  • This study was carried out to understand ecological characteristics of Korean goral such as home range, seasonal home range and habitat use and used for Korean goral restoration and conservation, through a pair of gorals in the north Gyeongbuk province of Korea. With data from GPS collars, we analyzed the behavioral characteristics of the endangered Korean gorals(n=2) in Uljin area from June 2013 to July 2014. As a result, their home range was $1.38{\pm}0.24km^2$ in MCP 95%, $0.81{\pm}0.09km^2$ in FK 95% and $0.15{\pm}0.16km^2$ in FK 50% (t=8.118, p>0.05). Seasonal home range for MCP 95% was $0.74{\pm}0.31km^2$ > (winter) > $0.71{\pm}0.27km^2$ (spring) > $0.61{\pm}0.06km^2$ (autumn) > $0.27{\pm}0.04km^2$ (summer) (F=2.135 p>0.05). It showed that home range in winter was the largest and that in summer was the smallest. Mean elevation of male for seasonal habitat use was $440.18{\pm}71.32m$ in summer and that of female was $727.25{\pm}99.98m$ in spring. The lowest altitude for male was $372.72{\pm}70.79$ and female was $664.60{\pm}139.71m$. It meant that there were seasonal change and thus annual and seasonal behavior characteristics for both sexes had different correlation according to elevation change. Although in this study the correlation with prey in habitat and the changes of habitat disturbance were not clearly investigated, We could understand goral home range and habitat use through research data.

  • Elastic behavior of the railway roadbed which supports the repeating dynamic loads of the train is mainly affected by the shear modulus of the upper roadbed. Therefore, shear wave velocity estimation of the uniformly compacted roadbed can be used to estimate the elastic behavior of the railway roadbed. The objective of this study is to suggest the relationship between the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) of the upper roadbed in order to estimate the shear wave velocity by using the dynamic cone penetration test (DCPT). To ensure the reliability of the relationship, the dynamic cone penetration test and the measurement of the shear wave velocity are conducted on the constructed upper roadbed. As a method for measurement of the shear wave velocity, cross hole is used and then the dynamic cone penetration test is performed at a center point between the source and the receiver of the cross hole. As a result of the correlation of the dynamic cone penetration index and the shear wave velocity at the same depths, the shear wave velocity is estimated as a form of involution of the dynamic cone penetration index with a determinant coefficient above 0.8. The result of this study can be used to estimate both the shear wave velocity and the strength of the railway roadbed using the dynamic cone penetrometer.

  • This paper described on the availability fo the underwater telemetering by the ulterasonic multi-beam system made as a trial to expand detectable range of the fish school. The ultrasonic multi-beam system consisted of four transducers which reconstructed with the existing net recorder. The experiment for the telemetering carried out in the set net fishing ground. The results obtained are summerized as follows: 1. The detectable distance of a target by the linear arrangement of four transducers increased according to the sea depth and the interval between transducers. 2. When the fish school in the entrance of set net was measured by linear arrangement of transducers it was entered in depth of 2.5~3.5m at near position of leader, and in depth of 3.5~4.5m at near position of door net. 3. The deviations of error between the actual position and the position by transducer in case of the target depth 1m, 1.5m, 2m were 5.9~27.1cm, 3.2~28.9cm, 3.5~25.8cm respectively, and 68.3% probability radius of them were 14.6cm, 17.7cm, 17.0cm respectively. 4. When the fish school in the fish court of set net was measured by plane arrangement of transducer it was entered toward the opposite direction of tide current. 5. The available distance of telemetering by the multi-beam transducer was 1.8km and the telemetering was possible to control everywhere in case of sea depth more than three meters.

