Occurrence ecology and possibility of mass trapping of Popillia quadriguttata, one of the most serious turfgrass insect pest in domestic golf courses was investigated using pheromone traps in Gimpo and Jinhae. Peak period of adult occurrence of P. quadriguttata was late June and early July in Gimpo Seaside Country Club from 2006 to 2008. It was early and middle July in Youngwon Country Club in 2006. The first catched day of P. quadriguttata adult was 20 June, while the last day was 10 September in Gimpo Seaside Country Club, 2006. Mean catched number of P. quadriguttata adult in Japanese beetle pheromone trap per day in peak period of occurrence were 18.2, 25.7, 29.0, and 15.7 at 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively. Mean catched number of P. quadriguttata adult in Japanese beetle pheromone trap were more in fairways or roughs than tees or greens. Possibility of control of scarab beetle using pheromone trap with pesticide treatment was investigated against oriental beetle, Blitopertha orientalis in Dongrae Benest Golf Club. Mean number of dead oriental beetle adult were more higher(2.9 folds) in fenitrothion EC treatment than fenitrothion EC treatment after set oriental beetle pheromone trap.

This experiment was conducted to develop control method for Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) on eggplant using sticky trap method. According to the color of the sticky traps, the attractiveness of the B. tabaci was the highest in the yellow trap, followed by the green and orange. However, white, blue, red, black and green sticky traps have reduced attractiveness of B. tabaci. In order to improve the efficiency and attractiveness of sticky trap to the B. tabaci, the different kinds of sugars such as glucose, fructose, oligosaccharide, starch syrup and pure sugar were added to sticky traps respectively. However, the effect of B. tabaci attractiveness was low in starch syrup, pure sugar, and non-treated sticky traps. The attracting effect of B. tabaci was depending on the location of sticky trap. The highest value was obtained where sticky traps were located in the top of the eggplant, followed by 30 cm above from the top level. In addition, we were installed up to 40 sticky traps to determine the optimal amount of sticky traps to control B. tabaci in eggplant. When increasing the sticky traps, the number of adult and nymphs of B. tabaci were tended to be decreased significantly. This tendency was more effective in the latter stages than in the early stages. As the number of sticky traps increased, not only the growth rate of eggplant, leaf length, and stem diameter were to be better. But also number of fruits and product marketable value were increased at the early stage of growing as well. The study had proven that the sticky traps had an effect on increasing the yield at the early stage of growth, but the efficiency of controlling decreased due to the high density of B. tabaci of the next generation.
This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of herbicide chlormethoxynil 7G, CNP 9G and butachlor 3.5/pyrazolate 6G on weed control and seedling growth in rice seedbed. Different quantities of the herbicides were applied as soil incorporation or surface broadcasting. At earlier sowing annual grasses such as Echinochlva spp. and Alopecurus spp. were dominated, but Cyperus spp. were dominated at later sowing. Weed suppression by herbicides was greater in soil incorporation than in broadcasting and chlormethoxynil 7G and CNP 9G application (30kg/ha) showed about 70% weed control, while butachlor 3.5/pyrazolate 6G (10-20kg/ha) showed 90 to 100% weed control. At lower rate of butachlor 3.5/pyrazolate 6G (10kg/ha) emergence ratio, healthy seedling ratio and relative growth rate of rice were higher, and phytotoxicity was lower than in the others.

The mixture (MX) of acetic acid (AA) and lactic acid (LA) was examined for its effectiveness in the control of the pine wood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus contaminated in cymbidium culture medium. Nematode mortality in vitro was nearly 100% in AA and MX at the concentrations of 5.0-1.0% (pH 2.6 - 4.2) and in LA only at 5.0% (pH 3.5), but lowered at concentrations of 0.5-0.1% (pH 5.1-6.9) more significantly in LA than AA and MX. MX of most concentrations caused higher nematode mortality than the average response to AA and LA. All treatments of MX (0.5% and 0.25%), fosthiazate (standard and double concentrations) and culture dilution of Paenibacillus polymyxa GBR-1 ($10^7$colony-forming units/ml) reduced significantly the nematode populations in the cymbidium culture medium, compared to non-treatment control, with no significant difference among the treatments. No phytotoxicity occurred in all treatments. pH of the medium with the time after treatment and growths of 2-year-old cymbidium were not significantly different among treatments. Considering the safety and price of the organic acids, use of MX in the processes for culturing cymbidium may be a practically reliable and eco-friendly way in the control of the quarantine nematode in cymbidium.
For the development of integrated pest management system by harmonizing biological and chemical control, some experiments were carried out to select low toxic pesticides and to evaluate residual toxicity to natural enemies. Leaf dipping method and body dipping method were set up for evaluating toxicity to minute pirate bug, Orius strigicollis adult. We had tested 52 kinds of pesticides (33 insecticides, 19 fungicides) commonly used to control greenhouse insects, mites, and disease pests to natural enemies at the recommended concentration. Fourteen insecticides by body dipping method, 12 insecticides by leaf dipping method and 19 fungicides were selected as low toxic pesticides to O. strigicollis adult. After insecticide spraying at recommending dose on the sweet pepper plant, we examined residual effect of insecticides by introducing natural enemies on different days. Safety interval for introduction of O. strigicollis adult was established according to residual toxicity of pesticides. Safety insecticides at one day after treatment were pyraclofos, methomyl, thiodicarb, esfenvalerate bifenthrin, alpha-cypermethrin, etofenprox, fenvalerate, imidacloprid, acetamiprid, abamectin, emamectin benzoate, spinosad, indoxacarb. However, residual toxicity of nee-nicotinoids last up to 21 days to O. strigicollis adults.

