  • This study is focused on mediating effect of academic motivation between the educational environmental factors on Self-determination Theory and Reward and Punishment Mark System. For the purpose of this study, a questionnaire survey uses a scale being developed through the educational environmental factors on self-determination, academic motivation, and academic achievement. The survey was conducted among 202 students in middle and high school in Seoul. First, autonomy of variables of educational environment based on self-determination theory has influenced on internal and external academic motivation, confidence makes internal and reasonable motivation high, and relationship makes demotivation low. Second, Reward and Punishment Mark System which has recently been replaced traditional punishment doesn't have influenced on academic motivation of students. Third, internal motivation has positively influenced on willingness to take classes and academic achievement analyzing the effect of academic motivation sub-factors on academic achievement. Therefore, this study suggests that autonomy, confidence, and relationship in self-determination theory make academic motivation and willingness to take classes high.

  • The ministry of Environment of Korea initiated two follow-up surveys in 2005 and 2006 to investigate environmental effect on children's health. These two cohorts, referred to as the 2005 Cohort and 2006 Cohort, were followed up three times every two years. This data set was referred to as the Children's Health and Environmental Research (CHEER) data set. This paper reproduces the existing research results of Kim et al. (Journal of the Korean Data and Information Science Society, 25, 987-998, 2014) and Lee et al. (The Korean Journal of Applied Statistics, 29, 1295-1310, 2016) and derive a benchmark dose lower limit (BMDL) for blood lead level for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) after pooling two cohort data sets. The different ADHD rating scales were unified by applying the conversion formula proposed by Lee et al. (2016). The random effect model and AR(1) model were built to reflect the longitudinal characteristics and regression to the mean phenomenon. Based on these models the BMDLs for blood lead levels were derived using the BMDL formula and the simulation. We obtained a hight level of BMDLs when we pooled two independent cohort data sets.

  • The proportional-integral-derivative(PID) controller has been widely used in the industry because of its robust performance and simple structure in a wide range of operating conditions. However, the AVR(Automatic Voltage Regulator) as a control system is not robust to variations of the power system parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to use PID controller to increase the stability and performance of the AVR system. In this paper, a novel design method for determining the optimal PID controller parameters of an AVR system using the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm is presented. The proposed approach has superior features, including easy implementation, stable convergence characteristic and good computational efficiency. In order to assist estimating the performance of the proposed PSO-PID controller, a new performance criterion function is also defined. This evaluation function is intended to reflect when the maximum percentage overshoot, the settling time are given as design specifications. The ITAE evaluation function should impose a penalty if the design specifications are violated, so that the PSO algorithm satisfies the specifications when searching for the PID controller parameter. Finally, through the computer simulations, the proposed PSO-PID controller not only satisfies the given design specifications for the terminal voltage step response, but also shows better control performance than other similar recent studies.

  • In genetic association studies with high-dimensional genomic data, regularization procedures based on penalized likelihood are often applied to identify genes or genetic regions associated with diseases or traits. A network-based regularization procedure can utilize biological network information (such as genetic pathways and signaling pathways in genetic association studies) with an outstanding selection performance over other regularization procedures such as lasso and elastic-net. However, network-based regularization has a limitation because cannot be applied to high-dimension genomic data with a group structure. In this article, we propose to combine data dimension reduction techniques such as principal component analysis and a partial least square into network-based regularization for the analysis of high-dimensional genomic data with a group structure. The selection performance of the proposed method was evaluated by extensive simulation studies. The proposed method was also applied to real DNA methylation data generated from Illumina Innium HumanMethylation27K BeadChip, where methylation beta values of around 20,000 CpG sites over 12,770 genes were compared between 123 ovarian cancer patients and 152 healthy controls. This analysis was also able to indicate a few cancer-related genes.

