  • In this paper, an RFID system for the automatic preparation system of positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals is developed. Since the preparation system uses radioactive isotope, the preparation system is generally placed in lead-shielded hot-cell. Disposable cassettes including tubes and valves are used in the preparation system, since they are easily contaminated by radioactivity during preparation of radiopharmaceuticals. Currently, a system for preventing re-use of the cassette and managing the information about the preparation precess and result independently from the PC which control the preparation system is highly required for preventing danger from the radiation accident. Since RFID can store and re-write relatively large amount of information, it is suitable for the purpose. However, it is hard to read multiple cassettes' information using antennas installed on the metallic surfaces with current RFID systems. For the problem, we improve RFID system in two directions. First, the interface of the RFID reader is changed then it is possible that multiple readers can be daisy-chained. Also, antenna is tuned while inserting in a metallic coated antenna case, then the effect from the metallic surface of the preparation system is minimized. The test result using the developed system shows that the developed RFID system can read multiple tags using the antennas which are attached on the metallic surface.

  • In this paper, the prototype of one-channel gamma-ray spectroscope for automatic radiopharmaceutical systhesis system was designed and characterized. The prototype employed CZT (CdZnTe) spear detector for gamma-ray detection and employed analog-type signal processing method. A radioactive sample Co-60 was used for measuring performance of the gamma-ray spectroscope and energy spectrum is gained with bandwidth of 1173keV. The analog board is made up of SF (shaping filter) and PHA (peak and hold amplifier) for shaping CZT output signal appropriately and ADC (analog to digital converter) and FPGA (field programmable gate array) for drawing gamma-ray spectrum by counting the digitalized gamma-ray signal data.

  • The germanium-68/gallium-68 (68Ge/68Ga) generator has high spatial utilization and requires little maintenance, making it economical and easy to produce. Thus, the frequency of use of 68Ga radiopharmaceuticals is rapidly increasing worldwide. Therefore, this study attempted to develop an automated synthesizer for the routine clinical application of 68Ga radiopharmaceuticals. The automated synthesizer was based on a fixed tubing system and the structure was designed after adjusting the position of the parts to reflect the synthesis method. Using various components that can be supplied in Korea, the automated synthesizer was manufactured at a much lower price cost than that of a commercialized automated synthesizer sold by companies. 68Ga-DOTA-[Tyr3]-octreotide (68Ga-DOTATOC) was synthesized to evaluate the performance of the automated synthesizer. 68Ga-DOTATOC could be synthesized with about 65% of non-decay corrected yield, and the synthesized 68Ga-DOTATOC met all quality control standards. We have synthesized 68Ga-DOTATOC more than 100 times, and only faced a few problems caused by mechanical errors. In this study, we successfully developed a simple automated synthesizer for 68Ga radiopharmaceuticals with high reproducibility. As various 68Ga radiopharmaceuticals have recently been developed, it is expected that the automated synthesizer developed in this study will be useful for routine clinical use.

  • Intravenous injection is administered with radioactive medical isotopes to detect disease on Positron Emission Tomography (PET). In this case, typically, $^{18}FDG$ (Fluorodeoxyglucose) is used as a radioactive medicine. Cassette equipment is needed to synthesize deoxyglucose with $^{18}F$, produced by medical cyclotron. Production of radioactive medicine creates a lot of radiation, thus Hot Cell is used to shield a secondary radiation. We measured the radiation dosage flowing out of the hot cell during synthesis of $^{18}FDG$ or distribution. The purpose of this study is to provide the information of radiation dosage regarding the occupational exposure that unintentionally occurs during the synthesis of $^{18}FDG$. In conclusion, we confirmed the radiation dosage out of the hot cell during the $^{18}FDG$ synthesis. Especially, we observed that the radiation flowed out through the lead window, attached as a view port. Thus, it is considered that the improvement of a lead window is necessary in order to decrease the occupational exposure during the $^{18}FDG$ synthesis.