This study was conducted to determine the growth characteristics, and the effect of plant growth regulators on the sprouting and growth of purple nutsedge(Cyperus rotundus L.) in order to establish effective control system in lawn ground. The flowering of purple nutsedge was initiated 30 days after transplanting regardless of the transplanting time. Low temperature less than $10^{\circ}C$ after flowering was required for tuber formation, showing that the tuberization was related to air temperature. Shoot number and dry weight of underground portion of purple nutsedge was slightly affected by plant growth regulators such as benzylamino purine, abscisic acid, brassinosteroid and jasmonate. Imazaquin applied at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after transplanting induced multi-shooting and inhibited shoot growth indicating that the herbicide played a role as plant growth regulator at a concentration of 30 and 60g ai/10a. The greatest inhibition of purple nutsedge was obtained by pyrazosulfuron-ethyl as applied 1 weeks after transplanting, showing almost 100% control of purple nutsedge. Tuber of purple nutsedge composed of 61.83% of moisture, 31.60% of carbohydrates, 4.03% of crude protein, 1.57% of crude fat and 0.97% of crude ash.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of weed control and lodging reduction in the cultivation of buckwheat. The effect of weed control was significant. In the herbicide plot, nevertheless, grain yield and plant height were more decreased than habitual and vinyl mulching plots. Therefore, the application of herbicide was considered unnecessary in buckwheat cultivation having short growth period. In the habitual plot, dominant weed species are Digitaria sanguinalis, Erigeron annuus, E. canadensis, Setaria viridis, and Stellaria alsine var. undulata. On the effect of plant dwarf agent, C.C.C. and TIBA, plant height became shorter than habitual plot but the grain yield decreased. The latter tip pinching time, the less in grain yield which indicate tip pinching is ineffective in grain yield and lodging reduction. Among the wild species and cultivars of Fagopyrum, F. urophyllum was differentiated into xylem and phloem tissues indicating woody plant. Stem hardness of this species was the hardest as 625,110,000 dyne/cm$^2$which is at least 3.5 times harder than F. esculentum cv. Suwon #12. Therefore, it needs that the woody habitat gene of F. urophyllum is transfered into other cultivars in buckwheat breeding strategy.
The purpose of this study was to establish the intergrated control of rice insect pests. Specific objectives were to reveal the diversity of natural enemies in rice field environment, to obtain basic informations of their population dynamics, and to screen the selective insecticides for the conservation of natural enemies. The results of the study were as follows. 1. In numbers of species and in numbers of each species of parasitic Hymenoptera of rice insect pests were more diverse and abundant in rice paddy leeves and banks than paddy fields. Braconid Mymarid and pteromalid were predominated in the field and their population was high during early August to mid September. 2. Of the predatory spiders, Pirata subpiraticus was the largest in number and amounted to 72% of the total, Gnatonarium dentatum, Pachygnatha clerki and Clubiona japonicola were the next. It was also found that P. subpiraticus had three generations in a year. 3. Hence the activities of the predatory spider species and parasitic Hymenoptera were high in early to mid August and September, it would be better promising to avoid chemical applications at this time of periods as possible. 4. The relative toxicity of several insecticides which have been used for the control of brown plant hopper (BPH) showed that P. subpiraticus was 1.1-73.1 times higher than BPH and G. dentatum to P. subpiraticus was 1.1-73.1 times, respectively. 5. Three conventional insecticides, Padan, Diazinon and Carbofuran were screened for toxicity to predatory spider species. The insecticides deffered in their toxicity to the predators. However, Padan was appeared to be the least toxic to the predators.
The Korean flowering cherry is a popular tree. However, the trees have started to defoliate early, including those in Gurye. Thus, it is necessary to identify the causes of the early defoliation and how to manage them. Therefore, the purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to investigate the early defoliation of flowering cherry trees, 2) to identify the differences in growth and flowering of the trees in response to treatment, and 3) to suggest an optimal treatment for the trees. The experiment was conducted in Gurye at a site 3km long with 102 flowering cherry trees along a street. There were three treatments: control, an environmentally friendly insecticide and a disinfectant(treatment 1), and an environmentally friendly insecticide, a disinfectant, and irrigation (treatment 2). The trees in Gurye were compared to trees on Jeju Island. The defoliation rates of the flowering cherry in Gurye were significantly higher than those on Jeju Island at each measurement time. Within Gurye, the defoliation rate was significantly higher in the trees of the control than in the two treatments and only the trees in the control from Gurye had shot-hole disease. Post-treatment, twigs collected from the control during April showed significantly poorer growth, lower numbers of flowering buds per twig, and lower numbers of foliar buds. The trees given treatment 1 showed significantly greater growth, number of total buds, flowering buds per twig, and density of buds than the trees given treatment 2. After analyzing the correlations, it was established that early defoliation led to poorer growth, affecting the flowering of the trees.
Accurate forecasting of occurrence time and abundance of insect pests is essential for developing technology of integrated pest management system. Digital image processing algorithms were utilized to automatically recognize rice planthoppers which are major insect pests in the rice cultivation field and were subsequently used to estimate densities in the field for efficient forecasting of insect pests. To the images taken in the rice field, image decomposition, top-hat transformation, threshold, and minimum and maximum filter were implemented for patterning individually the brown planthopper specimens attached at the bottom area of rice stems. In average 95.8cio of images were correctly recognized for estimating densities by the developed system, and the recognition rate was higher than that obtained from direct observations by experienced observers. Furthermore, the size of the recognized specimens was measured and was used for estimating the age structure in the observed brown planthopper populations.