  • The movement of drifting ships on the sea is closely related to marine environmental forces such as waves, currents, winds, etc. To develop a prediction model for trajectories oi drifting ships, an experiment on the movement of drifting ships was carried out in the Southeastern Sea of Korea. Five types of ships including a lire raft and tour ships with G/T 10tons, G/T 2o tons, G/T 50 tons, and G/T 80 tons, were considered in the experiment. The G/T 50 ton class ship was used as a base ship for obtaining the currents, winds and heading angles of ship following the trajectory. The trajectory of each ship was measured by DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) and collected using APRS(Automatic Position Reporting System) installed on the base ship. The error range in position fix of DGPS are approximately ±1 m. The drift speed of ship in the experiment was between 3% to 5% of wind speed and drift direction of ship was deflected by ±90° from wind direction. Also, the heading of drifting ship was normal to wind direction.

  • Present study examined the endogenous release of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) from superiused hypothalamic sBces derived from Korean native cattie (KNC). In addition, the in vitro secretory pattern of LHRH release in '(NC was compared with that in imported cattle such as Holstein cow. The median eminences (ME) of hypothalamic tissues were disseded out, sliced and quici'ly placed in ice-cold superfilsion chamber. Superhision chambers containing ME slices were maintained in a constant temperature water-bath at 37$^{\circ}C$. Effluents were colleded on ice at 10 min intervals for a 4 hr superfusion period, and kept -2$0^{\circ}C$ prior to LHRH radloimmunoassay. LHRH release was analyzed by the PULSAR algorithm. The spontaneous release of LHRH from both cows was episodic during a 4 hr superhision period. The mean LHRH release, pulse amplitude and pulse interval m KNC were 11.08 $\pm$ 1.50 pg/min/mg x 10-$^2$, 21.43 1 7.28 pg/mg x 10-$^2$, and 39.42 $\pm$ 3.08 min, which were quite similar to those observed in Holstein cows. The basic charaderistics of the LHRH pulse generator of '(NC appears important for a better understanding about the endocrine function of KNC.

  • To analyze the behavioral characteristics of Korea endangered species female gorals (n=6) during the period of birth, using GPS collar attached on their necks, we carried out this study in two areas (Seoraksan and Woraksan National park) from March 2007 to May 2014. According to our analysis there was a change in their home range during the period of birth. The home range of females (n=6) in MCP 95% was Spring ($1.00{\pm}1.00km^2$) > Autumn ($0.66{\pm}0.30km^2$) > Summer ($0.61{\pm}0.40km^2$) > Winter ($0.50{\pm}0.10km^2$) (F=4.198, p<0.05). In the monthly analysis, their home ranges were dramatically reduced in May, June and July. It showed a statistically significant difference (F=24.261, p<0.01). These gorals showing a drastic change in home ranges were identified as gorals having offspring individual and their home ranges were decreased. The average altitude was $615.77{\pm}173.508m$ and there was no significant difference in major change between parous and nonparous female gorals. Through this analysis, we expect that it can be applied to the goral management and restoration project considering the time of birth.

  • This study assessed the ecological and behavioral characteristics of the sika deer from April 2012 to August 2016. To obtain basic information on the behavioral patterns of the sika deer (Cervus nippon) including their annual home range, sika deer wearing GPS tracking collars were released into 1,385 locations at a different altitude around where they had been captured in Songnisan. The released individuals were studied through home range analysis. According to our observations, annual home ranges of the sika deer (n=6) is seen to be $2.24{\pm}1.50km^2$ (t=3.648, p<0.05) of MCP 95% for the entire area of home range and $0.46{\pm}0.31km^2$ (t=3.666, p<0.05)$km^2$ of FK 50% for the home range core area respectively. The annual home ranges of the sika deers by sex were $2.94km^2$ for female and $1.53km^2$ for male. This study is expected to provide basic data for habitat management and ecological study of sika deer and to contribute to the management of wild animals.

