  • Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) is an extremely rare type of thyroid tumor, with spares reports on its clinical course. SETTLE is derived from branchial pouch or thymic remnants, and classified as a low grade, malignant neoplasm due to its indolent growth and tendency to develop delayed metastasis. Therefore, stringent initial workups and long-term follow-up are required to prevent misdiagnosis. We present a case of recurrent spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) in the glottis of 57 year-old male patient, who had a history of surgical excision for the SETTLE from the thyroid gland 5 years ago. Transoral CO2 laser surgery was performed to remove the glottic tumor and there was no evidence of local recurrence at 11 months postoperatively.

Immunocytochemical Studies on the Pancreatic Endocrine Cells of Phylogenetically different Vertebrates I. Mammalia and Aves (계통발생에 따른 각종 척추동물의 췌장 내분비세포에 관한 면역세포화학적 연구 1. 포유강 및 조강에 관하여)

  • 척추동물 11목 21종의 췌장에서 insulin(B)세포, glucagon(A)세포, somatostatin( D)세포 및 pancreatic polypeptide(PP)세포 등을 면역세포화학적 방법으로 동정하여 이들의 출현율, 분포양상 및 형띨 등을 계통별로 비교하였다. 포유강에서는 전형적인 췌도를 형성하였고, 조강에서는 대 ·소췌도로 구분되었다. 내분비세포의 크기는 계통간의 차이가 있어서 B세포와 PP세포는 포유강의 것이 조강의 것에 비해 윤으나, A세포와 D세포는 그 반대이었다. 세포의 모양은 B세포의 경우 두 강에서 대체로 원형 및 난원형이었고, A세포와 D세포는 원형, 난원형 및 방추형이었다. PP세포는 방추형 및 난원형이 대다수 이었으며 간혹 원형 또는 다각형 등의 모습도 나타났다. 세포들의 출현율은 두 강에서 모두 B세포가가장 많았고, A, D및 PP세포 순으로 낮아졌다. B세포는포유강이 조강보다높았고, A, D및 PP세포는조강이 포유강보다 많았다. B세포는 조강의 경우 대췌도 주변부와 소췌도 중앙부에 분포하였고, 포유강에서는 중앙부에 균등하게 분포하였다. A와 0세포는 포유강에서 주로 췌도 주면부에 분포하나, 조강에서는 췌도중앙부에 위치하였다. PP세포는 두 강에서 대부분 췌도 주변부에 위치하였다. 일반적으로 두강에서 모두 외분비 선포조직에서도 내분비세포들이 출현하였으며 일부 종에서는 췌관상피에서도 내분비세포들이 드물게 나타났다.

Immunohistochemical study of the endocrine cells of the gastrointestinal mucosa of the African clawed toad, Xenopus laevis (아프리카 발톱두꺼비의 소화관내분비세포에 관한 면역조직화학적 연구)

  • The gastrointestinal endocrine cells of the African clawed toad, Xenopus laevis have been investigated immunohistochemically using the avidin-biotin method. Seven antisera were tested and three endocrine cell types immunoreacted with antisera to neurotensin, GRP and substance P. A moderate number of neurotensin-immunoreactive cells were weakly reacted in the small intestine. GRP-immunoreactive cells were mainly situated among the upper portion in the fundic glands, and the basal portion in the pyloric glands. These cells were oval and round in shape. On the other hand, in the intestine they were thin spindly cells with the epithelium. Substance P-immunoreactive cells were observed in among intestinal epithelium. However, no secretin-, motilin-, M-Enk- and PYY-immunoreactive cells were found in the GIT of the African clawed toads.

Studies on the Scouring Effects of Scouring Soap Made from Rapeseed Oil (유채유로 만든 견정련비누의 정련)

  • Using the new scouring soap made from rapeseed oil, various scouring test was done souring effects of new scouring soap were estimated. In the effects of scouring soap on the degumming ratio, OS (the soap made from oleic acid) was the most excellent and the next was RS (the soap made from rapeseed oil). Both OS and RS were more excellent than MS (the soap on the market). In a buffer power of soap solution, OS and RS were good, but MS was poor. The uneven dyeing was not observed in the silk fabric degummed by OS and RS, but observed in silk fabric degummed by MS. The value of tenacity and elongation in the silk degummed by OS and RS was higher that degummed by MS. In the crease recovery, softness and whiteness, the order of value was OS, RS, MS.

  • We observed ultra-structure of the tribocytic organ of Firicola seoulensis with transmission electron microscope. Microvilli are observed on the surface of the tribocytic organ. Below the muscle layer, we can find three types of cells. Type I cell has electron lucent cytoplasm with a few granules, while type II cell shows electron dense cytoplasm and the particulate granules. Type III cell's electron dense cytoplasm possesses many granules. Of the above three cells, Type I and II cells are believed as tegumental cells. Type III cells are thought as glandular cells specific to the tribocytic organ. This finding on also explain the secretory function of the tribocytic organ of f seoulensis.

