  • This study was conducted to examine the biomass and energy content of 60- to 70-year-old Quercus mongolica stand facing northern and southern aspect in Mt. Baekwoon (800 m above sea level), Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do and in Mt. Halla (1,000 m above sea level), Jeju-do. The total biomass was 288.4 ton/ha in northern aspect and 241.9 ton/ha in southern aspect of Mt. Baekwoon while 368.4 ton/ha in northern aspect and 364.3 ton/ha in southern aspect of Mt. Halla. Annual net production was 20.7 ton/ha/yr in northern aspect and 17.7 ton/ha/yr in southern aspect of Mt. Baekwoon while 19.0 ton/ha/yr in northern aspect and 21.2 ton/ha/yr in southern aspect of Mt. Halla. Total biomass and annual net production of Mt. Halla were greater than those of Mt. Baekwoon. The net assimilation rate (NAR) was 5.05 in northern aspect and 4.09 in southern aspect of Mt. Baekwoon, while 4.60 in northern aspect and 3.66 in southern aspect of Mt. Halla, Total energy content was 5,666 GJ/ha in northern aspect and 4,793 GJ/ha in southern aspect of Mt. Baekwoon while 6,550 GJ/ha in northern aspect and 6,435 GJ/ha in southern aspect of Mt. Halla. Annual energy content was 365 GJ/ha/yr in northern aspect and 360 GJ/ha/yr in southern aspect of Mt. Baekwoon while 351 GJ/ha/yr in northern aspect and 347 GJ/ha/yr in southern aspect of Mt. Halla. Annual energy content of Mt. Baekwoon was greater than that of Mt. Halla.

  • To investigate the fungal diversity in Mt. Paekwoon, higher fungi were collected in July, 1991 from the two locations of Seoul National University Forests in Kwangyang-gun, Chonnam Province. A total of 137 fungal species were collected and classified. Following six species were identified as new species unrecorded in Korea. Their morphological and taxonomic features including microscopic characteristics of spores and cystidia were also reported in this paper. Marasmius pulcherripes Peck ; Agaricus purpurellus(Moller) Moller ; Coprinus echinosporus Buller ; Xerocomus nigromaculatus Hongo ; Boletellus shichianus(Teng & Ling) Teng ; Russula kansaiensis Hongo.

  • The objective of this study was to survey the oil contamination around the Mountain Baegun at Uiwang city to obtain the preliminary data for bioremediation. For measuring the oil concentrations and physical properties from soil, we analyzed BTEX. TPH and pH, organic content, water content, pormeability coefficient, gravity, porosity and used the purge & trap method for analyzing BTEX. Using the Accelerated Solvent Extractor, we pretreated the samples and then analyzed TPH using GC-FID as soon as possible. From the analysis results, maximum concentration of TPH was 24.773mg/kg and BTEX was 101.7mg/kg. The results of TPH at the Mountain Baegun were higher than the enforcement standard of soil contamination(Korea) and the BTEX concentrations were also higher than the advisory standard of soil contamination(Korea). From these results, the Mountain Baegun may requires to remedy the oil-contaminated soil. In addition, we performed the field bioremediation test for five weeks at the Mountain Baegun using the microbial additives that were developed by our laboratory. From the results of the field test, we could find the about 95% of the oil was removed from the contaminated soil in five weeks. So we consider that it is the one of the useful solutions to remedy the oil-polluted site.

Investigation of Lichen Species as a Biomonitor of Atmospheric Ozone in 'Backwoon' Mountain, Korea (백운산(白雲山) 서식(棲息) 지의류(地衣類)를 이용(利用)한 오존 민감성(敏感性) 지표종(地表種) 선발(選拔))

  • Lichen flora of 'Backwoon' mountain, Korea, was investigated during the summer of 1998 and 1999 to screen out lichen species which can be used as a biomonitor for atmospheric ozone. The identified foliose or fructicose lichens in the area were classified into 9 families, 20 genera and 34 species. The dominant lichen species in the area were found to be Leptogium sp., Parmelia sp., Parmotrema sp., Phaeophyscia sp. and Cladonia sp. It was also found that lichen species showing a wide range of sensitiveness to air pollution were distributed in 'Backwoon' mountain. The Parmotrema austrosinense, P. tinctorum, Certrelia braunsiana and Ramalina yasudae collected in the area were exposed to ozone at the level of 200ppb, 8hr/day in controlled growth chamber for 2 weeks. Malondialdehyde(MDA), hydroperoxy conjugated dienes(HPCD), soluble protein content and OD435nm/OD415nm ratio for phaeophytinization of chlorophyll were measured and a pollution index(PI) was calculated for each lichen. Ozone exposure severely damaged to the lichens in the order of P. austrosinense>P. tinctorum>C. braunsiana>R. yasudae. P. austrosinens easily identified and widely distributed in Korea is likely to be a very useful biomonitor of air pollution, especially for ozone. These results indicate that Korean lichen species can be used as a biomonitor for air pollution to evaluate air quality contaminated with ozone.
