  • The nematodes associated with rice in Korea were investigated at 1,160 rice paddies in 387 localities during the last 3 years since 1985. As the result, 35 nematode species were found associated with rice in Korea. Among them 26 species were newly reported from rice in Korea; and 15 species, Criconemoides informis, Criconemella paragoodeyi, Criconema (Criconema) jaejuense, Ditylenchus longicauda, Eutylenchus africanus, Merlinius n. sp., Meiodorus n. sp., Ogma(Homogma) serrata, Ogma(Homogma) insulicum, Orientylus orientalis, Paratylenchus lepidus, Pararotylenchus pini, Triversus n. sp., Tylenchorhynchus clavicaudatus, Tylenchorhynchus nudus were firstly added for the world as associated with rice. Criconemella paragoodeyi, Merlinius n. sp., and Ditylenchus longicauda were distributed all over the country with high population density, and expected as potentially important rice parasitic nematodes. Hirschmanniella imamuri was distributed all over the country with high population density. Hirschmanniella oryzae was also distributed along with Hirschmanniella imamuri in the southern part of the country, but gradully disapeared as it goes to the northern part.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hot water immersion treatment on the control of white tip nematode (Aphelenchoides besseyi) in rice seeds. Disease incidence and yield losses induced by white tip nematode were alos investigated in association with resistance of various rice cultivars. The hot water immersion treatment of rice seeds at $61^{\circ}C$ for 10-15 minutes was effective for the control of the white tip nematode. The stem of most Japonica-type cultivars was damaged by white tip nematode. The Tongil-type cultivars, however, were not infected by the nematode at all. Diseas incidence of Japonica-type cultivars, Odaebyeo and Bogkwangbyeo were 95.6% and 81.8%, respectively. The number of nematodes in infected rice seeds of both Japonica-type and Togil-type cultivars was over 100 per 10gr rice seeds. Although Tongil-type cultivars didn't show white tip symptoms, the yield loss was found in many cultivars. The yield was reduced by 40% Japonica-type cultivars, Odaebyeo and Bogkwangbyeo that were infected by white tip nematode. The yield loss in Japonica-type cultivars was more severe than that in Tongil-type cultiveas. The resistance of Youngdege 5 was highest than any other cultivars showing no disease symptoms and yield loss.

  • White tip nematode damage to rice was surveyed at 111 $My{\check{o}}n$ from 36 Gun in Kyongsangnam-Do, $Ky{\check{o}}ngsangbuk-Do\;and\;Ch{\check{o}}llanam-Do$. Rate of damaged stem by the nematode was highest at $Ch'angny{\check{o}}ng-Gun\;in\;Ky{\check{o}}ngsangnam-Do$ as 28.3%, $Y{\check{o}}ngch'on-Gun\;in\;Ky{\check{o}}ngsangbuk-Do$ as 69.3% and $Pos{\check{o}}ng-Gun\;in\;Ch{\check{o}}llanam-Do$ as 40.6%. In pot experiment, no white tip symptoms were appeared in Tongil hybrids except $W{\check{o}}np'ung$ by 3.4% but a great number of the nematode was detected in seeds while symptom and a fair amount of the nematode were observed in Japonica cultivars. The number of nematode in Shingwang cultivar of Tongil hybrids and Dongin cultivar of Japonica was highest by 1997, by 1023 individuals per 10g of seed respectively. Detection rate of the nematode was different depended upon peeling of the husks. Less than 50% was detected from unhulling seed compared with hulled seed except 8 cultivars such as $Shins{\check{o}}nchal$, Hangangchal, $S{\check{o}}gwang,\;Y{\check{o}}ngpung$, Milyang 23, $Such{\check{o}}ng,\;Taech'{\check{o}}ng\;and\;S{\check{o}}nam$. More effective detection was oftained with temperature level at $25^{\circ}C$ and increased with immersing time regardless of peeling the husks.
