  • Community structure (seasonal fluctuation), taxon diversity, nematodes/benthic harpacticoids and nematodes/kinorhynchs ratios of meiobenthos were studied in the Gamak Bay, Korea. A series of samplings were carried out from April 1997 to May 1999. Meiobenthic organisms was collected by van Veen grab and three subcores of 34 mm in internal diameter were taken from each sediment sample. The total density of meiobenthos in each seasons was found to be the highest in May 1999, and the lowest in December 1998. Total density of meiobenthos at each station was the highest at Station 9 in May 1999 ($2,218 inds./10 cm^2$) and the lowest at Station 3 in December 1998 ($2 inds./10 cm^2$). The Gamak Bay seemed to have an individual number increased from the inner toward the outer stations. The highest number of meiobenthos was observed on 0.125 and 0.063 mm mesh size. In every season, over $80{\%}$ of the meiobenthos was composed of only four groups: nematodes, benthic harpacticoids, sarcomastigophorans and nauplius larvae of crustaceans. Seasonal fluctuation of meiobenthos was also studied. The nematodes/benthic harpacticoids(nematodes/kinorhynchs) ratios were studied as an index of pollution monitoring for benthic ecosystem at each station in each season. The value of nematodes/benthic harpacticoids ratio was the highest at the inner stations and the lowest at the outer stations in the Gamak Bay. Taxon diversity (H') was the highest at the outer stations and the lowest at the inner stations in the Gamak Bay. The value of nematodes/benthic harpacticoids ratio significantly increased from the outer toward the inner stations, whereas the taxon diversity (H') significantly increased from the inner toward the outer stations in Gamak Bay.

  • There are more than 10 ships and jetfoil passenger ships with speeds of 30~40 kts navigating between Japan and Busan ports per hour. Busan port has the highest density of traffic among the Korean ports and waterways. Jetfoil ships are the most frequently encountered amongst other vessels and about 18 % of passing jetfoil vessels violated port regulations. Based on the analysis of traffic survey carried out for 10 days, jetfoil vessels often overtook other vessels in route and deviated with high speed. This paper verified a proper speed and how to navigate in or out route of jetfoil ships by marine traffic flow simulation. A acceptable navigation speed for jetfoil vessel's mariner was calculated at less than about 32kts in Busan Port. It is a little different that shiphandling difficulty of jetfoil was almost the same whether passing in and out route in Busan Port. This paper proposes that the passing time of jetfoil ships should avoid the peak time to improve the traffic safety in Busan Port.

  • In order to investigate the 'In Vitro 2-Cell Block' phenomenon found in certain mouse strains such as ICR, the present studies have been done. Fertilized eggs (1-cell) and 2-cell embryos recovered from the oviducts of the ICR mouse at the various time intervals after hCG injection to induce ovulation were cultured for 3 or 4 days to examine the capability for further cleavage beyond 2-cell stage. Consequently, it was found that some proportions of the 1-cell or 2-cell embryos recovered at 30 hours post hCG showed their cleaving capability and if the embryos were obtained after 48 hours of hCG injection, they were all at 2-cell stage and most of them developed to the blastocysts in vitro. It was also found that the embryos obtained at 27 hours post hCG showed their stronger capacity of further development in the groups cultured for shorter period than 24 hours in vitro before transferring to the oviduct. Based on the results, it can be inferred that mouse fertilized eggs should be remained inside the oviduct for a certain length of period after fertilization, or they should be cultured for a short period than 12 hours before returning back to the oviduct in order to develop to blastocysts. It was also found that though the embryos under the 2-cell block in culture showed normal feature up to 24 hours under the microscopical observation, they had already lost their capacity for the normal development, and if the culture of the 2-cell embryos was extended to 48 hours, they showed nuclei with heteropyknosis, and the vacuoles were were detected in the cytoplasm of embryonic cell if they were cultured for 72 hours.

  • This study was to explore epistemological features presented in texts of exhibit panels in the science museum located in Gyeonggi Province. Out-of-school or daily experiences allow more properly and potentially students to form informative science image, because the understandings of scientific epistemology were constructed tacitly through various experiences over a long period of time. The target for this study was panel texts of exhibits in a science museum as an of out-of-school context. The analytical framework was adopted from epistemological frameworks by Ryder et al. (1999). The research results were explored in the categories of relationship between scientific knowledge claims and the data, the nature of lines of scientific enquiry, and social dimension of science. It revealed that one exhibit might reflect the characteristics of one epistemological position: relating one data to one knowledge claim; generating knowledge claim from scientists' individual interests or from discipline's internal epistemology; scientists working as a community or an institution. Findings suggested that the exhibits of a science museum including panel texts and medium need to reflect the wide ranges of scientific epistemology.

