  • This study was designed to explore whether the temperament of a child influences the physical growth. The Korean version of the Parent Questionnaire for Children developed by Thomas, Chess and Korn was applied to 395 Korean children whose ages ranged from 3 years to 7 years. Simultaneously the height and the weight were measured for each child and converted into percentile scale according to the Growth Curve and the Weight Percentile Table for the Height of Korean children. Statistical analysis was performed among 9 temperamental categories, height and weight percentiles for the age and weight percentiles for the height using the first-order partial correlation analysis, controlling for the familial mean income per month. Results showed that the more temperamentally difficult a child is, the lower weight he has when compared with the children of the same age or the same height. Although there were some differences, the tendency of the above findings was maintained both in male and female children. These results show that the temperament may influence the physical growth as well as the psychological development.

  • Experiments were conducted to determined the development of the vascular bundles in the peduncle of different tillers on its development in order to improve the vascular system and possibly increase grain yield. The development of the vascular bundle in the leaf, stem and panicle is an important aspect of assimilate translocation and differentiation of panicle characters. Two cultivars were used in this study: IR58, an indica type, and Unbong 7, a japonica type. The main culm(M) had more and bigger vascular bundles in the peduncle and those vascular bundle decreased with tiller order and tiller development. In the primary tillers, P1 had more large and small vascular bundles than P5 in both cultivars. IR58 developed more large vascular bundles compared to Unbong 7, but the small vascular bundle in unbong 7 was more than in IR58. The cross sectional area of phloem and xylem in large vascular bundle decreased with tiller order in both cultivar. Larger area of phloem and xylem in the early formed tillers more efficient transport of assimilates. The number of spikelets, the weight of panicle and grain yield per panicle were highest in the main culm followed by the order of their initiation or emergence. The number of primary and secondary branches to be positive associated with the number and area of vascular bundles. Furthermore, the number of vascular bundles in the peduncle was highly correlated with the peduncle thickness which in turn was correlated with the number of primary and secondary branches on the panicle. These results showed tillers that are initiated early and have relatively ation usually have more vascular bundles, larger peduncle, more spikelets spike let filling and ultimately higher yield.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the developmental characteristics of cabbage armyworm, Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by different temperatures and its seasonal occurrence in pepper field. Under four constant temperatures, 15, 20, 22 and $25^{\circ}C$, developmental periods from egg to adult were 88.3, 63.0, 52.3, and 42.8 days, respectively, with egg periods being 9.2, 6.2, 5.0 and 3.9 days, and larval periods being 40.5, 30.1, 23.3 and 21.2 days, respectively. Developmental threshold and thermal requirement in degree-days (DD) were $7.9^{\circ}C$ and 69.4 DD for egg, $4.8^{\circ}C$ and 434.8 DD for larva and $6.7^{\circ}C$ and 344.8 DD for pupa. Fecundity of female increased as temperature increased laying 1262.1 eggs at $15^{\circ}C$, 1663.8 eggs at $20^{\circ}C$ and 1763.2 eggs at $25^{\circ}C$. Mean numbers of eggs per egg-mass were 99.4, 114.7 and 167.9 under the three constant temperatures, respectively. In Daegwallyeong highland area, this noctuid occurred from mid June to late August and has two generations a year reaching peak two times, one at late June and the other at early August.

  • This study aimed to understand the physiological status of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua at low developmental threshold temperature (LTT) through analysis of gene-expression patterns associated with different functions (metabolism, nervous system, immune, and stress). The estimated LTTs for egg, larval, and pupal developments varied with $5.5{\sim}11.6^{\circ}C$. Larvae were able to develop at the lower temperatures than eggs and pupae. However, the physiological LTT ($15^{\circ}C$) in the fifth instar was much higher than the estimated LTT ($10.3^{\circ}C$). Gene expression patterns estimated by a quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) indicate that most genes in different functional groups increased their expressions with increase of larval instars. In the same fifth instar, as the treatment temperatures increased, the gene expression levels increased. Moreover, the newly molted fifth instar larvae were different in their gene expression rates according to their previous culturing temperatures. Most gene expressions were suppressed in the fifth instar larvae at the physiological LTT ($15^{\circ}C$). However, the larvae at $15^{\circ}C$ gradually exhibited significant increase in the gene expression rates with rearing time just like those at the higher temperature. These results suggest that S. exigua at LTT exhibits a typical gene expression pattern with maintaining significantly suppressed levels.

  • Two Psyllidae species of Cacopsylla pyricola (Foerster) and C. pyrisuga (Foerster)damaging pear trees have been reported in Korea. However, their ecological characteristics and damagepatterns have not been evaluated yet. To establish basic control measures of C. pyricola, field phenology, overwintering ecology, seasonal fluctuation and temperature-dependent development of C. pyricola wereexamined. C. pyricola overwintered under the bark scale of pear trees as winter form adults and theymoved to fruiting twigs from mid-February. Honeydew produced by C. pyricola nymphs and adults asthey feed caused serious black sooty mold on leaves and fruits. The seasonal occurrence of C. pyricolawas different every year. In 1993, characterized by cold temperature and heavy precipitation, C. pyricolapopulation was maintained highly during growing season. However, the population was decreased rapidlyfrom early July in 1994, year of hot and dry weather condition. In 1995, year of average temperature, thedensity of C. pyricola population was decreased during hot months of July and August, and rebuilt up inSeptember and October. The development periods of C. pyricola eggs were 13.33 days at 15"C, 9.32 daysat 20$^{\circ}$C, 7.82 days at 25"C, 6.60 days at 30$^{\circ}$C, and 7.75 days at 35$^{\circ}$C. The development periods ofnymphs were 33.75 days at 15OC, 23.77 days at 20$^{\circ}$C, 15.21 days at 25"C, and 17.40 days at 30$^{\circ}$C. Theirdevelopment periods and mortalities were increased in higher temperatures. The parameters of nonlineardevelopment model, Weibull and linear development models of Cacopsylla pyricola were estimated.models of Cacopsylla pyricola were estimated.

  • We investigated the developmental characteristics of super mealworm (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) at four different temperatures (25℃, 27℃, 30℃, and 33℃). The rearing conditions were 9L/15D, 65% RH, and 1,330 to 1,800 lux with wheat bran. The length of developmental period of 1 to 18 instars at each temperature showed that 30℃ was the shortest at 120.0±5.8 days, compared to that at 27℃ (132.6±10.7 days), 33℃ (136.5±9.2 days), and 25℃ (156.7±7.5 days). The larval developmental period was statistically significantly longer at 25℃, 27℃, and 30℃ compared to the length at 33℃. However, the death rate of larvae at 33℃ was 2.7-3.3 times higher than the rate at other temperatures. Body weight was heaviest at 30℃ followed by 27℃, 33℃, and 25℃. The patterns of head capsule, body capsule, and body length were similar to that of body weight. Regression analyses of developmental period, larval body weight, and length according to temperature revealed 29-30℃ as the most suitable temperature. The prepupa rate was 43.1% in 17 instars, 30.3% in 18 instars, 15.4% in 16 instars, 7.1% in 19 instars, 2.2% in 15 instars, and 1.9% in 20 instars, accounting for 88.8% in 16-18 instars. Prepupal period was longer at lower temperatures. For the average prepupal period of 15-18 instars, prepupa time was 18.8±1.9 days at 27℃, 18.8±2.3 days at 30℃, 23.0±2.4 days at 33℃, and 23.1±2.9 days at 25℃. The average pupal period of females and males was 11.1±2.2 and 11.6±2.4 days, respectively. The data indicate that the most suitable rearing temperature of super mealworm was 30℃.
