An Evaluation of Significance of Oriental Medicine on Treating Speech Impediment and Limb Impediment Among the Children with Development Disabilities (발달장애아동의 언어장애와 수족장애에 대한 한방치료의 유의성 평가)

  • 1. Objectives This study was conducted to establish a standard and classify suitability in the treatment of speech impediment and limb impediment among the children with development disabilities using Oriental Medicine treatment on the ground of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 2. Methods 43 patients with pediatric development disabilities with speech impediment and 10 patients with pediatric development disabilities with limb impediment as the main symptoms had been chosen in this study. Oriental Medicine treatments on the ground of Sasang Constitutional Medicine were rendered and evaluated responses as well as pursuing most proper treatment methods. 3. Results & Conclusions 1) For pediatric development disabilities with speech impediment, Oriental Medicine treatment showed a significant effect on similarity of Autism and Cerebral Palsy, but insignificant effect on innate Autism. 2) For pediatric development disabilities with limb impediment, Bee venom was effective for severe limb impediment and limb asthenia, while as eight principles herbal acupuncture effective for mild limb impediment and spasticity. 3) Sasang Constitutional Medicine for treating speech impediment and limb impediment among the children with development disabilities showed general improvement as a fundamental healing through coordinating inner organ activities.

  • It is very important for rehabilitation to deal with psychological aspects of persons with disabilities, as well as efforts improving the institutional and environmental conditions. A majority of persons with severe disabilities in the situation of Korea have difficulty in having and maintaining a job. Work should and would be a source of self-respect and material well-being in this modern society. Therefore, Vocational rehabilitation services are measures in restoration of family functions and social participation of persons with disabilities. This study aims at investigating linguistic characteristics and the validity of constructional concepts of picture interest test Inventories that have been utilized for the segregated groups of people such as persons with developmental disabilities. Picture interest test inventories seemed to be valid for measuring psychological traits and characteristics of people with mental retardation, and this finding can be extended to the group of other developmental disabilities, such as learning disabilities and mild/moderate behavioral deficits. The Holland classification system seemed to be best fitted for developing a comprehensive and accurate vocational interest inventory.

A CASE OF PANDAS WITH CHILDHOOD DISINTEGRATIVE DISORDER (소아기 붕괴성 장애의 양상을 보이는 PANDAS 1례)

  • After the fact that obsessive-compulsive symptoms or tic symptoms are common in Sydenham's chorea which is a sequale of rheumatic fever produced by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus was reported, the association between group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus and a subgroup of obsessivecompulsive disorder(OCD) or tic disorder has been attentioned. This subgroup shared a unique clinical course, characterized by an abrupt onset of symptoms and/or dramatic exacerbations. And this subgroup was distinguished by pre-pubertal onset of symptoms, neurological abnormalities(choreiform movements and a unique pattern of motoric hyperactivity), as well as by relapsing and remitting symptom course. Acronym PANDAS(pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection) was used to denote a subgroup of OCD or tic disorder patients with these clinical characteristics. Then, there was a report suggesting that PANDAS category include some of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) and were two case reports of anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder with characteristics of PANDAS. This case is a patient who developed normally until age of 7, but after pharyngeal inflammation with high fever, he showed disturbance of cognition, social relationship, and language and communication, as well as tic symtoms and abnormal movement on face, hand, and foot. We report this case with review of literatures, because we think that this case belongs to the PANDAS category. Based on this observation, we suggest that PANDAS category include some of childhood disintegrative disorder as well as OCD, tic disorder, and ADHD.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the internal foundation of lifelong education for the disabled. The composition system of the meaning of contents for this purpose is divided into three elements: 'of' which means subject based on lifelong education for the disabled, 'for' which means purpose, and 'from' which means practical main base. The research method was to discuss the academic basis, practical application model and plan, or to analyze the literature through the previous studies that were actualized in order to form the internal foundation of the support system for lifelong education for the disabled. Second, the expert meeting was conducted to improve the specificity of the research contents based on the basis of the literature analysis. The contents of this study are presented in two main ways: the foundation of developmental disabilities and the foundation of schools by synthesizing the main bases of subjects, purposes, and practical base required to form the internal foundation of lifelong education for the disabled. The above two factors first establish the internal universality of the support system for lifelong education for the disabled, and in connection with the types of sensory disabilities and the general lifelong education. As a result, the long-term stability of the overall support system for lifelong education for the disabled was analyzed.

FOLLOWF-UP STUDY OF THE TIC DISORDERS (틱 장애 환자의 추적 조사)

  • 30 DSM-III or DSM-III-R tic patients were assessed by hospital records and Yale Global Tic Severity Scale to study the common characteristics, clinical course and longterm outcome of tic disorders after 3.1-18.1 years, 73.3% of the patients(treated or untreated) have recovered or partially improved. Identifical precipitating factors were found in 9 patients. Associated disorders were ADHD, sleep disorder, and so on. The outcome according to age of onset, duration of follow-up and diagnoses have no statistically significance. Increased age at follow up was influenced improvement of tic symptoms, though statistically not significant(p=0.327). These results suggest that the outcome of tic disorder is not ominous and they are relatively good social adjustment inspite of carrying the tic symptoms. But this study has some limitations such as retrospective study and sample size. Studies designed prospectively with large sample would be needed to generalize theses results.