  • This study was conducted to detect lead which is exhausted with gas from running automobiles and is considered to accumulate in cropping lands. Soil samples were taken from uplands and paddy fields with different distance from highways. atonic absorption spectrophotometer was applied for analysis. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In the areas of Seoul toll gate and Jookjeon, Gyeonggi province, soils of fields within $3\~5$ meters from highway appeared to contain $11\~110\;ppm$ of lead. On the other hand, soils outside of $3\~5$ meters showed only natural background level of lead. 2. The maximum concentration of lead in Hwoedeuk area (Choong-nam p개vince) was 16.3 ppm and those of Kimhae and Dongrae areas were about 12 ppm. Low concentration of $1\~4\;ppm$ was observed in the areas, south of Daejeon along the Honam and Namhae highways. 3. Lead seemed to accumulate in the soil surface within the range of 0 to 5 centimeters which anable to expect little translocation to deeper layer of the soil. 4. lost of arable lands locates at least 15 meters apart from highways so that lead concentrations were lower than expected. No damage could be speculated with the present concentration of lead analyzed. This does not deny the necessity to the long term dectect of the possible pollutant.

  • This study evaluated the environmental impacts of a soil washing (SW) process, especially, we compared the on-site and off-site remediation of TPH-contaminated soil using green and sustainable remediation (GSR) tool. To assess relative contribution of each stage on environmental footprints in the entire soil washing process, we classified the process into four major stages: site foundation (stage I), excavation (stage II), separation & washing (stage III), and wastewater treatment (stage IV). In on-site SW process, the relative contribution of $CO_2$ emissions and energy consumption were 87.1% and 80.4%, respectively in stage I, and in off-site SW process, the relative contribution of $CO_2$ emissions and energy consumption were 82.7% and 80.5%, respectively in stage II. In conclusion, the major factor contributing environmental impact in the SW process were consumable materials including steel and stainless steel for washing equipment in on-site treatment and fuel consumption for transportation of soil in off-site treatment.

  • In this study the authors developed the practice-centered science camp program which was based on the review of out-of-school scientific activities and the standards of HASA (Hands, Head and Heart At Science Activity) curriculum emphasizing on hands-operated skills. After applying this science camp program we confirmed the validity of the program based on the students' responses at the camp. Using students' reports written during the camp and their essays written on the web-site after camp, we analyzed students' responses into four categories; knowledge, inquiry, hands-operated skills, and scientific attitudes. Also we evaluated the components of the science camp programs and students' perception of science and science-related attitudes using a questionnaire before and after the camp. In terms of contents and activities for the development and application of science camp, our result showed that the science camp program should be complemented to connect real life with high-tech science and include more activities related hands-operated skills and competition activities evoking constructive competitive spirits. In conclusion, we can infer that the agencies which take parts of the national policy enterprise related science education, such as Scientific Education Research Center, must develop and specialize science camp program with more competitive human resource system and economic support. Science educators should give more attention on joining school science education with out-of-school science education, which might have a positive effect on students' attitudes and participation toward science.

  • In order to concludes that human being is in the making, not a being already perfectly made, this paper goes through four steps. The first step raises a question that human being is only a being of reason. The Kant's assertion that human being has a moral capacity of 'good will' seems to be distorted portrait of human being. The second step calls into a question that human being can obey universal moral laws. Any universal moral law can't be obeyed by moral agent, because he can't exclude his external situations which are ceaselessly changing. Nevertheless imperatives of reason which require to obey the universal moral laws seems to be a 'unfortunate legacy' to human being. The third step demonstrates that imperatives of reason are originated from dualism which have dichotomize "mind vs. body" as "internal capacity vs. external situation". According to dualism, imperatives of reason require internal capacity to exclude emotions or desires which are sensitive to external influences. The fourth step discusses that interacting of inner and outer is to be necessary for human being. Then, reason is to be really in one glove with emotions which are beginning form externals, otherwise reason can't stop being powerless to any external situation. Concludingly any human being is to be processing to a new being, not situating any extreme antagonism of "reason vs. emotion". Because of emotional human animal, not a perfect god, humans being is in the ceaseless process into the making a new self.
