Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks usually employ one-way reservation by sending a burst control packet (BCP) with a specific offset time, before transmitting each data burst frame (BDF). Therefore, The quality of service may be degraded because contentions may lead to loss of BDFs. Especially, this phenomenon becomes more serious when burst size is longer. This necessitates an effective method of prevention to avoid burst collision in nodes. OBS networks can employ several methods to avoid such burst losses. One is that burst size is cut short to reduce burst loss probability during scheduling time. In this paper, we evaluate the burst generation and transmission using Sub-Carrier Multiplexting (SCM) in OBS networks. We propose an appropriate burst assembly architecture and transmission scheme based on SCM in OBS networks. The performance of SCM in OBS networks is examined in terms of number of Sub-Carriers per wavelength, burst loss probability, throughput, and total bandwidth of an optical fiber.

In this paper, a new algorithm for contention resolution in optical burst switched network is proposed and simulated. The proposed algorithm is made from the all mixing of wavelength conversion, deflection routing, segmentation, and optical fiber delay line buffering. We analysis the performance of the proposed contention resolution algorithm by using ns-2. The application of the algorithm into Korea backbone network shows the superior performance of a low burst loss probability.

In recent years, WDM networks have received much attention as the Internet backbone networks because of the explosive growth of the Internet IP-based traffic. The Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as an effective optical switching technology in the WDM networks. The OBS has the advantages in 1) the high usage rate of the bandwidth, and 2) no necessity of optical buffer. However, the OBS has the burst-contention problem in the networks. The deflection routing is proposed as one of means to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a new routing method to minimize burst loss in the deflection routing based networks. In addition, we propose a QoS control method using a new routing algorithm. Finally, we show the variety of the proposed methods by computer simulations.

In this paper, we propose a scheme that can control the loss probability of low priority class bursts by dynamically adjusting the assembly threshold of low priority class. The key ideas is that the loss Probability of the longer burst increases as the load increases, thus reduced low priority class burst length decreases the loss priority at high traffic load. To achieve this aim, we first derive the relation among the loss probability, the assembly threshold, and the traffic load. In this paper we derive the relation by curve fitting on the simulation results. The ingress edge routers periodically or by event-driven receives the proper corresponding assembly threshold information from the core routers. This assembly threshold is calculated from the derived relation so that the required loss probability of the low priority class bursts in the network is satisfied. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs well to meet the loss probability target as expected.

In this paper, we propose a new prioritized Optical Burst Switching (OBS) protocol based on a hop count, which can provide an efficient utilization in optical Wireless networks. Under several legacy schemes, a switch drops the burst with a shorter time among ones regardless of its traversed hop count. As a result, the dropped burst that have been traversed more hops might cause to waste bandwidth than the one traversed a few hops. Noting that this problem, we propose the Just Enough Time(JET) with a hop count scheme which can reduce the wasted bandwidth by prioritizing the burst traversed more hops over others. From the simulation result, we show that the proposed scheme is advantageous over the legacy schemes in terms of the burst blocking probability and the link utilization.

We propose the novel optical burst switching scheme to guarantee a minimum bandwidth for multiple classes. To date, QoS studies on OBS network are capable of differentiating two classes, but have difficulties in providing a minimum bandwidth lot several classes because of lower classes' collision with the highest class bursts in the networks. To solve that problem, in our proposed scheme we assign time zones in a data channel for each class periodically, making one burst have top priority at least its zone. Also, the new burst assembling algorithm, as well as the way of managing data channel, is necessarily proposed to coordinate with the proposed OBS scheme. Through the evaluation, we show that the worst-case end-to-end delay is small enough and the received bandwidth of the lower classes is still assured regardless of the traffic load of the highest class.

In this paper, a contention-based reservation access control algorithm and a slot allocation algorithm are proposed for non-real-time bursty traffic services in the wireless ATM networks. In order to reduce the collisions of the reservation request packets, the base station scheduler calculates the transmission probability using the number of RAS minislots and the estimated load of the reservation request packets. And it broadcasts the calculated transmission probability over the downlink control channel. Mobile terminals, which have traffic burst, select randomly a RAS minislot and transmit the reservation request packet by the received transmission probability. The reservation request packet contains the number of packets in the buffer. The slot allocation is based on the buffer status of the received reservation request packets. The base station scheduler allocates slots in proportion to the total number of slots that are requested by each terminal.