  • Acoustic telemetry is used to obtain a relatively continuous record of fish movement. This method has several advantages for studying migrating fish populations that are moving from large rivers. The Nakdong River is the longest river in South Korea and the main stream has faced a change, which consists of the installation of the large weirs. In this study, we applied acoustic telemetry to monitor the movement pattern of Erythroculter erythropterus (family Cyprinidae) and identified home range and movement distance in the Nakdong River. A total of fourteen individuals were released at three different locations and around 80 km section from the estuary barrage was investigated. Eight individuals were tagged and released at estuary barrage (N02) utilized up to 15.9 km (home range) upstream from the release site as home range. Four individuals were tagged and released at Samrangjin (N07), most fish moved and stayed within 9.7 km (home range) downstream area, except E12, which did not show any movement. Two individuals were tagged and released at Changnyeong-Haman weir (N10), and all individuals migrated downstream from the release site. Especially, E14 recorded the longest accumulated detected distance, 36.7 km downstream during 32 days after release. There was no correlation identified between movement (accumulated detected distance and home range) and standard length (Spearman rank correlation, p>0.05). Although, this technique could be an available method to monitor behavior and ecology of freshwater fish effectively, increment of number of receivers and tags are required for more detailed results of fish migration.

  • In order to analyze the change in home ranges depending on the reproductive stage of Pipistrellus abramus, radio-tracking was carried out for a total of 9 individuals, 3 individuals each, by dividing stages into a pregnancy stage, lactation stage, and post-lactation stage from May to August 2009. For radio-telemetry, 0.38g transmitters, R2000 receivers and 3-element Yagi antennas were used. Pipistrellus abramus were captured using a double-stacked mist net and a harp-trap. Analysis of home ranges used a SHP File and ArcGIS 3.3 for GIS, and used a Kernel Home Range Method(KHR) and a Minimum Convex Polygon(MCP) Method for analysis. Home ranges at the pregnancy stage were MCP 100% $13.46{\pm}1.84ha$, MCP 95% $12.28{\pm}2.15ha$, KHR 50% $3.00{\pm}0.71ha$, and home ranges at the lactation stage were MCP 100% $8.13{\pm}0.23ha$, MCP 95% $7.73{\pm}0.63ha$, KHR 50%$1.84{\pm}1.05ha$. Home ranges at the post-lactation stage were MCP 100% $125.58{\pm}97.77ha$, MCP 95% $123.89{\pm}97.73ha$, KHR 50% $28.61{\pm}26.78ha$. As a result, home ranges of pipistrellus abramus showed a significant difference in all of the MCP 100%, MCP 95%, KHR 50% depending on reproductive stages, being largest in the post-lactation stage and smallest in the lactation stage.

  • Many wildlife habitats have been destroyed and fragmented during the rapid industrialization and urbanization process in Korea. It is essential to connect these fragmented habitats to reduce road-kill of many types of endangered urban wildlife. The site selection for wildlife passages must take into account the behavior of the wildlife species for safe crossing utilizing many artificial barriers in urban areas. This study attempted to identify potential wildlife passage sites for the endangered and protected leopard cats of Gangseo Ecological Park in Seoul, Korea. A space syntax analysis, an analytical technique to objectively evaluate the spatial configurations related to passage selection, found that the integration value represents the accessibility and connectivity of spaces. In this paper, this means that the bigger the integration value, the more frequently the leopard cat passes through. The leopard cats were captured and radio-tracked for 72 hours once a month from March to June of 2009. The ArcGIS and Animal Movement of Hawth Tools were used to analyze the home range and movement paths, and Axwoman 4.0 was used to analyze space syntax. The daily average movement distance was $2.099{\pm}1.08km$. During the survey period, the leopard cats crossed over an urban expressway more than 20 times, running the risk of road-kill. The range of global integration values was 0.458~1.834, while that of the local integration was 0.210~6.061. Five sites that met across the leopard cats' movement routes and roads were selected to measure the local and global integrate values. Among these sites, the higher the integration value, the higher the road-kill possibility. Thus, two of five sites with high global and local integration values were suggested as potential wildlife passage sites for the leopard cats. Now, three tunnel passages are under construction at the suggested sites for which local integration value was highest (LI=4.369). Further studies are scheduled to verify these potential sites as suitable wildlife passages.
