  • Dissolution of magnetite powders by 0.05 M citric acid was investigated at $50^{\circ}C$. All the tests were performed in the pH range between 2.0 to 5.0, which was adjusted using nitric acid or sodium hydroxide. Concentration of each of the dissociated chemical species of citric acid under various solution pHs was calculated using the ionization constants. Variation of zeta potential of magnetite with pH changes was also investigated. The dissolution reaction was explained by comparing the concentration of the dissociated chemical species of citric acid with the zeta potential. Longer than 3 h of induction time was required to dissolve the magnetite. The dissolution behaviour of magnetite was well described by the equation. The physical meaning of each parameter was explained successfully from the model equation.

  • Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company(KHNP) conducted site investigations for a low and intermediate-level nuclear waste repository in the Gyeong Ju site. The site characterization work constitutes a description of the site, its regional setting and the current state of the geosphere and biosphere. The main objectives of hydogeological investigation aimed to understand the hydrogeological setting and conditions of the site, and to provide the input parameters for safety evaluation. The hydogeological characterization of the site was performed from the results of surface based investigations, i.e geological mapping and analysis, drilling works and hydraulic testing, and geophysical survey and interpretation. The hydro-structural model based on the hydrogeological characterization consists of one-Hydraulic Soil Domain, three-Hydraulic Rock Domains and five-Hydraulic Conductor Domains. The hydrogeological framework and the hydraulic values provided for each hydraulic unit over a relevant scale were used as the baseline for the conceptualization and interpretation of flow modeling. The current hydrogeological characteristics based on the surface based investigation include some uncertainties resulted from the basic assumption of investigation methods and field data. Therefore, the reassessment of hydrostructure model and hydraulic properties based on the field data obtained during the construction is necessitated for a final hydrogeological characterization.

  • Leaching of $^{54}Mn$, $^{60}Co$, $^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ in paddy soil was studied using lysimeter cultures in a greenhouse. The radionuclides were applied to the water surfaces shortly before transplanting and five different times between transplanting and harvest. Fertilizer KCl and slaked lime were added simultaneously in the rate of 83kg and 200kg, respectively, per l0a following the first application after transplanting. Percolating water was sampled until two days before harvest. Concentrations of the radionuclides in percolating water decreased in the order of $^{85}Sr$ > $^{54}Mn$ > $^{60}Co$ > $^{137}Cs$ on the whole. Time taken to reach the maximum was the shortest for $^{137}Cs$(< one week) and the longest for $^{54}Mn$ and $^{85}Sr$. Six days' water dropping started 47 days after transplanting reduced the concentrations of $^{54}Mn$, $^{60}Co$, $^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ by factors of 30-180, 3-75, 2-4 and 3-6, respectively, depending on the application time. After the significant decrease, $^{54}Mn$ concentration tended to gradually increase but $^{137}Cs$ did to the contrary Percent leaching varied 0.09-6.2% for $^{54}Mn$, 0.009-0.9% for $^{60}Co$, 1.4-14.4% for $^{85}Sr$ and 0.002-0.06% for $^{137}Cs$, with the application time. The highest leaching came from the application at 40 days after transplanting for all the radionuclides. The addition of KCl and lime increased percent leaching of the radionuclides by factors of 9, 85, 4 and 9, respectively.

  • This paper shows our experiment is performed to understand the exposure tendency of $^{137}Cs$ according to the height of area and also, to supplement it by considering chemical characters of $^{137}Cs$ exposed to the soil. The samples we use for this experiment are from the general flat area of Yeonggwang county where it has NPPs, the high places of Keumjung & Bulgap mountains, and Naejan mountain where it is quite far from the NPPs. The data from this experiment show that the exposure of $^{137}Cs$ is not harmful since its range is around 252 Bq/kg-dry in most of sampled soils such as from the general flat area, the high place of Keumjung mountain where is 2 km away from the NPPs, the other high place of Bulgap mountain where is about 20 km away from the NPPs, and Naejan mountain where it is far from the NPPs. Not like the general flat area, however, the data show that the higher the area is the more $^{137}Cs$ is exposed. That is, at the top of mountains, the more $^{137}Cs$ is exposed compared to at the bottom area. It is almost $2{\~}6$ times more than the general flat area of Yeonggwang county where it has NPPs. The data also show that the spread of $^{137}Cs$ is deeply related to the geographical(the height of area, rainfall, etc..) factors and chemical factors of soils. As the geographical factors, there are far more chances to be exposed of $^{137}Cs$ at the high area of mountains through the air compared to at lower area and therefore, we can get more high-leveled readings of $^{137}Cs$ at the high area while it is low-leveled ones at the general flat area even if both of them have the same soil conditions. Regarding the chemical factors of soil, it is clarified that the CEC is the key factor. The CEC means the capability of sticking $^{137}Cs$ accumulated into the soil. Hence, the more CEC it has the more high-leveled readings of $^{137}Cs$ we get under the same geographical condition.

