  • This study performed to investigate the propagation characteristics of overpressure, impulse, vibration in underwater blasting. The difference between air blasting and underwater blasting is that noise and vibration propagate through water as a medium. In some cases, the noise and vibration propagates through various media (rock, water, air, etc.). In this study, the underwater blasting was simulated using AUTODYN, and the propagation characteristics of overpressure, impulse and vibration induced by blasting were analyzed. We mainly focused on the effect of mesh size on the overpressure, impulse and peak particle velocity from the underwater blasting simulation. The numerical results indicated that the overpressure and peak particle velocity tended to decrease as the mesh size increased, while the impulse increased with the mesh size. The results also indicated that the mesh dependence varied depending on the explosive charge and scaled distance.

  • Recently Honam high-speed railroad line is constructed in southern part of Korea. This line is for next generation HST named HEMU-430X. But there is a limestone mine near this line and this mine will make a process to dig a passageway under the railway line. In this case, safety of railroad system and stability of mine are crucial problems on both sides. By measuring mine blasting vibration and calculating regression equation, effect of mine blasting to train running is investigated quantitatively. 0.5 kine (cm/sec) is applied as a management specification of vibration based on field measurement. In this study, changes of blasting patterns are suggested to control vibration of mine blasting. And the effect of train vibration to mine is also invesitigated by numerical analysis.

  • Since the blast vibration induced by explosives of the powder possibly provide damage of the nearby structures adjacent to the tunnel, the stability of the nearby structures should be estimated. In this study, the stability of the tunnel based on the allowable peak particle velocity of the structures as well as allowable stress of the structures presented in the concrete structural design standard was estimated with respect to the stress of the concrete lining and axial force of the rockbolt during the blasting operation at the ground surface of the pre-existing tunnel. The analyses were carried out by using $FLAC^{2D}$ which is one of the programs developed based on the finite difference method. The bending compressive stress and shear stress of the concrete lining and axial force of the rockbolt were rapidly increased when the blasting operation was conducted near the tunnel.

  • Recently, the utilization of underground space for research facilities and resource development has been on the rise, expanding development from shallow to deep underground. The establishment of deep underground spaces necessitates a thorough examination of rock stability under conditions of elevated stress and temperature. In instances of greater depth, the stability is influenced not only by the geological structure and discontinuity of rock but also by the propagation of ground vibrations resulting from earthquakes and rock blasting during excavation, causing stress changes in the underground cavity and impacting rock stability. In terms of blasting engineering, empirical regression models and numerical analysis methods are used to predict ground vibration through statistical regression analysis based on measured data. In this study, single-hole blasting was conducted, and the pressure of the blast hole and observation hole and ground vibration were measured. Based on the experimental results, the blast pressure blasting vibration at a distance, and the response characteristics of the tunnel floor, side walls, and ceiling were analyzed.

  • The effects of ground vibration on lava tubes during construction were studied to aid design of management and preservation measures for lava tubes. Ground conditions were assessed by RMR (Rock mass rating) and Q-system classifications for the Geomunoreum lava tubes, and vibration velocity was measured during in situ blasting tests in the Manjanggul and Yongcheondonggul lava tubes. Results indicate that the higher the rock quality, the greater the effect of vibration, although there is no clear linear relationship due to ground heterogeneity. A relationship derived between vibration velocity (PPV) and intensity (dB(V)) on the basis of blasting tests indicates that a vibration level of < 0.285 cm/sec meets the regulatory limit of 0.371 cm/sec and 65 dB(V) during daytime, and 0.285 cm/sec and 60 dB(V) during night. For blasting vibrations, square- and cube-root scaled distances are linearly correlated, with R2 ≥ 0.76. On the basis of this correlation, explosive-charge weights meeting the 0.2 cm/sec vibration criterion for cultural heritage were estimated to be 2.88 kg at 50 m distance, and 11.52 kg at 100 m.

  • Ground vibration is one of the remarkable issues in tunnel blasting. In recent studies, to improve the fragmentation with reduction of ground vibration in tunnel blasting, a vibration-controlled blasting method with artificial cutting slot near the center-cut holes has been suggested. This study examines the effect of the different arrangement of artificial cut-slot on the vibration reduction and fragmentation by performing the full-scaled concrete block blast experiments and the numerical simulations with 3D-DFPA. The results show that the existence of artificial slot contributes to the improvement of vibration reduction, blast fragmentation and the efficiency of the cutting slot blast. It can be explained that the artificial slot play a free surface role and should decrease the burden between the cut holes. Crater volumes of the blasted concrete blocks were measured by 3-dimensional digital image analysis and compared with the ideal standard crater volume which can be calculated by theoretical standard blast design method. As a result, the ratio of burden and hole diameter which should achieve the standard crater in the cut-hole blasting were suggested.

  • Recently as increasing the amounts of cargoes and passengers, it is necessary to improving railway capacity and speed. So the constructions of improving the existing railway line have been advanced. Sometimes the new railway tunnel is built to adjacent the existing railway line. Furthermore the new tunnel might be built near the existing facility within the tunnel width. In this case, it should be analyzed the influence of existing tunnel and if it is necessary, it should be taken the appropriate counterplan. The major analysis contents are follows. One is the influence on the existing tunnel by a blasting and train vibration and the other is stability problem of the existing tunnel by excavation of new tunnel. Therefore, we peformed the following analysis. Refer to a domestic and foreign standard and paper, the permitting level of blasting vibration is decided and the excavation plan of the new tunnel are designed. The numerical analysis is performed about the stability of the existing tunnel and new tunnel. The influence of the train vibration on tunnel is analyzed by the empirical equation.

  • The numerical investigation for the effects of blasting-induced vibration on adjacent dam and pore water pressure fluctuation was conducted through solid-water coupled analysis under dynamic loading. The stability of dam was examined by peak particle velocity of core. Pore water pressure distributions were calculated by steady state flow analysis using coupled analysis on ground water and blasting-induced vibration. The influence of pore water pressure and the effective stress distribution in the ground were also investigated. Furthermore, effective stress alteration was examined by applying Finn & Byrne Model to monitor the generation and dissipation of pore water pressure.

  • Presently, working gas pipelines are being subjected to the influence of construction vibration. Especially on subway and road construction, gas pipelines are being influenced to construction vibration caused by use of construction equipment, passage of a large-sized vehicle and blasting. Buried gas pipelines are subjected to the influence of vibration caused by blast in the vicinity of pipeline, exposed gas pipelines are subjected to the influence of vehicle vibration. Therefore, in the study, it is developed to vibration prediction program of gas pipeline by analyzing measured construction vibration. This program is able to predict vibration of gas pipeline according to field conditions by using the results of structural finite element analysis and empirical equation by reliability analysis. And, this program contains the database of construction vibration. Additionally, this program is able to compute estimated blast vibration equation using measured blast vibration data in the field and to form graph of allowable charging gunpowder per delayed-action with the change of blast velocity. Therefore, field workers are able to predict construction vibration around gas pipeline and estimate safety of gas pipeline.
