present a mixture of distribution function and suggest a method to reduce the electricity consumption. This reduction stems from the fact that a general pareto distribution estimates more accurate quantile value than a gaussian distribution when an airflow rate exceeds over a large number.

In view of the frequent start-ups and load changes in the recent past, there is a need for fossil-fuel power plants to be more efficient and reliable for long-term operation. Under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, severe creep and fatigue damages can occur in major plant facilities, particularly, turbines and boilers. For highly stable operation and better maintenance, various techniques that facilitate a systematic assessment of the service life of critical facilities have been developed. However, to date, in Korea, to evaluate the remaining life of major facilities of fossil power plant, qualitative or semiquantitative analyses are carried out without following any standard guidelines or procedure. In this study, a standard code for assessing the remaining life of major plant facilities is proposed. This code takes into account creep and fatigue damage, which are generally accepted as dominant causes of damage to facilities. KEPIC (Korea Electric Power Industry code) is scheduled to include this guideline in 2010.
A dynamic model, which combined time series model with distributed-lag model, is applied to understand the relationship between rainfall and groundwater level. In the model, rainfall with distribution lags and past groundwater level as a dependent variables were used to estimate present groundwater level. The distribution of the lagged rainfall effects for groundwater levels was modeled by Almon polynomials. The model was applied to Banglim and Tanbu groundwater stations in Pyungchang river and Bocheong stream watershed which are representative basins for International Hydrological Program (IHP). The dynamic model represents observed groundwater levels very well and can be used to predict the levels. The model parameters reflect hydraulic characteristics of aquifer. In addition, from the parameters it appears that the increase in groundwater level due to rainfall takes place significantly within first two days of the rainfall event. The rainfall of the order of 18mm/day and 30mm/day at Banglim and Tanbu, respectively, had no significant effect on the groundwater levels.
This study proposed a new drought index considering the accumulative pattern of daily rainfall, i.e., Rainfall Accumulation Drought Index (RADI). The RADI can be easily calculated at daily scale by comparing the long-term averaged cumulative rainfall to the observed cumulative rainfall for a specific duration. This study evaluated the availability of the RADI in the field of monitoring short-term and long-term droughts by investigating the spatial and temporal variability and the recurrence cycle of drought in South Korea. To present the short-term and long-term droughts, the various SPIs with different durations should be used in practice. However, the RADI can present and monitor both short-term and long-term droughts as a single index. By investigating the national average of the RADI, specific drought patterns of 20-year cycle were identified in this study. This study also proposed a five-level drought classification considering occurrence probability that would be a suitable alternative as a drought criterion for drought forecast/response.

Broadband code division multiple access(B-CDMA)previously proposed for personal communication services(PCS) is not suitable for high-speed data services with large variations in speed, because it is designed only for low-speed voice calls with small variations in speed. Meanwhile, hybrid intra-cell TDMA/inter-cell CDMA(Hybrid TDMA/CDMA) recently proposed could accomodate high-speed services easily because of its internal use of the TDMA scheme, but there would be much inefficiency in treating variable bit rate services due to the intrinsic properties of TDMA transmission scheme, In this paper, a media access control(MAC) protocol, called Resevation TDMA/CDMA, which uses a reservation scheme similar to the one in the packet reservation multiple access(PRMA) protocol to compensate for these shortcomings is proposed. In addition, the performance of this protocol is analyzed and compared with conventional protocols by computer simulation. According to the simulation results, it has been shown that the proposed Reservation TDMA/CDMA scheme could support various transmission rates of user data traffics easily, and it could utilize the variations of the treansmission rates in each active call more efficiently.
Analyzing the results of East Sea Regional Ocean Model using a 3-dimensional variational data assimilation scheme, we investigated spatial and temporal variability of the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) in the East Sea. The climatological monthly mean transport of the NKCC clearly shows seasonal variation of the NKCC within the range of about 0.35 Sv ($=0^6m^3/s$), which increases from its minimum (about 0.45 Sv) through December-January to March, decreases during March and May, and then increases again to the maximum (about 0.8 Sv) in August-September. The volume transport of the NKCC shows interannual variation of the NKCC with the range of about 1.0 Sv that is larger than seasonal variation. The southward current of the NKCC appears often not only in summer but in winter as well. The width of the NKCC is about 35 km near the Korean coast and its core is located under the East Korea Warm Current. The North Korean Cold Water (NKCW), characterized by low salinity and low temperature, is located both under the Tsushima Warm Water and in the western side of the maximum southward current of the NKCC that means the NKCC advects the NKCW southward along the Korean coast. It is revealed that the intermediate low salinity water, formed off the Vladivostok in winter, flows southward to the south of $37^{\circ}N$ through $2{\sim}3$ paths; one path along the Korean coast, another one along $132^{\circ}E$, and the middle path along $130^{\circ}E$. The path of the intermediate low salinity varies with years. The reanalysis fields suggest that the NKCW is advected through the paths along the Korean coast and along $130^{\circ}E$.
