This study analyzed trends in research activity as represented in master's theses and doctoral dissertations in the field of library and information science from 2001 to 2010. This study explores the year of publication, the university of publication, the department/major of publication, and subject by examining recent trends in theses and dissertations in the field of LIS, and comparing the results to previously reported by Sohn, Jung-Pyo, for the period of 1959 to 2002. Conclusions are 1) The finding of this study demonstrate that quantitative progress is being made in library and information science research in 2000s. 2) In comparison to previous study, average number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations per year increased four times. 3) The number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations on the subject area of information services were increased.

Doctoral professionals who majored Home Economics Education are relatively rare and recently have been produced in a limited number of institutions. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the Ph.D. Dissertation majored in Home Economics Education by research subjects and methods. Just twenty dissertations published in domestic universities were selected through internet search to be analyzed in this paper. This research showed five research subject areas of the dissertation such as core concepts and perspectives, curriculum, teaching and learning, teachers empowerment, and others. Each subject had three to five references and time difference in publication. The research subject related to concepts and perspectives was more likely to be studied in an early stage, followed by the subject of curriculum. The research subject became to be varied to teaching and learning and teachers empowerment areas. The research methods were associated with the research subject, as expected. Literature analysis was common in the subject on concepts and perspectives, curriculum, and textbook analysis, while survey was in teachers empowerment. Teaching and learning subject used various research methods together. Numerous dissertation with variety of research subjects and methods would be expected to be followed to develop research on Home Economics Education.

This study was carried out on the citations within the chemistry field Ph.D. dissertations to ascertain what types of documents are the most frequently used in the research process, the most frequently consulted journals and obsolescence rate of the journals. The analysis covered 42 doctoral theses presented at 'K' university in Seoul from 2000 to 2008. The results obtained from the 3,258 citations revealed that the most frequently used documents were Academic Journal, which accounted for 91 percent of the total; 27 journals met 50 percent of the information needs; and the age of 50 percent of the citations was no older than 9 years. Finally, the results can be used as a tool for the collection management of the library. and Researcher with the chemistry field Ph.D. dissertation.

23년 전인 1976년 Nebraska대학에서 박사과정을 이수할 때의 일이다. 그때 나는 학위논문을 대수학분야로 잡고 있으면서 대수학의 환론과목과 해석학분야의 위너적분론을 수강했다. 그런데 막상 시험을 볼 때 감기몸살로 대수학 환론과목을 망치는 바람에 박사학위 방향을 해석학분야로 돌렸다. 그때 나를 지도하던 Johnson교수는 20년이 지난 지금까지도 스승으로 선배로서 학문의 동반자 관계를 계속하고 있어 그때 시험의 감기몸살이 나에겐 전화위복이 된 셈이다.

The purpose of this study is to compare the tendency to study children's services in libraries korea and in North America in order to analyze the implications for future studies in the field of Library and Information Science. Looking at masters and doctoral theses submitted from 1981 to 2010, we analyzed 110 theses in Korea and 89 theses in North America. After reviewing the abstracts of the theses, we classified their subjects into six categories, including the materials, services, programs, administration and management, type of children, and the theory and history behind each library's services. Four things stood out from the study. First, the number of theses in Korea has had a sharp increase recently, but in North America there has been a steady increase for a longer period of time. Second, the theses about library programs are approximately 50% in Korea, but in North America 50% of those theses were about materials for children. Third, in Korea about 90% of the theses are for master's degree, while approximately 90% in North America are for doctoral degree. Fourth, looking at each of the different categories, Korea seemed to focus on the services and programs offered and the administration and management, while North America focused on the materials offered, the type of children to partake in the services and the theory and history behind the services offered.

Theses and dissertations are works embodying results of original research on a subject and substantiating a particular point of view by usually graduate students, as a degree requirement. Most theses and dissertations are not controlled by commercial publishing interests, and thus are not obtained in book-form by most libraries. Due to their lack of physical and ready availability and information about the contents, theses and dissertations have been extremely underutilized sources of information without distinction of nations. The goal of this paper is to provide the current informations on the distribution and management systems of theses and dissertations in Foreign and Korea. The findings of this study will provide the basis for developing an standardized management model of theses and dissertations that meets the needs of researchers, students, and librarians in Korea.

미국 유학중 나의 박사학위논문 연구는 엽산의 이성질체를 합성하는 것이었는데 하루는 이 물질을 사용해 연구에 필요한 물질을 합성하려고 했는데 실험중 이상한 물질을 발견했다. 나는 대학원 동기생의 도움으로 이 시료를 NMR로 촬영해 이제까지 알려진 이 물질의 구조가 잘못된 것임을 밝혀냈다. 이 실험결과가 영국의 권위있는 학술지에 발표되어 미국 유학중인 나는 갑자기 화제의 인물이 되었다.

Traditionally. theses and dissertations have been extremely underutilized information sources due to their lack of physical availability. The development of electronic theses and dissertations system will provide the opportunity for theses and dissertations to be recognized as a basic channel for the dissemination of research findings and an essential resource in the discovery process. In digital environment. many universities and libraries throughout the world are now making digitized versions of traditional(print) dissertations available online. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current theses and dissertations management system based on web questionaries and survey of home pages. and to suggest a standardized theses and dissertation management model in Korea.

인터넷 환경에서는 정보자원을 식별하기 위한 기호로서 URL을 사용하고 있다. 그러나 URL은 자원이 위치한 장소를 지시하기 때문에 자원의 위치가 변경될 경우에는 접근하지 못한다는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 URL의 단점을 보완하기 위한 대안으로서 URN을 이용하여 국내 학위논문을 고유하게 식별하고 검색하기 위한 방안에 대해 연구하였다.
