분자생물학의 명문인 미국 위스콘신대학에서 논문 '대장균 유전자 전사과정의 메커니즘'으로 박사학위를 받은 노정혜교수. 항생제를 만드는 방선균이 환경변화에 대응할 수 있도록 하는 유전자연구를 계속하고 있는 노교수는 "오묘한 생명현상들을 가장 기본적인 분자세계에서 규명해내는 연구작업이 보람스럽다"고 밝히고 있다.

1965년 30명의 회원으로 창립한 한국천문학회는 현재 회원이 4백60명으로 늘어났으며 박사학위 소지자만 60여명이나 된다. 특히 작년엔 1AU아시아태평양지역회의를 열어 2백27편의 논문이 발표되었으며 매년 봄ㆍ가을 학술발표회를 개최하는 등 연구활동을 계속하고 있다.

'CTO에게 듣는다' 세 번째 주인공은 박상일 PSIA(주) 대표이사이다. 박 대표는 서울대학교 물리학과를 졸업한 후 스탠퍼드대에서 응용물리학 박사학위를 받았다. 스탠퍼드대 주임연구원을 지냈으며, 미국 실리콘밸리에서 원자현미경 전문 벤처기업 'Park Scientific Instuments'를 설립한데 이어 한국 법인 PSIA(주) 설립했다.

미국의 수리과학은 세계 주도적 위치에 있기는 하지만 막대한 재원의 뒷받침이 없이는 그 위치를 유지하기 어려운 실정이다. 그동안은 공산권 등에서 이민온 수학자들이 세계적 권위를 유지해 왔지만 직장도 적고 봉급도 낮을 뿐만 아니라 박사학위를 받는데도 너무 시간이 많이 걸려 대학원생들이 외면하고 있기 때문에 미국의 수리과학은 갈수록 흔들리고 있는 실정이다.

한국과학기술연구원(KIST) 제20대 신임원장에 금동화 박사가 선임됐다. 금동화 신임 원장은 전문성과 지도력, 개혁성, 국제적 감각 등에서 탁월한 능력을 인정받고 있다. 금동화 신임 원장은 대전고와 서울대 금속공학고를 졸업한 후 미 스탠퍼드대에서 재료과학박사 학위를 취득했으며 1985년 KIST에 들어와 지난 2002년 부원장을 지낸 바 있다. 다음은 금 신임위원장과의 대담 내용이다.

Traditionally. theses and dissertations have been extremely underutilized information sources due to their lack of physical availability. The development of electronic theses and dissertations system will provide the opportunity for theses and dissertations to be recognized as a basic channel for the dissemination of research findings and an essential resource in the discovery process. In digital environment. many universities and libraries throughout the world are now making digitized versions of traditional(print) dissertations available online. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current theses and dissertations management system based on web questionaries and survey of home pages. and to suggest a standardized theses and dissertation management model in Korea.

단백질이 합성된 후 어떻게 고유의 3차 구조를 형성하는가에 대하여 의문을 갖고 15년간 단백질폴딩연구를 계속하고 있는 대전 한국과학기술연구원 생명공학연구소의 책임연구원 유명희박사. 76년 서울대 미생물학과를 졸업한 후 미국에 유학하여 81년 버클리대학에서 박사학위를 받고 귀국한 유박사는 "앞으로 여성후학들이 공동연구로 더욱 좋은 환경 속에서 연구활동을 할 수 있는 분위기 조성을 위해 노력하겠다" 강조한다.