  • An accurate and rapid analytical technique of uranium isotopes in highly contaminated soil samples was developed and validated by application to the IAEA-Reference samples. For overcoming the demerits of the TBP extraction method, sample materials were decomposited with $HNO_3$ and HF, and uranium isotopes were purified by an anion exchange resin and a TRU Spec resin. With the extraction chromatography method, the hindrance elements were completely removed from the uranium fraction. The chemical yields with the extraction chromatography method were more 10% higher than those with the TBP extraction method. The concentrations of uranium isotopes in soil samples using the extraction chromatography method were consistent with the reference values reported by the IAEA.

  • A benzene synthesizer was manufactured and has been used for the treatment of the various samples such as wood, charcoal, shell and soil for radiocarbon dating using liquid scintillation counter. The experimental conditions were optimized in each successive step of the synthesis of carbon dioxide, acetylene and the final product of benzene. Fifteen hours operation of the benzene synthesizer leads to product yields consistently in excess of 85% based on the content of calcium carbonate for the organic samples. Purity of the synthesized benzene was measured to be more than 99.9% by GC/MS.

  • A large amount of radioactively-contaminated gravel can be produced on the demolition/restoration of facilities related the back end of fuel cycle. However, because of the lacking in basic knowledge for decontamination of radioactive-contami-nated gravel, this study has performed the basic tests using for soil-washing. To find effective decontamination condition, several experiments were carried out for the selection of optimal decontamination agents. Washing by 0.1 M nitric acid was proved to be more effective than that by distilled water or surfactant for decontamination of uranium-contaminated gravel. In addition, crushing/grinding of uranium-contaminated gravel prior to washing was contributed to increase in of removal efficiency of uranium and reduction of decontamination time. The smaller the sizes of crushed gravel was, the more the removal efficiency increased. Also, small the sized particles improved chances for meeting the clearance requirement of the treated gravel.

  • A model for evaluating radioactive contamination in the urban environment, named METRO-K, was developed as a basic step for accident consequence analysis in case of an accidental release. The three kind of radionuclides $(^{137}Cs,\;^{106}Ru,\;^{131}I)$ and the different chemical forms of iodine (particulate, organic and elemental forms) are considered in the model. The radioactive concentrations are evaluated for the five types of surface (roof, paved road, wall, lawn/soil, tree) as a function of time. Using the model, the contaminative impacts of the surfaces were intensively investigated with respect to with and without precipitation during the measurement periods of radionuclides in air. In addition, a practical application study was conducted using $^{137}Cs$ concentration in air and precipitation measured in an European country at the Chernobyl accident. As a result precipitation was an influential factor in surface contamination. The degree of contamination was strongly dependent on the types of radionuclide and surface. Precipitation was more influential in contamination of $^{137}Cs$ than that of $^{131}I$ (elemental form).

  • To measure the soil-to-plant transfer factors ($TF_a,\;m^2\;kg^{-1}$-fresh) of radionuclides deposited during the growing season of potato, a radioactive solution containing $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ was applied to the soil surfaces in soil boxes 2 d before seeding and three different times during the plant growth. For the pre-seeding application (PSA), radionuclides were mixed with the topsoil (loamy sand and 5.2 in pH). The plant parts investigated were leaves, stems, tuber skin and tuber flesh. The $TF_a$ values of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ from the PSA were in the ranges of $1.9{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.5{\times}10^{-2}$, $1.8{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.5{\times}10^{-4}$, $4.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.6{\times}10^{-2}$, $1.5{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}3.9{\times}10^{-4}$ respectively, for different plant parts. The TFa values from the growing-time applications were on the whole a few times lower than those from the PSA. For $^{54}Mn,\;^{85}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$, the $TF_a$ values from the early- or middle-growth-stage application were higher than those from the late-growth-stage application, whereas the opposite was true for $^{60}Co$. Leaves and tuber flesh had the highest and lowest $TF_a$ values, respectively, in most cases. The total uptake from soil by the four plant parts was in the range of $0.05{\sim}3.16%$. In the third year following the PSA, the $TF_a$ values of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ were $11{\sim}25%$, $21{\sim}25%$ and $38{\sim}67%$ of those in the first year, respectively, depending on the plant parts. The present results can be used for estimating the radiological impact of an acute radioactive deposition during the growing season of potato and for testing the validity of relevant food-chain models.
