  • Pine wilt disease caused by pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner et Buhrer) Nickle, has become the most serious threat to pine trees in Korea since 1988. Pine wood nematode is transferred to healthy trees by Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) during its maturation feeding and female oviposition. A typical control method against insect vectors in Korea is fumigation of the dead trees by using metam-sodium SL (25%). However, this method is not environment friendly because of the forest contamination by chemical application and destroying landscape by plastic cover. Portable Bark Remover (PBR) was invented to reduce these environmental problems. The vectors oviposit under the bark of the newly dead trees only. Debarking infested trees prevents the vectors from laying eggs and eventually, they can not complete their life cycle. The PBR is a modified debarking device that is attached on the top of the electrical chain saw, which allows ease and rapid debarking of the infested trees. The new method by PBR is expected to be more economic and effective than other conventional methods such as "crushing", "burning" and "fumigation".

  • Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. is a major disease of strawberry plants worldwide. The anthracnose of strawberries in Korea has occurred in most cultivated strawberry varieties since its first report in 1990. Although many studies and efforts have been made to control the disease, anthracnose continues to affect strawberry yields in Korea. In this review, we introduced various management methods to control anthracnose in strawberries, such as identifying pathogens and environmental factors involved in this disease, understanding the importance of latent infection, and developing diagnostic techniques and control methods. Through this review, we propose that researchers can elucidate a comprehensive and practical approach to control anthracnose by understanding this disease and developing strategies to prevent its spread, ultimately benefiting strawberry farmers.

  • This research was carried out to study the effect of mulching materials and weed control methods on weed occurrence and growth of kale on upland and paddy soil of field culture at spring and autumn season. Paddy soil temperature of mulching treatments was high by $0.9{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ in comparison of non-mulching at autumn season. The control value of weed was over 91% at mulch paper and time required for weed control was reduced by 70% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding. The yield of kale was similar to that of conventional culture. Paddy soil temperature of mulch paper was higher on April, but lower on May and June than non-mulching at spring season. Dominant weed was Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum Makino, The control value of weed was over 91% at mulch paper, time required for weed control was reduced by 75% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding and the yield of kale increased by 34% than conventional culture. Dominant weed was Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis Ohwi. on paddy soil at autumn season. The control value of weed was 43% at mulch paper. Time required for weed control was reduced by 80% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding. The yield of kale increased by 26% compared with than of conventional culture.

  • A total of 55 Colletotrichum isolates from strawberry plants with anthracnose symptoms(crown rot) were inhibited in mycelial growth on potato-dextrose agar(PDA) amended with fungicides in variable degrees depending on the chemicals used, especially showing no growth on PDA with 1 mg/m/tricyclazole. However, in the detached leaf test by treating chemicals before or after inoculation of Colletotrichum sp., tricyclazole was little effective in controlling symptom development; instead azoxystrobin, which had low in vitro inhibition of mycelial growth, inhibited strongly the symptom development. Some chemicals were tested for the control of strawberry crown rot in greenhouse using three methods, sprays soil drenching and plant dipping. No or little control effect were made by chemical spray and soil drenching, but plant dipping in chemical solution, especially azoxystrobin: reduced crown rot development by about 50% in the greenhouse suggesting that the azoxystrobin treatment may be an effective control method of the crown rot of strawberry. No differences in the control efficacy were noted according to the dipping time and chemical concentration of azoxystrobin not less than 10 min and 250 mg/m/, respectively.

  • Commercial formulation of fungicides was studied in the golf course for evaluation against Typhula incarnata causal agents of gray snow mold. Efficacies of fungicides application, fungicide mixture, fungicides applied method (irrigation and spray) and fungicides applied time (early fall and late fall) were evaluated for their influence on the chemical control of gray snow mold of turfgrass during the winter season in Yongpyeong golf course, Korea. Unsprayed control has significantly more disease severity than three fungicides (azoxystrobin, propiconazole, and tebuconazole) were applied to field plots. Effect of three fungicides was over 80% with control value for controlling gray snow mold on Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass species. Effect of fungicide mixture with different family groups had an over 93% control value of gray snow mold on Kentucky bluegrass species. It was not significantly difference in fungicidal effect according to applied method (irrigation and spray) with azoxystrobin on Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentrasss species. Effect of fungicides applied time was a significantly difference on disease control by tebconazole early fall spray.

  • This study was conducted to select environmental friendly organic materials for controlling the main disease of Yuzu (Citrus junos Sieb). Meloanose caused by Phomopsi scitri and Scab caused by Elsinoe fawettii are the most common disease in Yuzu. In this study, of which Meloanose disease severity was severe at late of June corresponded with high humidity due to frequent rainfall at that time. In addition, occurrence of two disease have shown in old tree than young. After processing with environmental friendly organic materials, reduction of disease severity was 51~73% and 41~75% in case of Meloanose and scab, respectively. Based on result, environmental friendly organic materials tested in this study may source for controlling both Meloanose and scab diseases on Yuzu.

  • Bakanae Disease is an abnormal plant growth caused by Gibberella fujikuroi. The infected plants several inches taller than normal plants in seedbed and field. To control bakanae disease, we made a seed disinfectant from garlic extract. And we isolated allicin($C_6H_{10}OS_2$) from garlic extract and the content was 0.62%. In order to develop efftive seed disinfectant from Garlic extract, we compared it with three seed disinfectants(benomyl, prochloraz, fludioxonil). Prochloraz, fludioxonil and Garlic wettable powder controlled Bakanae disease of rice very well, while benomyl did not suppress the disease enough. Water temperature was turned to be an important factor for controlling the disease by treating seed disinfectants. It was confirmed that the seed disinfectant from garlic extract can be used as non-toxic agricultural medicines.

  • This study was conducted to develop environmentally friendly control techniques to reduce chestnut insect pests. The study sites were selected in intensive chestnut orchards of Jinju city, Gyeongnam province. In early and middle-ripening cultivars of chestnut tree, the damage of chestnut fruits by Dichocrocis punctiferalis was significantly lower in wromstop than other treatment such as wromstop+wood vinegar, Capture-machine (p<0.05), While there was no significant difference among treatments in late-ripening cultivars. The hight control effect for D. punctiferalis was showed the highest in wromstop treanment with 40.49% and 41.89% in early and late-ripening cultivars. The control effects for Curculio sikkimensis in late-ripening cultivars of chestnut tree were 34.59% in wromstop imidacloprid treatment and 28.94% in air control treatment.
