  • Active earth pressure formula, which can consider the effects of ground surface inclination, inclination of inside retaining wall face, wall friction, line load, uniform load, soil cohesion and adhesion, was derived based on the force equilibrium principle. In order to verify the accuracy of this proposed formula, the calculated active earth pressures by the proposed formula were compared with those of graphical solutions. Also, the active earth pressures determined by the proposed formula were compared with those by Coulomb's, Rankine's and Mazindrani's solution under specific conditions. The results matched quite well not only with the graphical solutions but also with those by three other methods. Also, the trend of active earth pressures by the proposed formula were corresponded with results of experimental study by Fang, et al. It can be concluded that this generalized formula not only can overcome the limitations of Rankine's, Coulomb's and Mazindrani's active earth pressure formula but also can consider the external loading conditions.

  • During cold operation period, fuel injection system directly contributes the unburned hydrocarbon formation in spark ignition engines. The relationship between injection parameters and HC emission behavior was investigated through a series of experiments. Spray behavior of port fuel injectors was characterized through a quantitative evaluation of mass concentration of liquid fuel by a patternator and PDA. 6-hole injector was found to produce finer spray than single hole one. Using a purpose-built test rig, the wall wetting fuel was measured, which was mostly affected by wall temperature. Varying coolant temperature($20{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), HC emissions were measured in a production engine. With respect to the different types of injectors, HC emission was also measured. In the 6-hole injector application, the engine produced less HC emission in low coolant temperature region. Though it produces much more amount of wetting fuel, it has the advantages of finer atomization quality. In high coolant temperature region, there was little effect between different types of injectors. The control schemes to reduce HC emissions during cold start could be suggested from the findings that the amount of fuel supply and HC emission could be reduced by utilizing fine spray and high intake wall temperature.

  • A series of model tests were conducted in order to observe the failure surface generated around a diaphragm wall embedded in ground with high groundwater table. Images of the soil deformation around the model wall were captured during the test. The configuration of the failure surface in soil around the model wall could be obtained from analyzing the image of the soil deformation. Based on the configuration of the failure surface observed in the model test, an analytical approach was proposed to predict the uplift capacity of a diaphragm wall installed in ground. The analytical approach considers not only the wall properties such as length, thickness and surface roughness of diaphragm walls but also the soil strength properties such as the internal friction angle and the cohesion of soil. The predicted uplift capacity of a diaphragm wall shows a good agreement with the experimental one measured in the model test.

  • Since tunnels are linear type structures that have a long extent in comparison to their excavation or inner section, tunnels must be constructed in various ground conditions. In this study, laboratory model tests and theoretical analysis on a tunnel loads are carried out in the unconsolidated ground with inclined layers for tunnel excavation. Laboratory model tests are performed with the variation in the angle of the inclined layers and tunnel depth for the model ground with inclined layers. As for the ground materials, two dimensional model ground is prepared with aluminum rods and blocks with no cohesion, which are frictional resistance free between testing apparatus walls and ground materials, by establishing the ground materials self-supporting. Moreover tunnel load equation are newly induced so that comparisons between model test results and the theoretical results are conducted as well.

  • Since weathering weakens the rock fabric and exaggerates any structural weakness, it affects mechanical properties as well as physical and chemical properties of rock. Weathering leads to a decrease in density, strength, friction angle and cohesion, and subsequently it affects negatively on the stability of rock slope. The purpose of the study is to investigate the changes of the rock slope stability caused by discontinuities which have different weathering grades. For that, the discontinuity samples which are divided into two different weathering grades are obtained from the field and tested their mechanical properties such as JCS, JRC and residual friction angle. In order to evaluate the effects on the stability of slope due to weathering, the deterministic analysis is carried out. That is, the factors of safety for planar failure are calculated for rock masses which have two different weathering grades, such as fresh and weathered rock mass. However, since the JRC and friction angle values are widely scattered and the deterministic analysis cannot consider the variation, the factors of safety cannot represent properly the stability of the rock slope. Therefore, the probabilistic analysis has been used to consider the scattered values. In the deterministic analysis, the factors of safety for the fresh discontinuity and weathered discontinuity are 1.25 and 1.0, respectively. The results indicate the fresh discontinuities are stable for planar failure and the weathered discontinuities are marginally stable. However, the probabilities of failure for the fresh discontinuity and weathered discontinuity are 25.6% and 45.9%, respectively. This shows that both discontinuities are analyzed as unstable in the probabilistic analysis.
