  • This paper presents a case study on foreign language learning applications based on the speech recognition technology, aiming to grasp their current status and limitations of the technology applied to the foreign language speaking education, especially for English and French. As a result of examining the characteristics of the selected English and French applications by drawing on speech learning, it is shown that the use of speech recognition technology has the advantage of creating a speaking practice environment and giving feedback. However, in the case of feedback, there is a lack of appropriate calibration feedback which can help learners correct errors by themselves.

  • In this paper, we have developed the Auto Lip-Sync Maya plug-in for extracting Korean phonemes from voice data and text information based on Korean and produce high quality 3D lip-sync animation using divided phonemes. In the developed system, phoneme separation was classified into 8 vowels and 13 consonants used in Korean, referring to 49 phonemes provided by Microsoft Speech API engine SAPI. In addition, the pronunciation of vowels and consonants has variety Mouth Shapes, but the same Viseme can be applied to some identical ones. Based on this, we have developed Auto Lip-sync Maya Plug-in based on Python to enable lip-sync animation to be implemented automatically at once.

  • T. Nakai, who wrote Flora of Koreana vol. II in 1911, cited V. L. Komarov's collections and listed more than 120 specimens with ca. 65 localities. All collection sites cited were described in the Romanized characters based on the Russian pronunciation. Therefore, it is very difficult to pinpoint those sites using the current or old version of Korean map. From this study, many names were reviewed based on other studies (both the Russian version and the Japanese translated version) and records (e.g. specimen label) and presented based on the current provinces with local names, the Chinese character, the GPS data and the first page of citation.

  • In this research, we analyze chatting language of elementary school students, present the properties which are a result of this analysis and propose the method to solve it. Analysis on the chatting language considering organic relation of sentences is classified into syntactic, semantic and statistical characteristics. As a result of analysis, new characteristics is discovered writing by the way children pronounce their words, writing by switching the order of syllable's frontal and rear ends, inarticulate conversation of the other man. To minimize language misuse and to establish a chatting culture that is favorable to the development of children's emotional development, we propose the methods of computer system.

  • In this paper, we study the performance eualuations of the FDDI Network, by mathmeticlal analysis and simulation, in which the Integrated Voice/Data transmission system with voice traffic in synchronous mode and data traffic inasynchronous mode. For the mean waiting times of Voice/Data packet, we use two-state of Marcov models for voice traffic with talkspurt and silenci state, and the data traffic would traffic would transmit at the silence state of voice traffic. By the mean wating times, we analyze the relations between synchronous and asynchronous mode. As a result, using Sync/Async mode with voice and data, voice was not under influnece of data traffic. and in the same time, data can be tanaxmitted in a short waiting time, too.

  • The convergence of mobile communications and handheld computers offers the opportunity to develop technology that will assist individuals and groups to learn anytime, anywhere. In this thesis, we suggest a learning model for educational mobile contents, and implement a mobile contents for English vocabulary learning. The mobile contents consist of two parts: vocabulary learning and vocabulary evaluation. The vocabulary learning provides the mobile learner not only the display of English vocabulary but also the pronunciation of native speaker. The degree of learning achievement is evaluated by the quiz program of game style. Accordingly, the proposed prototype system for English vocabulary learning is designed and implemented, as an exemplar of personal mobile systems for edutainment mobile learning.

  • In this paper, we set 6 interesting points around lips. Analyzed and characterized is the distance change of these 6 interesting points when people pronounces 5 vowels of Korean language. 450 data are gathered and analyzed. Based on this analysis, the system is constructed and the recognition experiments are performed. In this system, we used the camera connected to computer to measure the distance vector between 6 interesting points. In the experiment, 80 normal persons were sampled. The observational error between samples was corrected using normalization method. We analyzed with 30 persons and experimented with 50 persons. We constructed three recognition systems and of those the neural net system gave the best recognition result of 87.44 %.

  • This experimental study aims at understanding the Korean subjects' phonemic awareness in the English minimal pairs. For the purpose of the experiment, English listening comprehension tests were designed using minimal pairs and conducted among subjects, and the results of the tests were analyzed with the help of spectrogram. From the results of this study, I could find out three important things: First, subjects have difficulty in understanding and distinguishing English vowel minimal pairs. Second, among the English vowel minimal pairs, they had much difficulty in distinguishing between /ə:/ and /ɔ:/. Third, subjects could recognize the semivowel /w/ in words without any difficulty. In addition to this, I tried to analyze the results using the spectrogram, which helps to educate students effectively.

  • In this paper, an emotion recognition method using speech signal is presented. Six basic human emotions including happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and dislike are investigated. The proposed recognizer have each codebook constructed by using the wavelet transform for the emotional state. Here, we first verify the emotional state at each filterbank and then the final recognition is obtained from a multi-decision method scheme. The database consists of 360 emotional utterances from twenty person who talk a sentence three times for six emotional states. The proposed method showed more 5% improvement of the recognition rate than previous works.

  • This study explores the effects of an video-recording English speaking task model on learners. The learning model, a form of mobile learning, was developed to facilitate the learners' output practice applying advantages of a smartphone and Text-to Speech. The survey results shows the positive effects of the speaking task on the domain of pronunciation, speaking, listening, writing in terms of students' confidence, as well as general English ability. The study further examines the possibilities and limitations of the speaking task in assisting Korean learners improve their speaking ability, who do not have sufficient exposure to English input or output practice due to the situational limitations where English is learned as a foreign language.