  • The present study was carried out light and electron microscopic analysis of the structures of the tritocerebral neurons in butterfly (Pieris rapae Linne) from Insecta. We have summarized our morphological analyses as follows: In insecta, tritocerebrum of butterfly shows tentatively classified 6 neuronal types without any arrangement of cell layers. Type I cells with long oval or spindle shape are the largest out of 6 kinds. The nucleus contains a small amount of chromatin. In the large volume of cytoplasm there contained rich cell organelles except granular endoplasmic reticulum. Type II cells are smaller than type I neurons, but their ultrastructural features are similar to type I neuron. They have well-developed granular endoplasmic reticulum. Type III cells are spherical or triangular and smaller than type I neuron with spherical nuclei. Cell organelles are mostly prominent, esp., mitochondria, ribosomes and fine fibrils which are arranged in periphery of the cytoplasm.

  • Impaired processing of facial information is one of the broad ranges of cognitive deficits seen in patients with schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the differences in brain activities involved in the process of facial working memory between schizophrenic patients and healthy comparison subjects. Ten patients with schizophrenia were recruited along with matched healthy volunteers as a comparison group. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess cortical activities during the performance of a 1-back working memory paradigm using images of neutral faces as mnemonic content. The patient group performed the tasks with reduced accuracy. Group analysis revealed that left fusiform gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, bilateral middle frontal gyri/insula, left middle temporal gyrus, precuneus and vermis of cerebellum and showed decreased cortical activities in the patient group. On the other hand, an increased level of activation in lateral prefrontal cortex and parietal lobule was observed from the patient group, all in the right hemisphere. A decreased level of activity in the left fusiform gyrus among the patient group implicates inefficient processing of facial information. An increased level of activation in prefrontal and parietal neural networks from the patient group confirms earlier findings on the impaired working memory of patients with schizophrenia.

  • In Vitro fertilization of U. unicinctus eggs observed by immunofluorescence and electron microscopes revealed an overview of the meiotic pattern of the tide animals. The eggs have been fertilized early at germinal vesicle stage, followed by germinal vesicle break down (GVBD), but pre-mitotic aster like structure could not be resolved by the methods employed in this work. The meiotic features, such as rotation-shift movement of spindle fibers, behavior of spermatozoonmonaster in the egg cytoplasm and active spindle fiber of the 1st polar body, have been observed. The antitubulin-FITC fluorescence show the 2nd meiotic apparatus appeared firstly parallel to the tangential line of the oolemma, proceeding the meiosis, its bipolarity is rotated and shifted towards the oolemma. The polar bodysite of the oolemma was not amorphous, but active in a sense of anti-tubulin-FITC reactions during the extrusions of the polar bodies. The immunofluorescence reactions of the spermatozoon centriole appeared at a later stage of the 2nd meiosis. During the time periods, the fertilized spermatozoon resided in the egg cytoplasm. Activating the centrioles, spermatozoon approaches towards the chromosomal materials of the 2nd oocyte. This suggests that spermatozoon centrioles initiate and play a roll to fuse male and female pronuclei.

Cytologic Aspects of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Captive African Hedgehog (Altelerix albiventris) (고슴도치의 구강 편평상피암종의 세포학적 고찰 1증례)

  • A 3-year-old intact female hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) was presented for evaluation of mandibular swelling. Fine needle aspiration of swollen mandibular was performed and smears were stained with Romanowsky type stain for cytological evaluation. Smears were highly cellular with predominance of variably shaped keratinized or non keratinized squamous cells with low numbers of spindloid to abnormally elongated cells. Cytologic impression was squamous cell carcinoma. The mass was surgically removed for histological examination. Microscopically tortuous and anastomosing delicate to broad pegs and nests of neoplastic squamous epithelial cells were supported by a moderate collagenous and spindloid fibroblast stroma. Tumor cells had moderate anisocytosis and mild anisokaryosis and range from moderately to well keratinized, with areas of intratumoral acantholysis accompanied by mixed stromal lymphoplasmacytic, neutrophilic inflammation. The mitotic index is 2-3 per high-power field. Tumor cells were expanding the subcutis subjacent to the layer of skeletal muscle and incorporating the osseous tissue fragments. The final diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma. The patient survived three months after surgery without any further medical treatments.

Tree Growth, Productivity, and Management Efficiency of High-Density Apple Orchards according to Training Systems in Korea (한국 밀식사과원의 정지전정에 따른 수체생장과 생산성 및 경영효율 비교)

  • The present study conducted a comparison on tree growth and productivity of high-density apple orchards by several orchard management systems: making scaffolds by heading-back and thinning out pruning (T-1), maintaining scaffolds upward and bearing shoots downward (T-2), managing branches slightly upward without heading-back (T-3), keeping leaders downward and shoots pending (T-4), maintaining leaders high and branches horizontal with severe pinching (T-5), making leaders with lower branches vigorous and upper shoots pending (T-6), and controlling very high planting density with bending branches (T-7). In conclusion, the orchards of (T-5) and (T-6) management systems showed a superior performance in controlling tree growth, productivity, and quality of fruits. Also, superior management efficiency was obtained in the orchards of (T-5) and (T-6).
