  • The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the ethanol blending in diesel-ethanol blended fuels on the spray and combustion characteristics in a common-rail four-cylinder diesel engine. For the analysis of the spray characteristics, the spray images were obtained using a high speed camera with metal-halide lamps. From these spray images, the macroscopic spray characteristics such as the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated. Also, the combustion characteristics including the combustion pressure and the rate of heat release were studied with the analysis of the exhaust emissions in diesel-ethanol blended fuel driven diesel engine. It can be confirmed from the experiment on spray characteristics of diesel-ethanol blended fuels that the increased ethanol blending ratio induced the decrease of the spray tip penetration after the end of the injection. The spray cone angle slightly increased by the blending of ethanol fuel. In the experiment on atomization characteristics, the ethanol blending caused the improvement of the diesel atomization performance. On the other hand, at the same engine load condition, the increase of the ethanol blending ratio lead to lengthen the ignition delays, and to decrease the peak combustion pressure and the rate of heat release. Totally, the combustion and emission characteristics of ULSD and DE10 showed similar characteristics. However, in the case of DE20, CO and HC rapidly increased, and $NO_x$ decreased. It can be believed that 20% ethanol disturbed the combustion of diesel-ethanol blended fuel due to the low cetane number and evaporation.

  • Bio-heavy oil for power generation is a product made by mixing animal fat, vegetable oil and fatty acid methyl ester or its residues and is being used as steam heavy fuel(B-C) for power generation in Korea. However, if the fuel supply system of the fuel pump, the flow pump, the injector, etc., which is transferred to the boiler of the generator due to the composition of the raw material of the bio-heavy oi, causes abrasive wear, it can cause serious damage. Therefore, this study evaluates the fuel characteristics and lubricity properties of various raw materials of bio-heavy oil for power generation, and suggests fuel composition of biofuel for power generation to reduce frictional wear of generator. The average value of lubricity (HFRR abrasion) for bio-heavy oil feedstocks for power generation is $137{\mu}m$, and it varies from $60{\mu}m$ to $214{\mu}m$ depending on the raw materials. The order of lubricity is Oleo pitch> BD pitch> CNSL> Animal fat> RBDPO> PAO> Dark oil> Food waste oil. The average lubricity for the five bio-heavy oil samples is $151{\mu}m$ and the distribution is $101{\mu}m$ to $185{\mu}m$. The order of lubricity is Fuel 1> Fuel 3> Fuel 4> Fuel 2> Fuel 5. Bio-heavy oil samples (average $151{\mu}m$) show lower lubricity than heavy oil C ($128{\mu}m$). It is believed that bio-heavy oil for power generation is composed of fatty acid material, which is lower in paraffin and aromatics content than heavy oil(B-C) and has a low viscosity and high acid value, resulting in inhibition of the formation of lubricating film by acidic component. Therefore, in order to reduce friction and abrasion, it is expected to increase the lubrication of fuel when it contains more than 60% Oleo pitch and BD pitch as raw materials of bio-heavy oil for power generation.

  • As the environmental pollution by the drastic increase of vehicles becomes one of the social major concerns, the method of reducing the harmful exhaust emission is being the subject of interest. Utilization of used frying oil as a raw material for biodiesel production is helpful not only for the stable supply of raw materials but also costing down the biodiesel price. This study was conducted the measurement the combustion and thermal characteristics with mixing ratio of biodiesel/diesel fuel. In this study, flash points and fire points were measured by using Tag Closed cup apparatus and Cleveland open cup apparatus. As the result, flash points, fire points and AIT increased with percentage of more contained biodiesel.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions from diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong. In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel and oxygenates additives (dimethoxy methane) was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated direct injection diesel engine. The smoke emission of blending fuel (biodiesel fuel 90vol-% + DMM 10vol-%) was reduced in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 70% at 2500 rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have no large differences. But, NOx emissions from biodiesel fuel and DMM blended fuel were increased compared with commercial diesel fuel.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the basic flame behavior characteristics using the single fuel droplet combustion of diesel, palm-based biodiesel, and canola-based biodiesel. The results were compared and analyzed through the post processed image, which was applied the threshold level for removing noise in the raw image. The raw image was taken by a high-speed camera during the entire combustion process. At the same time, the maximum flame length, which was measured by the application code of the MATLAB program, the ignition delay, and the combustion period were compared and analyzed.

  • The effect of additives in the synthesis of biodiesel fuel using supercritical methanol was studied in order to examine the possibility of application of spent vegetable oil as a raw material, which has high contents of water or free fatty acid. The experiments were performed by varying the contents of water, free fatty acid or antioxidants respectively in a batch reactor. The contents of fatty acid methyl ester was analyzed by a gas chromatography. As the water contents increased, the contents of fatty acid methyl ester decreased, however, the decrease was very little compared with the alkaline and acid catalyst. The effect of the contents of free fatty acid, vitamin E, and ${\beta}$-carotene was negligible.

  • Biodiesel produced using microorganisms, which are recognized as the third-generation biomass, is among the various known renewable energy sources that can replace fossil fuels used in conventional transportation. Scenedesmus obliquus has been identified as an excellent species for biodiesel production, as it grows faster and can accumulate up to 40-50 percent of the dry cell weight. Enhancing production using S. obliquus requires measuring the cell mass for controlling the cultivation process. In the current study, S. obliquus was cultured for 75 days, and growth changes of the microalgae were measured by absorbance, microscopic imaging, and Raman spectroscopy. Between days 60 to 75 of culture, the change in absorbance was observed to be less than 3%, whereas the number of microalgae observed microscopically was more than three times higher. Moreover, the Raman spectroscopy results showed three strong peak values of β-carotene at 997 cm-1, 1148 cm-1, and 1515 cm-1, with peak values of β-carotene showing greater than 3-fold increase during the culture period. Therefore, we predict that application of Raman spectroscopy will help in identifying the growth elements and growth degree in microalgae culture during increased biomass production.

  • FAMEs produced from vegetable oil via transesterification reaction were known as alternative fuels. Lubrication and Wear properties of FAMEs were investigated to confirm the alternative possibility as lubricating base oil. In this study, lubrication properties and physical characteristics of mixture oils were examined using blended FAMEs(soybean, palm, waste oils) in two kinds of lubricating base oils. The oxidation stability of mixed samples were analyzed using ASTM D 2272 method and investigated for oxidation states of mixture oils after the shell four ball test. The results showed that the increase of FAMEs contents improved lubrication due to the intrinsic characteristics, however, increased the contents of oxidation which deteriorate the lubrication, and we found optimum mixture ratio as results of each base biodiesel (FAME).
