  • As increasing demand for precise machining in advanced disciplines, especially in semi-conductor, aeronautical and automotive industries, the magnetic abrasive deburring(MAD) which is able to eliminate micro-sized burr on complex surface in less time has drawn the attention in the last decades. However, the performance of MAD is subject to shape and size of a tool. Therefore, this study aim to identify deburring behavior of MAD in U-type flow channel by measuring the length rate of burr removal in radial distance of the cylindrical tool under four process factors. In order to evaluate the deburring effect of MAD on the surface, finishing regions are divided based on center of the circular cutting tool. As a results, it was defined that the amount of burr removal in a downward direction moving toward flow channel from the top surface was higher than upward direction. This is because the magnetic abrasives were detached from magnetic lines of force due to geometrical shape.

  • In orthogonal cutting a new approach for modeling of burr formation process when tool exits workpiece is proposed. The approach is based on the rigid-plastic FEM combined with the ductile fracture criterion and the element kill method. The approach is applied to simulate a plane strain cutting process. The results of the FEM are compared with those of the experiment. It is shown that the fracture location and fracture angle as well as cutting force can be predicted using the proposed approach with a good correlation to experimental results.

  • The machining technology for the removal of micro-burr has been demanded because electrode parts of electron gun have minute holes. In this study, Magnetic Assisted Polishing(MAP) is applied to remove the micro-burr instead of the contentional polishing process such as the etching and barrel. Optimal polishing conditions are selected from many experiments using the tool of the flat end slit type. On the basis of experimental results, the deburring machine for the Magnetic Assisted Polishing of electrode part is developed and its performance is evaluated.

  • The objective of this study is to propose a new approach for modelling of burr formation process during orthogonal cutting when the tool exits the workpiece. This approach is based on the rigid-plastic finite element method combined with the ductile fracture criterion and the element kill method. This approach is applied to orthogonal cutting process to predict the fracture location and the fracture angle as well as the cutting force. To validate this approach, orthogonal cutting tests inside SEM(scanning electron microscope) at very low speed are carried out using A16061-T6 to observe the behavior of the material during the chip and the burr formation. The results of the experiment are compared with those of the finite element simulation.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of micro-burr formation in the cross hatch and deburring in honed surfaces. Two types of micro-burrs formed in the cross hatch were defined as upper edge burr (type A) and side edge burr (type B). The size of micro-burrs were measured for the honed surfaces of several cross hatch angle. Deburring mechanism and system using magneto-electrolytic process including the abrasive pad for mechanic deburring effects together were introduced. Deburring experiments and analysis were carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the deburring process.

  • Magnetic abrasive polishing is an advanced deburring process for nonmagnetic materials and micropattern products that have non-machinability characteristics. Despite these advantages, there are some problems with using MAP for deburring. MAP has introduced geometric errors into microgrooves because of an over-cutting force caused by uncontrolled magnetic abrasives in the MAP tool. Thus, in this study, to solve this problem, an EP (electrolyte polishing)-MAP hybrid polishing process was developed for deburring microgrooves in an STS316 material. In addition, an evaluation of EP-MAP for the deburring of microgrooves was carried out by profiling the burrs. The results of the experiment showed geometric errors after the deburring process using MAP. However, in the case of EP-MAP, no geometric error was observed after the process because of the lower material removal rate in EP-MAP.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of rebonded ceramic brackets according to each condition and find an appropriate method to rebond ceramic brackets with proper shear bond strength in clinical practice. Methods: The study consisted of 12 experimental groups, according to the types of brackets, debonding methods, and treatment methods of the bracket base. Shear bond strength was measured, and adhesive residues left on the tooth surface were assessed. The base of the bracket was examined under scanning electron microscopy. Results: The shear bond strength of the monocrystalline ceramic bracket group was significantly higher than thatof the polycrystalline bracket group with only sandblasting (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in shear bond strength between groups that used rebonded brackets which were debonded with shear force and debonded with laser (p > 0.05). The shear bond strength of the sandblasted/silane group was significantly higher than that of the selectively grinded group with a low-speed round bur and the sandblasted only group (p < 0.001). The retentive structure was more presented in groups where laser was applied than in groups where shear force was applied to debond brackets prior to rebonding. The bracket bases which were treated before rebonding presented smoother surfaces than new brackets. Conclusions: Shear bond strength could be increased by applying a silane coupling agent after sandblasting before rebonding. Also, the bond strength of the selectively grinded group with a low-speed round bur and the sandblasted group showed acceptable bond strength for clinical orthodontic treatment.

  • In this study, a vision system with image processing method have been introduced to find the edge radius of curvature. It was applied to inspect the edge quality of the deburring process product with brush grinding. Size of data was found to be critical in calculating the radius of curvature. Results using laser measurement system were compared.