  • The Korean Ministry of Agricultural & Forestry(MAF) has designated some model areas and has supported financially to encourage sustainable farming under the environment-friendly agriculture rearing project(EARP) since 1995. This study was conducted to diagnose the project and to find ways to improve the effectiveness of EARP. The 18 areas (823 ha) such as Gyeonggi-Do, Gangwon-Do, Chungcheongbuk-Do, Chungcheongnam-Do, and Jeju-Do of 32 areas under EARP in 2004 were examined. Most of the practices implemented in EARP areas were not practical for sustainable agriculture except some equipments and facilities. It was thought that practical technologies for sustainable agriculture were more essential than equipments and facilities to improve the effectiveness of EARP. And area-specific technologies are needed to decrease environmental pollution. For example, liquefied slurry application and duck-rice farming in paddy fields near a watershed could increase the possibility of water pollution by nutrient outflow. Soil characteristics were important factors that could affect the effect of practices on environment conservation. Woodchip application and subsoil crash were not effective in coarse-textured soils. It was recommended that every practices under EARP should be re-examined in the light of the effects on environment before implementation and be evaluated by experts after completion.

  • This study aims to suggest ways to improve sustainability on housing complexes. This study sampled eight housing projects in Seoul and GyeongGi-Do in Korea, which were completed in June 2007 and June 2008. Then, are retention and maintenance on "constructed greens for ecological environment" including "green structures substitutes retaining walls", "green roofs", and "green walls." Study methods are field investigations of the sampled sites, and Post Occupancy Analysis. Major findings were; 1) "constructed greens" are not well retained in more sites and and this implies the GBCS(Green Building Certification System) does not meet its objectives well, 2) User showed lower user satisfaction to "constructed greens". User satisfaction concerning "green structures substitute retaining walls" was higher than the satisfaction on the other constructed green type. Satisfaction Assessment Criteria lower 1han average were "level of quality", "meet the design objectives", "vegetation management status", "vegetation maintenance". 3) User satisfaction was strongly correlated on the level of quality factor of "constructed green". In addition, tue other factors are the significant correlations between the satisfactions. The present GBCS has inadequate assessment standards for maintenance, which lead to lower the entire satisfaction. Therefore, periodic recertification system, education and information providing for the managing personals, and incentives for good maintenance or disincentive for poor maintenance of the "constructed greens" are suggested to improve the GBCS.

  • This study aimed to develop and validate the Classroom Problem Behavior Scale - Elementary School Version (CPBS-E) measure which is unique to classroom problem behavior exhibited by Korean elementary school students. The focus was on developing a universal screening instrument designed to identify and provide intervention to students who are at-risk for severe social-emotional and behavioral problems. Items were initially drawn from the literature, interviews with elementary school teachers, common office discipline referral measures used in U.S. elementary schools, penalty point systems used in Korean schools, 'Green Mileage', and the Inventory of Emotional and Behavioral Traits. The content validity of the initially developed items was assessed by six classroom and subject teachers, which resulted in the development of a preliminary scale consisting of 63 two-dimensional items (i.e., Within Classroom Problem Behavior and Outside of Classroom Problem Behavior), each of which consisted of 3 to 4 factors. The Within Classroom Problem Behavior dimension consisted of 4 subscales (not being prepared for class, class disruption, aggression, and withdrawn) and the Outside of Classroom Problem Behavior dimension consisted of 3 subscales (rule-violation, aggression, and withdrawn). The CPBS-E was pilot tested on a sample of 154 elementary school students, which resulted in reducing the scale to 23 items. Following the scale revision, the CPBS-E was validated on a sample population of 209 elementary school students. The validation results indicated that the two-dimensional CPBS-E scale of classroom problem behavior was a reliable and valid measure. The test-retest reliability was stable at above .80 in most of the subscales. The CPBS-E measure demonstrated high internal consistency of .76-.94. In examining the criterion validity, the scale's correlation with the Teacher Observation of Classroom Adaptation-Checklist (TOCA-C) was high and the aggression and withdrawn subscales of the CPBS-E demonstrated high correlations with externalization and internalization, respectively, of the Child Behavior Checklist - Teacher Report Form CBCL-TRF). In addition, the factor structure of the CPBS-E scale was examined using the structural equation model and found to be acceptable. The results are discussed in relation to implications, contributions to the field, and limitations.
