Inhibition of Penicillium Bulb Rot by Fungicides and Culture Broth of Antagonistic Bacteria during Storage of Lilium Oriental Hybrids (살균제 및 길항세균 배양액 처리에 의한 백합 저장구근의 부패 발생억제)

  • This study was conducted to find out the proper chemicals and doses for controlling the bulb disease of Lilium Oriental hybrids 'Capablanca' and 'Marco Polo' cultivars during storage, and to ascertain any disadvantage of the treatment on shoot growth and flower development. Bulbs of 'Casablanca' and 'Marco Polo' cultivars were dipped in some fungicide solutions, including azoxystrobin, benomyl+thiram, and prochloraz, and culture broth of antagonistic bacteria for one hour. The rot was apparently inhibited by azoxystrobin and prochloraz solution dippings and it was not by benomyl+thiram in bulbs produced domestically. To improve physiological integrity, calcium chloride was treated. However, this treatment had no positive effects on bulb rot of lily. When bulbs were dipped in one-fifth of diluted broth. But the bulb rot was inhibited effectively as compared with untreated during storage. Benomyl+thiram and that with calcium inhibited the sprouting in 'Casablanca' and 'Marco Polo' cultivars during cultivation. Calcium and benomyl+thiram treatments decreased growth of leaf and flower but with no statistically significant difference. Other fungicidal materials treated to bulbs showed no effect on vegetative growth and flower quality.

Identification of Pathogens Associated with Bulb Rot of Lily during Storage and Effects of Bulb Disinfection on Development of Lily Bulb Rot (백합 저장중 구근부패에 관여하는 병원균의 동정과 종구 소독효과)

  • Several pathogens associated with bulb rot of lilies in storage house were identified with respect to rot types. Rot patterns were grouped into four different types; brown rot of bottoms, brown rot of shoots, water-soaked rot and blue mold. Brown rot of bottoms was the highest in frequency with 72.5%, and brown rot of shoots the least with 23.0%. Dominant pathogens were differed with rot patterns, brown rot of bottoms by Fusarium oxysporum, blue mold and brown rot of shoots by Penicillium brevicompactum and P. fellutanum. In wound-inoculation tests, Penicillium and Fusarium isolates caused severe rot on the bulbs. Bulb disinfection before storage by captan showed the most prominent control value of 95.2% followed by thiophanate-methyl with 85.6%.

Extraction and Quality Stability of Products Containing Lilium Bulb and Lespedeza cuneata G. Don Extracts (백합과 비수리의 추출 및 추출혼합물이 함유된 음료 제품의 품질 안정성)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish optimized extraction conditions for Lilium bulb and Lespedeza cuneata G. Don and to investigate the storage stability of beverages containing extracts. The hot-water extract and the 60% ethanol extract had the highest DPPH radical scavenging activities as well as the highest total polyphenol content. The total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging activity were the highest when the Lilium bulb extract was mixed with the Lespedeza cuneata G. Don extract at the ratio of 1:4. Storage stability of beverages was determined during storage at 10, 25, and 35℃ for 6 months. The pH was decreased from 4.15 to 4.01-4.05, while the acidity was increased from 0.60% to 0.70-0.75% after storage for 6 months. The soluble solid contents were not changed during storage of 6 months. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was decreased after 4-6 months. The Hunter b (yellowness) values decreased at 35℃ after storage for 6 months while the lightness (L) and redness (a) were not changed during storage for 6 months. The total saponin content was not remarkably changed during 2 months of storage, while it decreased after 4-6 months of storage. The flavonoid content was decreased 47% and 55% from an intial 21.7 mg/100 mL to 10.3 mg/100 mL and 12.0 mg/100 mL after 1 month of storage and then remained stable until 6 months. General bacteria and coliform group were not detected during storage for 6 months.

Detection of Lily symptomless virus, Lily mottle virus, and Cucumber mosaic virus from Lilium Grown in Korea by RT-PCR (RT-PCR법을 이용한 백합 바이러스 LSV, LMoV, CMV의 검출)

  • Leaf samples and bulbs showing characteristic symptoms of virus infection were collected from Gang-won, Chung-nam, and Jeju Province of Korea in 2008-2009. Three viruses, Lily symptomless virus (LSV), Lily mottle virus (LMoV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were detected by RT-PCR. Virus-infected plant samples were identified; 12 plants with LSV, 20 plants with LMoV, and 1 plant with CMV. Of the twelve LSV infected samples, seven samples were found to be mix-infected with LMoV and LSV. Symptoms of LMoV and LSV mixed infection were fairly severe, like as vein clearing, leaf curling, leaf mottling, leaf mosaic, and yellow streaking. Mixed infection with LMoV and LSV was also found in lily bulbs which have been stored under unfavorable environmental conditions. LMoV predominated in our tests, whereas spread of Lilyvirus X (LVX) was not found. The nucleotide sequences of coat protein (CP) region of seven isolates (4 LMoV, 2 LSV, and 1 CMV) were compared with the corresponding regions of LMoV (AJ564636), LSV (AJ516059) and CMV(AJ296154). The nucleotide sequence homologies between reference viruses and seven isolates were 95-99%. Complete sequencing of seven isolates is necessary to obtain more information on the molecular characteristics of these viruses as well as to increase sensitivity and rapidity of viral detection.

'Asian Flame' an Asiatic Hybrid Lily with Unspotted Red Petals (무반점 적색 아시아틱 나리 '아시안플레임' 육성)

  • An Asiatic lily cultivar 'Asian Flame' was bred in 2007 at National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) of Korea. The crossing was conducted between female parent A94-34 ('Montreux' ${\times}$ 'Anabelle') and male parent 'Fire' by stigmatic pollination at Suwon in 1996. First selection was done and tentatively named as A98-98 in 1998. After in vitro multiplication and bulb production of A98-98 line, growth and flowering characteristic tests has been conducted from 2005 to 2007. The evaluation of characteristics and preference were surveyed at a lily flower show of NIHHS in 2007 in Taean. The new cultivar 'Asian Flame' flowers in middle of June and grows to an average of 122.7 cm in height. Flowers bloom upward-facing, red (RHS 45B) petals. Year-round flowering is possible by storage of the bulb under $-1.5^{\circ}C$ conditions. For forcing culture, it is necessary to add calcium to the fertilizer or remove side scales of large bulb to prevent leaf scorch.
