  • Temperature-related parameters of Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acarina: Tetranychidae) development were estimated and a stage-structured matrix model was developed. The lower threshold temperatures were estimated as $8.4^{\circ}C$ for eggs, $9.9^{\circ}C$ for larvae, $9.2^{\circ}C$ for protonymphs, and $10.9^{\circ}C$ for deutonymphs. Thermal constants were 113.6, 29.1, 29.8, and 33.4 degree days for eggs, larvae, protonymphs, and deutonymphs, respectively. Non-linear development models were established for each stage of P. citri. In addition, temperature-dependent total fecundity, age-specific oviposition rate, and age-specific survival rate models were developed for the construction of an oviposition model. P. citri age was categorized into five stages to construct a matrix model: eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs and adults. For the elements in the projection matrix, transition probabilities from an age class to the next age class or the probabilities of remaining in an age class were obtained from development rate function of each stage (age classes). Also, the fecundity coefficients of adult population were expressed as the products of adult longevity completion rate (1/longevity) by temperature-dependent total fecundity. To evaluate the predictability of the matrix model, model outputs were compared with actual field data in a cool early season and hot mid to late season in 2004. The model outputs closely matched the actual field patterns within 30 d after the model was run in both the early and mid to late seasons. Therefore, the developed matrix model can be used to estimate the population density of P. citri for a period of 30 d in citrus orchards.

  • This study evaluated critical factors influencing the success of regenerative endodontic treatment for necrotic immature permanent teeth. The study enrolled patients who had regenerative endodontic treatment in a necrotic immature permanent tooth through 1-year follow-up. Possible explanatory variables related to the success rates for 46 teeth were age, gender, dental stage at the initial appointment, etiology, treatment information, and clinical and radiographic outcomes. The dental stage at the time of regenerative endodontic treatment did not influence the success rate. The success rate was significantly related to the etiology of the necrotic immature tooth. The success rate according to etiology decreased in the following order: dens evaginatus, caries, and trauma. There was also a significant difference according to the type of antimicrobial. The success rate was influenced by appropriate disinfection of the root canal system, provision of a scaffold, and coronal sealing. Above all, careful case selection is necessary for treating a necrotic immature permanent tooth, especially in cases of trauma.

  • This study was carried out in the laboratory to clarify effects of different temperature of Protopulvinaria mangiferae(Green) on development, survivorship and reproduction. Developmental period of the mango shieldscale from crawlers to preoviposition adult decreased as temperature increased. The threshold temperature andthermal constants for the development of one generation were 11.7"C and 1000.0 day-degrees, respectively. At25$^{\circ}$C and 30$^{\circ}$C, survival rate from egg to preoviposition adult were 82% and 6096, respectively. Hatchability ofeggs was more than 99% at both condition. The reproductive period overaged 50 days(2SnC) and 33 days(30$^{\circ}$C). After mature adult began to reporduce, and more than 50% of the crawlers emerged during the firsthalf of their life time. The net reproduction rate per generation(R), mean length of a generation0 and intrinsicrate of natural increase(r, ) were higher at 25$^{\circ}$C than at 30"C, and the values measured at 25$^{\circ}$C were 132.6, 76.2 and 0.064/female/day, respectively.

  • The developmental times of mealworm beetle larvae, Tenebrio molitor were studied at six temperatures ranging from 15 to $30^{\circ}C$ with 60~70% RH, and a photoperiod of 14L:10D. Mortality of larval period was very low at 17 and $20^{\circ}C$ but did not die over $22^{\circ}C$. Developmental time of larva was decreased with increasing temperature. The total developmental time of T. molitor larvae was longest at $17^{\circ}C$ (244.3 days) and shortest at $30^{\circ}C$ (110.8 days). Egg and larvae were not developed at $15^{\circ}C$. The lower developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperatures for the total larval stages were $6.0^{\circ}C$ and 2564.1 degree-days, respectively. The relationship between developmental rate and temperature was fitted by a linear model and nonlinear model of Logan-6($r^2$=0.95). The distribution of completion of each development stage was well described by the 2-parameter Weibull function ($r^2$=0.8502~0.9390).

