  • This paper is about the new distribution system of the electric customer inside. The power loss in the distribution system of the customer is disregarded and rarely managed so for. But, economically, this loss is not small quantity to ignore. So, in this paper, we suggest that the new distribution system of the electric customer inside by simply changing the locations of power transformer and other power facilities which is located inside of the customer. And we also show that the power loss is decreased with this systematic changing by approximated calculation.

  • This paper presents an algorithm that evaluated the overload influence by bus upon the distribution system by calculating the daily load curve of PEVs charging by bus based on the daily charging patterns of PEVs according to PEVs penetration scenarios. The proposed algorithm calculates the number of PEVs to estimate the number of households by bus; the probability density function of the charging start time of PEVs, considering driving characteristics of PEVs and the daily load curve of PEVs charging by bus considering battery characteristics according to PEVs penetration scenarios. To verify the evaluation of the overload influence by bus on the distribution system in terms of the proposed algorithm, the cases were reviewed on the target bus(apartment and detached houses) among the feeders of the distribution systems at Dongtan new-town in Korea.

  • The increasing use of power electronic equipment in distribution system has been the reason for the greater concern about a harmonic in recent time. Therefore, it is necessary for measurement and modelling to analyze a harmonic level and a transfer characteristic in distribution system. In this paper, the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) is selected to analyze harmonic characteristic of distribution system by IEC 61000-3-6. Harmonic voltage and orient were measured at the PCC of real distribution system Harmonic distribution, nonlinear load component and Total Harmonic Distortion(THD) were verified. The effective and accurate modelling of real distribution system were proved through a analysis of harmonic impedance, voltage and current under steady-state. Harmonic transfer characteristic were investigated through a analysis of harmonic voltage and current under harmonic current source.

  • Recently, with the increasement of the interest about global warming, pollutions, and so on, a number of distributed generations(DGs) such as photovoltaic(PV) and wind power(WP), are interconnected with distribution systems. However, installing of DGs makes power flow changes such as directions, one-direction to bi-direction, and increasing/decreasing of fault current. Therefore, it may cause the critical problems. This paper proposes an evaluation algorithm for bi-directional protection coordination and presents an evaluation system for protection coordination based on this algorithm. Additionally, the result shows that the existing method may cause critical problems, and also the effectiveness of proposed method is verified.

  • Recently, with the world-wide issues about global warming and CO2 reduction, a number of distributed generations(DGs) such as photovoltaic(PV) and wind power(WP), are interconnected with the distribution systems. However, DGs can change the direction of the power flow from one-direction to bi-direction, and also change the direction and amount of fault current of existing distribution systems. Therefore, it may cause the critical problems on the power quality and protection coordination. This paper proposes an operation algorithm for bi-directional protection coordination using and apply it for the evaluation system for protection coordination. From the simulation results It is found that the proposed method is more effective and convenient than existing method.

  • Comparing with transmission networks, the faults in distribution networks more often occurs because of the complicated structure and the adjacency to customers. Moreover the faults give direct damage to customers. So fault diagnosis and blackout restoration in distribution networks are very important elements to reduce the damage of customers and to maintain the stability. The restoration problem of distribution networks is subject to time. Minimizing the switching numbers in restoration process is the crucial element. In other words. the best restoration is to restore all blackout area through just one switching, if not the restoration has to be accomplished through several switching. This paper proposes the efficient restoration system in distribution networks to minimize the switching numbers. The proposed system uses the dynamic division method of hierarchical structure which consists of heuristic searching method and meta algorithm. The proposed system is applied to the sample networks, and the results showed a promising possibility.

  • The typical distribution systems have the power flow from distribution substations (sources) to customers (load) only as one direction. However, in the case where new energy power sources are connected to distribution systems, the output variations of new energy sources to distribution systems, which is so called reverse power flow, may cause the bi-directional power flow. So, the reverse power flow has severe impacts on typical power system, for example power quality problems, protection coordination problems, and so on. Therefore, this paper proposes the algorithm for Multi-functional protection devices in distribution systems in the case where new energy sources are interconnected. The proposed algorithm is verified to show the effectiveness by simulating and experimenting the prototype systems.

  • Renewable energy resources are rapidly becoming an integral part of electricity generation portfolios around the world due to declining costs, government subsidies, and corporate sustainability goal. Interacting wind, solar, and load forecast errors can create significant unpredictable impacts on the distribution system, feeder congestion, voltage standard and reactive power stability margins. These impacts will be increasing with the increasing penetration levels of variable renewable generation in the power systems. There is a limit to the maximum amount of renewable energy sources that can be connected in a distribution feeder by the connection rule of transmission & distribution facility in Korea. This study represents the decision plans of hosting capacity for distribution feeders without the need for significant upgrades to the existing transmission infrastructure. Especially, the paper suggests and discusses the hosting capacity standard of feeder cables and minimum load calculation of distribution feeders.

  • It is always desirable that the continuation of power flow through the lines should not be interrupted for a long time. The optimized guideline of reclosers on distribution lines is known to improve the reliability of power systems, the protection functions on distribution systems heavily rely on the number and placement of such reclosers. This study reviewed the effect of using protection settings methodology with the number of reclosing operations to reduce the damage sustained during faults on distribution networks. The aim of the study is to determine the number of reclosing operations and fault current conditions based on simulation data of PSCAD/EMTDC for standard distribution networks. It is found that the determination of the number of operations on reclosers, which are the protection function of feeders, helped to optimize the operation and reliability of distribution networks.
