Detection of fluorescence from soils contaminated with monoaromatic hydrocarbons (유류 오염 토양에서의 단일방향족 탄화수소 농도 측정을 위한 자외선 형광 분석에 관한 연구)

  • In order to determine the contamination of the aromatic hydrocarbons in soil, a fiber-optic sensing technique with fluorescence detector has been proposed. Previous researches have shown that the optimal condition for detecting benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX) was 260 nm /290 nm (excitation/emission wavelength). However, broader fluorescence spectra of BTEX-polluted soil sample ranging from 300 nm to 600 nm were observed. Additionally, the intensity of fluorescence increased with increasing BTEX concentration, which was conspicuous in the fine-particle soil, The overall results indicated that the suggested technique could be useful for in-situ monitoring system for subsurface oil-storage tank.

  • Aromatic hydrocarbons are known to be recalcitrant, so that they have been concerned as pollutant chemicals. Microorganisms play a major role in the breakdown and mineralization of these compounds. However, the kinetics of the biodegradation process may be much slower than desired from environmental consideration. The biodegradation of aromatic hydrocarbons is conducted by oxidation to produce catechol as a common intermediate which is metabolized for carbon and energy sources. In this study, a bacterial isolate capable of degrading several aromatic hydrocarbons was isolated from the contaminated wastewater of Yeocheon industrial complex. On the basis of biochemical characteristics and major cellular fatty acids, the isolate was identified as Pseudomonas putida Z104. The strain Z104 can utilize benzoate and catechol as the sole carbon and energy sources via a serial degradative pathway. The strain degraded actively 0.5 mM catechol in MM2 medium at pH 7.0 and 3$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons has been studied over synthetic ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst having high silica to alumina ratio. The conversion products were olefins, paraffins, cycloparaffins, and aromatics, and the catalyst showed especially high selectivity toward the formation of aromatics. The catalyst showed the shape-selectivity and the size of molecules in the product was limited approximately to the size of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. Hydrogen form(HZSM-5) was more active, indicating reactions following the dehydration of methanol seemed to be mainly catalyzed by acid sites. Comparison of the reaction characteristics and acid site distribution of the ZSM-5 catalyst with those of mordenite and faujasite type catalysts suggests that cross-linked pore channel structure and the strong acidity of the ZSM-5 catalyst are primarily responsible for the selective formation of aromatics over this catalyst.

  • The fate and behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) and heavy metals in the environment are mainly controlled by their interactions with various components of soils and sediments. Due to their large surface area and abundance in many soils, smectites may greatly influence the fate and transport of the contaminants. In our experiment, PAH sorption by hexadecyltimethylammonium(HDTMA)-modified smectite linearly increased in proportion to the amount of HDTMA added on the clay. However, trimethylammonium(TMA)-modified smectite did not show superiority in its sorption of PAH compared with the HDTMA-smectite or dodecyltrimethylammonium(DTMA)- smectite. Meanwhile, the smectites modified with the same cationic surfactants adsorbed Cd$^{2+}$(heavy metal) significantly from water at low surfactant loading level, but the Cd$^{2+}$ adsorption linearly decreased as the loading of surfactant increased. The result shows that the sorption tendency of organoclays for organic or inorganic contaminants was significantly influenced by the amount and size of the surfactants added on the clay. This reveals that the stabilization and configuration of cationic surfactant formed on the clay interlayer of different sizes may be an important factor in controlling the sorptive capacity of each pollutant in the environment.

Also oil composition varies according to crude source, refining, processing, handling and storage. The oil fingerprint method is application if specific knowledge of petrochemicals and use if sophisticated analytical equipment and techniques to identify the source(s) if oil pollution. KCG currently utilizes four primary analytical techniques: Gas Chromatography (GC), Fluorescence Spectroscopy(FL), Infrared Spectroscopy(IR) and Gas Chromatography mass spectrometer(GC/MS). Of all these techniques, GC technique are most widely used Gas Chromatography is used as a primary analytical method because high reliableness, high separating efficiency and repeatability.

  • Composition of volatile flavor components of chestnut flower sand honey were investigated by GC and GC-MS. A total of 64 components including 14 aromatic compounds, 13 hydrocarbons, 7 fatty acids, 4 terpenes, 12 oxygenated hydrocarbons, and 7 misellaneous compounds and a total 41 components including 7 aromatic compounds, 16 hydrocarbons, 12 fatty acids, 1 terpene, 2 oxygenated hydrocarbons, and 3 misellaneous compounds were identified from total volatile concentrates of chestnut flower and honey respectively. The main components of flower volatile were 2-phenyl ethyl alcohol, 1-phenyl ethyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol which comprise 49.02% of this volatiles The main components of flower volatile were 2-phenyl ethyl alcohol, 1-phenyl ethyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol which comprise 49.02% of this volatiles. Aromatic compounds such as 2-phenyl ethyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, 1-phenyl ethyl alcohol, 1-(2-aminophenyl) ethanone act as major contributor to the characteristic honey-like flavor of chestnut honey.

  • The flash points and the fire points are one of the most important combustible properties used to determine the potential for the fire and explosion hazards of flammable substances. In this study, the flash points of aromatic hydrocarbons, were measured by using Pensky-Martens Closed Cup apparatus(ASTM-D93) and Tag Open-Cup apparatus(ASTM D 1310-86). Also the fire points of aromatic hydrocarbons, were measured by using Tag Open-Cup apparatus. The measured flash points were in good agreement with reference values. The measured fire points compared with the estimated values based on 1.23 times stoichiometric concentration. The values calculated by the proposed equation were in agreement with measured values.