Grammaticality Judgement and Error Correction by Children with Developmental Language Impairments (경계선지능 언어발달장애아동과 일반아동의 문법성 판단 및 오류수정 - 조사를 중심으로 -)

  • In the present study, we investigated the grammaticality judgement skills of children with developmental language impairments. The participants included 20 children with language impairments of ages ranging from 7 to 9 years and of IQ's ranging from 71 to 84, and 40 normally developing children. Twenty normal children were matched with the language impaired children in their language ages and the other 20 normal children were matched with the language impaired children in their chronological ages. The children were asked to judge the grammatical correctness of 48 short sentences, half of which were ungrammatical sentences containing incorrect case-markers and the other half were grammatically correct sentences. Four types of case-markers including nominative "i/ga", accusative "ul/lul", locative "e," and instrumental "ro" were systematically changed to generate the ungrammatical sentences. The language impaired children performed worse than both groups of normally developing children in detecting the ungrammatical sentences and in correcting the case-markers of those sentences. In detecting the errors of ungrammatical sentences, the language impaired children exhibited variable performances across the different case-markers.

  • 현제 산업용 장비의 운용은 작업자가 장비를 사용되는 현장에 상주하며 관리하는 형태로 되어 있다. 그러나 이러한 거리와 시간의 제약은 실제 자동화의 실현에 큰 장애가 되고 있다. 현제 우리는 컴퓨터 네트워크의 급속한 발달로 인터넷을 통해 거리에 상관없이 세계 어디와도 데이터를 주고 받을 수 있다. 이러한 기술을 산업용 장비에 응용함으로써 거리의 제약을 극복하여 생산 현장의 효율성을 증가시킬수 있다. 본 논문의 목적은 DC 서보모터의 제어기를 자동 동조형 제어기로 설계하고 이를 웹을 이용하여 원격으로 사용자가 제어할수 있도록 하는데 있다. 개발 시스템의 구동 소프트웨어는 자동화 시스템의 다양한 분야에서 사용되는 그래픽 언어형식의 LabVIEW를 사용하였으며, 자동 동조방식은 릴레이 자동 동조법을 사용하였다.

DIFFERENCES IN THE PATTERNS OF PARENTAL REARING BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND DEPRESSIVE CONDUCT DISORDER IN ADOLESCENCE (청소년의 우울증과 우울 행동 장애에서의 부모 양육 태도에 관한 연구)

  • In adolescence, the symptoms of depression are more various and different from those of adult. Conduct behaviours are frequently represented in adolescent's depression. The patients who have the depression and conduct disorder are defined as depressive condor disorder in ICD-10. We hypothesized that there might be different parental rearing patterns between the patients with depression alone and the depressive conduct disorder. We applied children's depression inventory (CDI), parental rating form for conduct disorder based on DSM-III-R, and parental bonding instrument (PBI) to patients and normal control adolescent group. The results were as follows : 1) There were no significant differences in severity of depressive symptoms, maternal care, maternal overprotection, and paternal care. 2) Paternal overprotection showed significant higher scores in depressive conduct disorder group than depression group and normal control group. 3) There were positive correlations in the severity of depressive symptoms and behavior problems in all subjects. 4) There were no correlations in maternal care and overprotecion with conduct problems, but with depressive symptoms in all subject. 4) There were no correlations in paternal care with conduct problems and depressive symptoms in all subjects. 5) There were significant correlations in patienral overprotective, intrusive attitudes with conduct problems, not with depressive symptoms in all subjects.

  • In this study, we investigated the current status of written discourse mediation in a more general and in-depth manner, including the training completion experience and knowledge of written discourse mediation among Speech-Language Pathologists in Korea, and the Speech-Language Pathologists' perceptions of written discourse mediation. We wanted to look into the requirements. Research results were derived through a questionnaire answered by 110 Speech-Language Pathologists. As a result, although most Speech-Language Pathologists learned about written discourse intervention in the curriculum, their application of written discourse intervention in clinical settings is insufficient and they have difficulty with written discourse intervention due to lack of systematic and professional knowledge of this intervention. I could tell that I was feeling it. Looking at the status of written discourse intervention, only 46.4% of the Speech-Language Pathologists who responded in clinical settings showed that they had experience with written discourse intervention. In other words, it was analyzed that 53.6% of respondents had no experience with writing discourse mediation. As a result of Speech-Language Pathologists' perception and demand for written discourse intervention, 76.4% of SpeechLanguage Pathologists responded that they thought written discourse intervention was an important area of speech therapy. In addition, 62.8% of respondents responded that a curriculum for discourse mediation is necessary, more than 90% said that continuous research on written discourse mediation is necessary, and 89.1% thought that the development of textbooks and teaching aids was necessary.This study is significant in that it investigated the experiences and perceptions of Speech-Language Pathologists in written discourse intervention and analyzed the results in that it provided direction on how education and various processes related to written discourse intervention should be conducted.

A Case Study of Social Context-Based Musical Play Program for Improving Communication Skills of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (자폐스펙트럼장애 아동의 의사소통기술 향상을 위한 사회적 상황 기반 음악극 적용 사례)

  • The purpose of this case study was to construct a social context-based musical play program for children with high-functioning Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) and to examine its applicability in improving the social skills of the children. The participants were a group of three children with high-functioning ASD with an average age of 9 years. The children participated as a group in 40-minute sessions that were implemented twice a week for 8 weeks. The children's social communication behaviors were observed during the sessions and analyzed in terms of sharing and exchanging their ideas and voluntarily interacting with peers and an adult (i.e., the researcher). The Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) was completed by the teachers of participants before and after the intervention. For all three participants, the occurrence of behaviors to exchange their ideas with peers and voluntarily interacting with an adult increased following the intervention. However, there were individual differences between the participants in terms of changes in each target behavior depending on their level of language and social skill development. These results suggest that social context-based musical play program may produce positive changes in voluntary communication with peers and play a significant role in expanding the scope of interventions that target the social communication of children with ASD.
