  • A comparative research on the traditional standard wood walls and other light-frame wood walls is necessary to expand the base of wooden buildings and improve consumer satisfaction. Therefore, in this research we looked for new possibilities through comparison of performance between standard wood wall and newly presented staggered stud wood wall. First, the strength characteristics of staggered stud wood walls were evaluated and the those of standard wood walls were compared. The ultimate load of the standard wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall, because the cross section of the wood making up the standard wood wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall. However, the statistical analysis between the two groups didn't showed a significance of 95% confidence level. This means that, staggered stud wood walls have shown the possibility of replacing the standard wood wall. Because the cross-section of the stud in the staggered stud wood walls is smaller than that of the standard wall, the material can be saved. Therefore, staggerd wood stud wall is judged to be more economical than the standard wall. In addition, since the area of the insulation also increases, improvement of the heat bridge is also expected.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a precast concrete structural wall system that can assure reliable seismic performance. In previous studies, the connections of precast concrete structural walls have had some problems in their seismic performance. Therefore, this research proposes precast concrete structural walls which have an improved seismic performance. One is a hybrid precast concrete structural wall that is composed of a reinforced concrete component and a precast concrete component, and another is a precast concrete wall whose reinforcements have a partially reduced section and are partially unbonded from the surrounding concrete. To evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed precast concrete structural walls, the behavior of three specimens, including a reinforced concrete wall, were subjected to reversed cyclic combined flexure and shear. According to the test results, the proposed precast concrete structural walls have reliable seismic performance.

  • The changes in earth pressure and ground settlement due to the underground excavation nearby the existing retaining wall according to the separation distance between underground excavation and retaining wall, were studied experimentally. A soil tank having 160 cm in length and 120 cm in height, was manufactured to simulate the underground excavation like tunnel by using 5 separated bottom walls. The variation of earth pressure was measured according to the excavation stages by using 10 separated right walls simulating the retaining wall. The results showed that the earth pressure was changed by the lowering of first bottom wall(B1), however the earth pressure was not changed significantly by the lowering of third bottom wall(B3) since B3 had sufficient separation distance from retaining wall. Lowering of first bottom wall(B1) induced the decrease of earth pressure in lower part of retaining wall, on the contrary, lowering of first bottom wall(B1) induced the increase of earth pressure in middle part of retaining wall proving the arching effect.

  • Test bed additional wall combined with PHC-W pile retaining wall has been constructed. To determine the dimensions of test bed additional wall, bending and shear tests of full scale core members of additional wall were tested. Basement additional walls utilizing PHC-W pile retaining wall, which were developed by modifying the cross-section of PHC piles, were classified into the composite additional wall and the non-composite additional wall. Their tests were conducted to obtain bending strength and shear strength of basement additional walls ultilizing PHC-W pile retaining wall. Since bending strengths and shear strengths of the composite additional wall and the non-composite additional wall were similar, it could be confirmed that the non-composite additional wall could be applied instead of the composite additional wall. Full-scale model additional wall was 200 mm thick, thus the thickness of additional wall combined with PHC-W pile retaining wall could be reduced by 100~200 mm.

  • Reinforced concrete(RC) structural walls are major lateral load-resisting structural member in building structures. Generally these RC structural walls are coupled with each other by the coupling beams and slabs, and therefore they behave as RC coupled structural wall system. In the design of these coupled structural wall systems, member forces are calculated using elastic structural analysis. These elastic analysis methodologies for the design of coupled structural wall system was not reasonable because it can not consider their ultimate behavior and assure economic feasibility. Performance based design and moment redistribution method to solve these problems is regarded as a reasonable alternative design method for RC coupled structural wall system. However, it is not verified under various design parameters. In this study, nonlinear analysis of RC coupled structural wall system was performed according to various design parameters such as reinforcement ratio, ultimate concrete strain and wall height. Based on analysis results, design considerations for coupled RC structural wall system was proposed.

  • The shear wall with openings built with reinforced concrete(RC) have been elaborately studied by many researchers, whereas the steel plate concrete(SC) wall structure has not been investigated as much. Recent SC wall structures developed in Korea have been partly applied to nuclear power plant structures, although its design specification or guideline for the SC wall structure with openings has not been completed yet. This study based on the account for the area lost to openings evaluates the effects of opening on the structural capacity of the SC structure within nuclear power plant. The results obtained from the study on the area lost to openings have been compared with experimental and numerical studies.

  • The purpose of this study was reducing the moisture accumulation in a wall, which can threaten the structural safety of light-frame wall and make residential environment poor. For the purpose, the laboratory test was carried out with different wall assemblies. Vapor retarder and air gap for ventilation were added to the typical wall. The improved performance of the proposed walls was examined through the test with distinct difference of temperature and relative humidity between outdoor and indoor air conditions. Increased dampproofing performance of additional vapor retarder was effective on reduction of moisture transmission from inside the house into the wall. However, unexpected high relative humidity was shown in the wall with two additional vapor retarder because of excessive dampproofing performance or inadequate location of vapor retarder. And, the open air gap induced the moisture transfer from inside the wall into outdoor air by ventilation. If the alternative to the induction of moisture transmission from inside the house into the wall with open air gap can be found, moisture reduction effect of that will be increased obviously.

  • The purpose of this study was finding out proper wall assembly to reduce moisture accumulation in light frame wall under outdoor air conditions. For the purpose, moisture transfer and accumulation in a wall were evaluated for five types of wall assembly; typical wall (T), addition of a vapor retarder (P1), addition of two vapor retarders (P2), addition of an open air gap for ventilation behind the siding (P3), and shift of vapor retarder with proposed wall 'P3' (P4). The moisture transfer and accumulation in the all walls were evaluated after applying the typical and proposed walls to the field test house. Performances of the typical and proposed walls were compared according to the season. Rank for effective wall on reducing moisture accumulation in wall was 1) shift of vapor ratarder and addition of open air gap (P4), 2) addition of vapor retarder (P1), 3) typical wall (T), 4) addition of open air gap (P3), and 5) the other (P2).
