The cyclic triaxial test was carried out to research liquefaction characteristics and sample disturbance effects of silty sand soils at the west coast in Korea. First, liquefaction in silty sand was generated when axial strain approached to $\pm10%$ of strain and behavior of pore pressure was similar to the formula suggested by Seed, Martin, and Lysmer(1975). Also, it was found that dilatancy was generated at failure. Secondly, the liquefaction evaluation methods suggested by many researchers were carried out and the results were compared. In these methods the weak depth in liquefaction was similar and the method carried out by cyclic triaxial test on remolded sample showed the least safety factor. Thirdly the stress ratio by cyclic triaxial test was compared with that obtained from SPT N-value as a kind of empirical methods. It was found that the effect of sample disturbance was relatively small when SPT N-value was less than 20, but there were large differences in safety factor and resistance of liquefaction in soil by the effects of disturbance and remolding when SPT N-value was more than 20.
Analysis of cable structures is complex because their force - displacement relationships are highly nonlinear and also because large deformations introduce geometric nonlinearity. Therefore, we must take account their geometric nonlinearity in the analysis and find the equilibrated shape of cable structures. In this paper, to slove these problems, numerical procedures involving geometrical nonlinearity are introduced. They are applicable to general cable net, flexible transmission lines and suspended cable roof. These procedures are divided into two parts; one is to obtain the equilibrated shapes and stresses of the cable structures with uniform load by flexibility iteration method, the other is to analyse the equilibrated structures subjected to nodal external forces by nonlinear finite element method.
It is well-known that pavement is easily damaged by several factors including permanent deformation and fatigue crack, causing service life of the pavement to be shorter than expected. It is very important to predict amount of permanent deformation for designing pavement and developing design method of pavement. A new model of permanent deformation of pavement materials based on concept of shear stress ratio has been proposed because the lower pavement materials are highly affected by shear strength of the material. In this study a large repetitive triaxial load test has been adapted for performing test of permanent deformation of crushed subbase materials. The test procedure which includes concept of shear stress ratio has been newly developed. Several important model parameters can be obtained from the test that can be used for making correct permanent deformation model of the material.

Generally, the repeated traffic loading condition should be considered to predict the long-term deformation on road foundations or foundation systems. However, it is not easy to estimate long-term deformation on multi-layered system like roads and railways. For more quantitative analysis, mechanistic-empirical approach requires proper analytical tool, material's model, and material properties of foundation geomaterials under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, therefore, laboratory data from the long-term repeated load triaxial tests were used to predict accumulated deformation on pavement foundations and the results were analyzed based on the nonlinear models and stress state considered. All these results are presented and verified on laboratory based scale using the finite element analysis with the deformation characteristics of foundation geomaterials at various stress states.

This paper presents a nonlinear Moving Least Squares(MLS) difference method for material nonlinearity problem. The MLS difference method, which employs strong formulation involving the fast derivative approximation, discretizes governing partial differential equation based on a node model. However, the conventional MLS difference method cannot explicitly handle constitutive equation since it solves solid mechanics problems by using the Navier's equation that unifies unknowns into one variable, displacement. In this study, a double derivative approximation is devised to treat the constitutive equation of inelastic material in the framework of strong formulation; in fact, it manipulates the first order derivative approximation two times. The equilibrium equation described by the divergence of stress tensor is directly discretized and is linearized by the Newton method; as a result, an iterative procedure is developed to find convergent solution. Stresses and internal variables are calculated and updated by the return mapping algorithm. Effectiveness and stability of the iterative procedure is improved by using algorithmic tangent modulus. The consistency of the double derivative approximation was shown by the reproducing property test. Also, accuracy and stability of the procedure were verified by analyzing inelastic beam under incremental tensile loading.
The effects of consolidation stress history including consolidation stress ratio, OCR and cyclic loading with drainage on the undrained shear strength of cohesive soil were investig toted. The ratio$(S_u/\sigma'_{vc})ckou/(S_U/\sigma_{vc})cuv$ was observed to increase with increasing OCR. The equation (1) in this paper by Mayne(1980) for the undrained shear strength of the overconsolidated clay and the equation (4) by Yasuhara(1994), for the postcyclic shear strength were found to be relatively well applicable in the case of Kofonsolidated. It was also suggested that the value of the critical state pore pressure parameter As in these two equations for the in situ shear strength of lightly overconsolidated clay(OCR< 3) be obtained by the standard consolidating test.

It has been well known that the fracture mechanics can be applied to large through crack growth. But the growth rate of small surface cracks initiated from a small defect under rotary bending fatigue tests can not be treated as a function of stress intensity factor range. In this paper, to investigate the growth behavior of surface small fatigue cracks in the view-point of both fracture mechanics and strength of materials, the fatigue test has been carried out on two kinds of plain carbon steels with a small surface defect. Applying the concept of the cyclic strain intensity factor range .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$/$_{t}$ to the analysis of small surface fatigue crack growth, it is found that the relationship between cyclic strain intensity factor range and crack growth rate shows linear relation on logarithmic coordinates regardless of defect sizes and two kinds of carbon steels.s.s.

In order to evaluate a stress state of concrete according to the change of tensile force of prestressed beam, improved nonlinear resonant ultrasonic spectroscopy(NRUS) method is proposed. This technique is advantageous to evaluate the stress state in initial state because the method shows much higher sensitivity than existing linear ultrasonic methods. The NRUS technique measure a nonlinearity parameter, which is calculated from the resonant frequency shift of ultrasonic wave related to the medium state, and the result is also closely related to the stress state of concrete. In this study, the nonlinearity parameter was measured with the change of tensile force to verify the close relationship between the two factors, and the effect of repetitive load cycle on the change of nonlinearity parameter was analyzed. In addition, sensitivity comparison with the linear ultrasonic pulse velocity method was performed. Through the experimental results, the possibility of NRUS technique for the evaluation of stress state in prestressed beam was confirmed.

In this study, it is attempted to examine (1) the residual deformation and elastic deformation induced from the repeated loads (up to the maximum of 100,000 times) on fully compacted soil specimen, the relation between stress and strain by performing the unconfined compressive test, after repeated loads and (2) the effect of water content, dry density, number of cycle, repeated loads, etc. on the effect of the stress-strain relation. The rate of deformation caused by repeated loads greatly depends on to the condition whether the water content is above or below the plastic limit. It is possible to estimate the initial tangent modulus of soil by means of modulus of elastic deformation obtained by putting repeated loads on the clay soil.
The sands which use for soil improvement of soft ground at coastal area contain more or less amount of shells. In this research the effects of shell contents on the liquefaction resistance of the shelly sand were studied. NGI cyclic simple shear tests were performed for the shell-sands with shell contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% under the effective vertical stress of 50kPa, 100kPa and 150kPa for 40% and 55% of relative density, respectively. Cyclic simple shear test results showed that for the low effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased rapidly with increase of shell contents in both 40% and 55% relative density. On the other hand, for the high effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased slightly in 40% relative density and was almost same in 55% relative density. Liquefaction resistance decreased with increasing effective vertical stress for both 40% and 55% relative density. In the same effective vertical stress and shell contents, liquefaction resistance increased with the increase of relative density.
