  • The spontaneous ignition of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC) was investigated at constant ambient temperature in the oven and minimum ignition temperature of dust clouds with Godbret-Creenwald Furnace respectively, In the experiments of the vessel filled with sample. the larger the vessel was the lower the spontaneous ignition temperature and ambient temperature was calculated from the Frank-Kamenetskii thermal ignition theory. The minimum ignition temperature for the dust cloud state was found under 21% oxygen concentration. At the experiment with the change of oxygen concentration, HPMC was not ignite at 10% $O_2$and so the limiting oxygen concentration was obtained at 10%.

  • Uses of fossil fuels like coal and oil increases with industrial development, and problems like abnormal climate come up as greenhouse gas increases. Accordingly, studies are actively conducted on eco-friendly renewable energy as a replacement for the main resources, and especially, wood pellets with high thermal efficiency are in the limelight as an alternative fuel in thermal power stations and gas boilers. However, despite a constant increase in their usage, few studies are conducted on their risks like fire and spontaneous combustion. Thus, this study found the auto-ignition temperature and critical ignition temperature of wood pellets with a change in flow rate in a thermostatic bath, using a sample vessel with 20 cm in length, 20 cm in height and 14 cm in thickness to predict their ignition characteristics. Consequently, at the flow rate of 0 NL/min, as the core temperature of the sample increased to higher than the ambient temperature, they ignited at $153^{\circ}C$, when the critical ignition temperature was $152.5^{\circ}C$. At the flow rates of 0.5 NL/min and 1.0 NL/min, it was $149.5^{\circ}C$, and at the flow rate of 1.5 NL/min, it was $147.5^{\circ}C$. Consequently, at the same storage, the more the flow rate, the lower the critical ignition temperature became.

  • For the safe handling of cyclohexane, the explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of the explosion limits were investigated. Flash point and AIT(autoignition temperature) for cyclohexane were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of cyclohexane recommended 1.0 Vol% and 9.0 Vol%, respectively. Moreover lower flash points of cyclohexane recommended $-20^{\circ}C$. It was measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for cyclohexane, and the experimental AIT was $255^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of cyclohexane is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • While wood pellets are often used as a fuel in thermoelectric power plants and firewood boilers, there is a risk of ignition temperature when strong wood pellets, which have a high calorific value, for prolonged periods of time. In this research study, the minimum auto ignition temperature and the ignition limitation temperature according to the change in flow rate depending on the size of the test vessel were calculated, and based on these temperatures, the apparent activation energy was calculated to predict the combustive properties of the material. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 190.224 kJ/mol. The thicker the sample is storage in the vessel, the longer the ignition induction time was due to the increased difficulty in heat being transferred from the surface of the vessel to the middle section area of the vessel. For vessel of the same size, the higher the flow rate, the lower the auto ignition temperature was. It was also confirmed that increases in the size of the test vessel lowered the auto ignition temperature and increased the ignition induction time.

  • This study is conducted on spontaneous ignition temperature and activation energy of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose(HMC) powder. HMC is a kind of cellulose derivative and used as additives for building material, surface coating, printing ink, adhesives, cosmetics and medical supplies. So this material has been widely used as important additive in the chemical industry fields and a mount of production has increased year by year. Therefore, it is very important to find out the thermal ignition characteristics of its danger and the critical ignition temperature. This study was performed by the Spontaneous Ignition Tester(SIT) and so on. Based on the data of the SIT-II, the critical ignition point of HMC is about $186^{\circ}C$ which is slightly lower than normal cellulose.

The flash points and AITs(auto-ignition temperatures) by ignition delay time were experimented. The lower flash points of acrylic acid by using Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were experimented in $48^{\circ}C$ and $51^{\circ}C$, respectively. The lower flash points of arylic acid by using Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were experimented in $56^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659 tester for acrylic acid. The AIT of acrylic acid was experimented as $417^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit(LEL) and the upper explosion limit(UEL) by the measured the lower flash point and the upper flash point of acrylic acid were calculated as 2.2 Vol% and 7.9 Vol%, respectively.
