  • By implementing an analysis on the liquid flame proof agent infiltration of microwave-heated wood under soaking conditions (room temperature soaking, heat soaking), its correlation with wood temperature, and the structure of wood and permeating components after soaking in flame proof agent, which was carried out as basic research in order to improve the fire resistance performance of the wood itself, it is found that the infiltration increases as the microwave heating time increases, while for heat soaking, it is found that high infiltration as well as the stable permeability of flame proof agent is achievable. Also, when the wood temperature is more than $80^{\circ}C$, the infiltration by the flame proof agent increased, and a very even infiltration of flame proof agent was observed, which implies that the liquid flame proof agent has a dependency on temperature change of the wood as a condition to penetrate into the wood. As a result of fine structure analysis, the flame proof agent transfer between cells through pits was considered as a cause to increase the infiltration of flame proof agent, and it is also shown that for heat soaking among the permeating component analysis, as the crystallized flame proof agent around the heartwood and sapwood inner pits increases, the flame proof agent can penetrate into the the heartwood part.

  • As the result of implementing a treated material test and durability test after quickly drying S.P.F. species, a type of softwood structural material, within a short period time, soaking it in liquid phosphate flame proof agent for an hour, microwave heating it, and compressing it from 3.8cm to 1cm, when setting the appropriate heating time of microwave heating at 7 minutes at 5kW, it is observed that it satisfies the target water content (4~5%). It is shown that in a water content measurement of the wood that is compressed after being softened by soaking in the flame proof agent, drying and heating at 3kW for 9 minutes, all specimens satisfied 12~14%, the appropriate water content for exterior wood. Also, it is shown that in terms of the flame performance obtained through a flame resistance treatment of the compressed wood and a treated material test, the specimen soaked in flame proof agent for 30 minutes was the most excellent, and that the performance test result of the compressed wood in all areas, such as nail withdrawal resistance, compression, bending strength, and shearing strength, were all improved in their mechanical features to twice to three times better performances.

  • It was found that test piece heated rapidly by 3 kW microwave for 5 minutes satisfies the targeted temperature and the percentage of moisture content, and the highest rate of weight increase is obtained in case of 120 minute immersion in the mixture of phosphates and heterocyclic compounds, from the result of such analysis as: kiln drying schedule, flame retardent by flammability test, insect resistance by termites, and permeability of combined penetrant for the wood after assigning multifunctional finish by immersing conifer structural frame, which is used for the frame work of wooden house and indoor/outdoor finishing in flame retardant and insect repellent materials mixture with the remaining heat of microwave. In addition, after a test of flame retardent treated item, it was identified that every mixture of phosphates corresponds with the standards of flame retardent, and upon investigation of moritality of 7 days after putting termites, it was showed that test piece immersed in the mixture of phosphates and heterocyclic compounds has the best characteristics, showing over 96% of high moritality. From the analysis of inward permeability of combined penetrant for the wood, it was decided that excellent performance in the flame retardent and insect resistance of the wood revealed due to full penetration of combined penetrant as it was found that combined penetrant penetrated through the whole inner cells of the wood.

  • One of recent methods to protect wooden cultural assets from fire, there is the flame retardation which is applied directly to wood and it is to prevent fire through securing flame resistance for the material and delaying combustion when failed fire in advance and then to gain time for people in the room to evacuate and it has same goal with the Korean Fire Service Act by protecting life and property. However, in case of spraying flame retardant on the colored surface of the wooden cultural assets, there are continuous problems of decoloration, efflorescence and water absorbtion after sometime and accordingly there increases danger of damages of cultural assets. So when treating with flame retardant on wooden cultural assets, there has to be no problems on dancheong after sometime and securing sustainable methods for flmae retardation should be preceded. Accordingly, this study aims to provide basic sources for selecting proper flame retardation methods by evaluating and analyzing flame retardation capabilities according to types of flame retardants which are frequently used nowadays and spraying them on the dancheong-painted surface and confirming if there is no problem on the dancheong and wood after sometime and if flame retardation effect is sustainable with its quality and capability through precise analysis.

  • The combustion characteristic was evaluated for Pinus densiflora, used as a building material in Hanok, which were treated with two different flame retardant method. The specimen was brushed with flame retardant liquid two or three times and then let the specimen dehydrated during 24 h for spreaded treating. And the other specimen was soaked in the liquid for 72 h. The test methods were inflammability test using meker burner and heat release rate test using cone calorimeter. As a result for the tests, flame retardant treated specimens met the requirements of the inflammability and the spreaded treated method was more efficient than immersed method. The spreaded treated specimen had lower combustive properties than immersed specimen in TTI (time to ignition), PHRR (peak heat release rate), MLR (mass loss rate) and THR (total heat release).

  • The study was conducted to find out suitable flame proofing on silk fabrics and to examine closely the flame retardancy effect and the physical properties changes of the silk, which was dyed by natural dyes and synthetic dyes, treated with agent (Diphenylbutylamidophosphate (DPBAP)). The results of the study were as follows: 1) Silk could be treated with DPBAP easily soluble in water by means of simple Pad-Dry-Cure. 2) The add-on of silk fabrics dyed by natural dyes was more than that of silk fabrics dyed by synthetic dyes. 3) The silk fabrics dyed by india ink among natural dyes has more flame retardancy effect in before treating with flame proofing agent than in after treating with it. 4) The physical properties (stiffness and tensile strength) of the silk fabrics treated with flame retardancy agent were little changed.

  • Diphenylpropylamidophosphate(DPPAP) was synthesized as flame retardant for Expanded Polystyrene(EPS). Structure of DPPAP was investigated by the m, NMR, DSC. We make FR panels with EPS beads which treated with DPPAP and expanded by expand machines. FR panels were used in this study after formation by form machines and then cutting by cutting machines. The following conclusions were obtained: 1. The new synthetic agent was developed without the use of solvent such as pyridine or tertiary amine in the synthesis of DPPAP which served as flame retardant for EPS. 2. The flame retandancy effect of EPS treated with DPPAP was found excellent in LOI tests. 3. The properties of FR EPS panels treated with DPPAP did not difference.