  • Two Psyllidae species of Cacopsylla pyricola (Foerster) and C. pyrisuga (Foerster)damaging pear trees have been reported in Korea. However, their ecological characteristics and damagepatterns have not been evaluated yet. To establish basic control measures of C. pyricola, field phenology, overwintering ecology, seasonal fluctuation and temperature-dependent development of C. pyricola wereexamined. C. pyricola overwintered under the bark scale of pear trees as winter form adults and theymoved to fruiting twigs from mid-February. Honeydew produced by C. pyricola nymphs and adults asthey feed caused serious black sooty mold on leaves and fruits. The seasonal occurrence of C. pyricolawas different every year. In 1993, characterized by cold temperature and heavy precipitation, C. pyricolapopulation was maintained highly during growing season. However, the population was decreased rapidlyfrom early July in 1994, year of hot and dry weather condition. In 1995, year of average temperature, thedensity of C. pyricola population was decreased during hot months of July and August, and rebuilt up inSeptember and October. The development periods of C. pyricola eggs were 13.33 days at 15"C, 9.32 daysat 20$^{\circ}$C, 7.82 days at 25"C, 6.60 days at 30$^{\circ}$C, and 7.75 days at 35$^{\circ}$C. The development periods ofnymphs were 33.75 days at 15OC, 23.77 days at 20$^{\circ}$C, 15.21 days at 25"C, and 17.40 days at 30$^{\circ}$C. Theirdevelopment periods and mortalities were increased in higher temperatures. The parameters of nonlineardevelopment model, Weibull and linear development models of Cacopsylla pyricola were estimated.models of Cacopsylla pyricola were estimated.

  • The development of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) was studied at various constant temperatures ranging from 15 to $32.5^{\circ}C$, with $65{\pm}5%$ RH, and a photoperiod of 16L:8D. Mortality of the $1_{st}-2_{nd}\;and\;the\;3_{rd}-4_{th}$ stage nymphs were similar at most temperature ranges while at high temperature of $32.5^{\circ}C$, more $3_{rd}-4_{th}$ stage individuals died. The total developmental time ranged from 13.8 days at $15^{\circ}C$ to 4.9 days at $30.0^{\circ}C$ suggesting that the higher the temperature, the faster the development. However, at higher end temperature of $32.5^{\circ}C$ the development took 6.4 days. The lower developmental threshold temperature and effective accumulative temperatures for the total immature stage were $6.8^{\circ}C$ and 105.9 day-degrees, respectively and the nonlinear shape of temperature related development was well described by the modified Sharpe and DeMichele model. The normalized cumulative frequency distributions of developmental period for each life stage were fitted to the three-parameter Weibull function. The attendance of shortened developmental times was apparent with $1_{st}-2_{nd}\;nymph,\;3_{rd}-4_{th}$ nymph, and total nymph stages in descending order. The coefficient of determination $r^2$ ranged between 0.80 and 0.87.

  • Effects of incompatibility existing between intra-and interspecies in Pleurotus spp. on protoplast fusion, clamp formation of their fusants and fruitbody production were investigated. Protoplast fusion between intra-and interspecies of the fungus was achieved by Poly ethylene glycol treatment. The fusion frequency between intraspecies was a little higher than that of interspecies. Fusion frequency between interspecies was not correlated with their similarities based on isozyme patterns. In case of protoplast fusion between intra-and interspecies, the fusants from the compatible isolates produced normal fruit bodies, while those from the incompatible isolates did not produce clamp connections and fruit bodies except those of a few isolates presumed mutants.

  • Temperature-dependent development model is an essential component for forecasting models of insect pests as well as for insect population models. This study reviewed the nonlinear models which explain the relationship between temperature and development rate of insects. In the present study, the types of models were classified largely into empirical and biophysical model, and the groups were subdivided into subgroups according to the similarity of mathematical equations or the connection with original idea. Empirical models that apply analytical functions describing the suitable shape of development curve were subdivided into multiple subgroups as Stinner-based types, Logan-based types, performance models and Beta distribution types. Biophysical models based on enzyme kinetic reaction were grouped as monophyletic group leading to Eyring-model, SM-model, SS-mode, and SSI-model. Finally, we described the historical development and characteristics of non-linear development models and discussed the availability of models.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of in vitro culture condition and among lines on growth pattern of lateral buds from nodal cuttings of Phalaenopsis flower stalks. The ratio of bud growing into shoot from nodal cuttings of flower stalks were 90.9% and 54.4% on MS and hyponex medium, respectively. The number of buds grown vegetatively were increased remarkably on the MS medium containing 5 mg/L BA. The rate of buds grown vegetatively was higher in basal and middle parts than in upper part of flower stalks. The flower stalk sections cultured at 25~28$^{\circ}C$ showed the highest ratio of vegetative growth. Medium contamination was decreased by pretreatment of etiolation to the flower stalk. However, the pretreatment did not show specific effects on shoot development and reduction of phenolic compound. Average shoot number which was formed from flower stalk segments in 27 of 30 accessions were 3.17, while high number of shoots were obtained from Phal. 3020 and Phal. 3039. The growth pattern of lateral buds in F$_1$hybrids was similar to that of their parents.
