  • Due to the rapid energy consumption and fossil fuel abundance reduction, the world is progressively in need of alternative and renewable energy sources such as biodiesel. Biodiesel from microalgae offers high hopes to the scientific world for its potential as well as its non-competition with arable lands. Taking consideration to reduce the cost of production as well as to attain twin environmental goals of treatment and use of animal waste material the microalgal cultivation using piggery manure has been tested in this study. Unialgal strains such as Chlorella sp. JK2, Scenedesmus sp. JK10, and an indigenous mixed microalgal culture CSS were cultured for 20 days in diluted piggery manure using Small Scale Raceway Pond (SSRP). Biomass production and lipid productivity of CSS were $1.19{\pm}0.09gL^{-1}$, $12.44{\pm}0.38mgL^{-1}day^{-1}$, respectively and almost twice that of unialgal strains. Also, total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiencies of CSS was 93.6% and 98.5% respectively and 30% higher removal efficiency compared to the use of unialgal strains. These results indicate that the piggery manure can provide microalgae necessary nitrogen and phosphorus for growth thereby effectively treating the manure. In addition, overall cost of microalgal cultivation and subsequently biodiesel production would be significantly reduced.

  • Availability of reliable and affordable energy supply is a prerequisite for economic growth. Renewables are the third largest contributor to global electricity production after coal and natural gas and account for a share of 18%. Power generating capacity from renewables has increased to around 900GW by the year 2007. Today biodiesel fuels have been in commercial use in many countries and recently the world-wide biodiesel market has experienced considerable growth, which is partly due to various tax concession programs and other financial incentives. In Korea, biodiesel has already been used for transportation fuel, but not used for power generation fuel yet. Korean government has a strategy for renewable energy propagation, especially the goal of power generation amount by renewable energy is 3% of total power production by 2012. This paper focuses on the feasibility study for adaptability and strategy of using biodiesel as power generation fuel. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of thermal power plant, gas turbine and distributed power system. As the increase of biodiesel fuel, I look forward to environment-friendly power generation and the strategy of Renewable Portfolio Standards(RPS).

  • In this work, the mixture formation and atomization characteristics of biodiesel fuel were reviewed under various test conditions for the optimization of compression-ignition engine fueled with biodiesel. To achieve these, the effect of nozzle caviting flow, group-hole nozzle geometry and injection strategies on the injection rate, spray evolution and atomization characteristics of biodiesel were studied by using spray characteristics measuring system. At the same time, the fuel heating system was installed to obtain the effect of fuel temperature on the biodiesel fuel atomization. It was revealed that cavitation in the nozzle orifice promoted the atomization performance of biodiesel. The group-hole nozzle geometry and split injection strategies couldn't improve it, however, the different orifice angles which were diverged and converged angle of a group-hole nozzle enhanced the biodiesel atomization. It was also observed that the increase of fuel temperature induced the quick evaporation of biodiesel fuel droplet.

  • The low temperature characteristics of automotive diesel have been legally regulated due to the fact that solid particle in diesel at low temperature can cause severe problems in the vehicle. The biodiesel is well known for eco-friendly fuel, which is one of the most popular alternative petrodiesel, but it is easy to solidified at low temperature than petrodiesel at low temperature. For that reason, in this study, we investigated the low temperature fuel characteristics of diesel-biodiesel blends which were prepared to mix 6 different kinds of biodiesel to winter diesel fuel, respectively. Also, we confirmed to improve low temperature fuel characteristics by pour point depressant.

  • In this research, combustion and spray characteristics were investigated experimentally in a constant volume chamber by applying bio-diesel fuel to a common-rail system in which precise control is available for utilizing environmentally friendly properties of bio-diesel fuel. The experiment was conducted at fuel temperatures $20^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$ to investigate combustion characteristics of bio-diesel fuel provoking problems in fluidity specially in a low temperature. For the visualization, the experiment was carried out under various conditions of ambient pressure, injection pressure and fuel temperature. The test was made by three different types of diesel fuels, conventional diesel, BD20 and BD100. In summary, this research aims to investigate combustion characteristics in the application of bio-diesel fuels and compare the results with performance of conventional diesel fuel. This experimental data may provide fundamentals of spray and combustion of bio-diesel fuels at a low temperature and contribute to the development of bio-diesel engines in future.

  • Paraffin bio-based hydrotreated biodiesel(HBD) is originated from vegetable oil(the process can also be applied to animal fat) with the the chemical structure $C_nH_{2n+2}$. In the number of process of the oil or fat, the hydrogenation is significantly important to create a bio-based diesel fuel. This study is focused on lubricity characteristics of BTL diesel blends to use alternative diesel fuel in Korea. The BTL diesel are blended the different volume ratios (HBD 5(5 vol.% HBD - 95 vol.% diesel), HBD 10, HBD 20, HBD 30, HBD 40 and HBD 50. HBD with paraffin compounds showed a very high centane number, low sulfur content and free aromatic compound. Especially, the wear scar of HBD showed poor lubricity compared to automotive diesel due to the fuel composition, low sulfur content and free aromatic compound. Also, the lubricity specification of automotive diesel with different six HBD blends is within the limit by the Korean standards. Finally, HBD as an alternative diesel fuel is challengeable in transportation sector of Korea.

  • Spray characteristics of conventional diesel fuel and bio-diesel fuel(methyl-ester of soybean oil) were compared, in terms of spray tip penetration and spray angle, by using a commercial high pressure common rail injection system for light-duty DI Diesel engines. The experiments were carried out under the non-evaporating condition at ambient density(8.8, $15.6 kg/\textrm{m}^3$) and injection pressure(75, 135 MPa). The experimental method was based on a laser sheet scattering technique. Spray tip penetrations of bio-diesel fuel were longer, on the whole, than those of conventional diesel fuel, except for lower injection pressure(75 MPa) under lower ambient density$(8.8 kg/\textrm{m}^3)$. But spray near angle and spray far angle of bio-diesel fuel were smaller than those of conventional diesel fuel, implying spray angle is related to the growth rate of spray tip penetration. The experimental results of spray tip penetration agreed well with the calculated values by the Wakuri et al.'s correlation based on the momentum theory.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of properties of diesel and biodiesel fuels on the nozzle cavitation and the effect of the length/diameter(L/D) ratio on internal and external flow pattern of nozzle at the various injection conditions. In order to study the effect of the L/D ratio on the nozzle cavitation characteristics of diesel and biodiesel, the characteristics of cavitation flow in the nozzle are visualized and analyzed at the injection pressure of 0.1 MPa to 0.7 MPa by using the visualized images. It was founded that the cavitation was formed in the nozzle orifice at the low injection pressure and the breakup of the issuing liquid jet was promoted at the low L/D ratio. When the L/D ratio decrease, cavitation beginning and growth were affect by cavitation number and Reynolds number.

  • The interest on the utilization of landfill gases and biogases for energy production has been increasing due to environment concerns and global warming caused by burning fossil fuels, renewable nature of these gases. Using those synthesis gases to generate energy with engine encourages more efficient collection reducing emissions into the atmosphere and generates revenues for the operators. However the lower calorific value of synthesis gases than that of LPG or CNG affects the combustion stability and power output. Thus it becomes necessary to address disadvantages involved by studying synthesis gases in technological perspective. This paper discussed synthesis gas as a fuel for 60kW dual-fuel engine to produce power in an effective way. The methane diluted with $N_2$ was used as a fuel and developed ECU and injector driver facilitated the investigations with diesel fuel.
