  • Purpose: The current study aimed to evaluate the reliability for the combined refractive power when a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens were overlapped in a trial frame. Methods: The refractive powers, central thickness and peripheral thickness of spherical trial lenses and cylindrical lenses with negative power were measured. The combined refractive power of the spherical and cylindrical lenses was measured by auto lens meter. Measurement was repeated by changing the insertion order, and their results were further compared with the calculated combined refractive power. Results: There was no correlation between the variation of central and peripheral thickness in trial lenses and that of the lens power. Among 79 trial lenses, 3 trial lenses wasn't met the international standard. The refractive power calculated by Gullstrand's formula that could compensate vertex distance had smaller difference with the estimated power when compared with that calculated by thin lens formula however, it was significantly different from the estimated power. The refractive powers were generally apparent regardless of the insertion order of a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens: thin lens formula > actual measurements > Gullstrand's formula. The error was only found in cylindrical power calculated by Gullstrand's formula when inserted a spherical lens inside and a cylindrical lens outside however, the error was found in both of cylindrical and spherical powers calculated by Gullstrand's formula when inserted as a opposite order. By comparing actual measurements of equivalent spherical power, the accuracy was higher and the possibility of over-correction was lower when inserted a spherical lens inside and a cylindrical lens outside. Conclusions: From the results, those were revealed that the combined refractive power is influenced by the factors other than the vertex distance and the refractive power varies in accordance with the insertion order of a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens. Thus, it can be suggested that the establishment of standard for these is neccesaty.

  • Due to the fact that fish-eye lens can provide super wide angles with the minimum number of cameras, field-of-view over 180 degrees, many vehicles are attempting to mount the camera system. Camera calibration should be preceded, and geometrical correction on the radial distortion is needed to provide the images for the driver's assistance. However, vehicle fish-eye cameras have diagonal output images rather than circular images and have asymmetric distortion beyond the horizontal angle. In this paper, we introduce a camera model and metric calibration method for vehicle cameras which uses feature points of the image. And undistort the input image through a perspective projection, where straight lines should appear straight. The method fitted vehicle fish-eye lens with different field of views.

  • Polymethyl methacrylate is commonly used in the outer lens of automotive rear lamps. However, if the lens warps above the allowable limit, it may lead to faulty connection with the housing, and failure of the assembly. This study investigated the effects of gate diameter and cooling line distance in the mold design for automotive outer lens. The optimal gate diameter and cooling line distance to minimize the warp of the outer lens were derived as 3.0 mm and 50-60 mm respectively, and the cooling temperature to minimize warp was shown to be $60-80^{\circ}C$ (mold surface temperature $48-67^{\circ}C$). A higher cooling temperature may somewhat mitigate the warp, but is undesirable because it may cause injection molding problems, such as sinks. A mold was constructed matching the optimal design and the produced lens properties, particularly the degree of warp, were comparable with the CAE predictions.

  • This study aimed to analyze the conception of an extra-solar planet perceived by university students. To conduct this, we developed an extra-solar planet education program and questionnaires which help to figure out changes between before and after the program, and then applied them to the targeted students. The results of the study are as follows. First, as to the conception of an extra-solar planet, participants understood it merely as a planet outside the solar system before they got training. However, they expanded it to the one revolving around a star that appears outside the solar system based on keywords after the training. Second, they gave brief responses regarding exploration strategies (e.g., observing the extra-solar planet by using the Doppler effect, dietary phenomenon, and gravitational lens) based on indirect experiences they encountered in the media. The responses indicated their lack of concept of the extra-solar planet exploration methods. However, their recognition of the extra-solar planet observation became concrete while students learned about the exploration of the extra-solar planet. Third, they were expanding the importance of the exoplanet observation simply beyond the discovery of extraterrestrial life to the creative process and research methods, including the solar system and the development of humanity. Fourth, they recognized that exoplanet education is necessary for curriculum as it will be able to bring about students' interest and curiosity as well as scientific knowledge if contents related to the extra-solar planet appear in the earth science curriculum.

  • A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the vibration of diaphragm, such as the contact lenses fitted on the eyes, being subjected to the external sinusoidal pressure. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the wave equations. Turbo-C and graphic software, formulated to describe the dependence of the various parameters involved in the vibration. The model predicts the radial distribution of amplitude, frequency dependence of both average displacement amplitude and the power of diaphragm whose edge is being either simply supported or rigidly clamped in vibration. The effect of variables such as thickness, radius, damping coefficients on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. As the frequency of driving pressure increases above the certain value determined by the boundary conditions and parameters the wave shape or pattern changes from simple arc to belly or loops having double antinode. It seems that the effect of outer antinode progressively increases as the frequency increases. If this kind of phenomena occurs to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it may cause an abnormal correction power in the lenses or pull off the eye due the increased rise of outer part of the lens.

  • Wave drag reduction due to the repetitive laser induced energy deposition over a flat-nosed cylinder is experimentally conducted in this study. Irradiated laser pulses are focused by a convex lens installed in side of the in-draft wind tunnel of Mach 1.94. The maximum frequency of the energy deposition is limited up to 80. Time-averaged drag force is measured using a low friction piston which was backed by a load cell in a cavity as a controlled pressure. Stagnation pressure history, which is measured at the nose of the model, is synchronized with corresponding sequential schlieren images. With cylinder model, amount of drag reduction is linearly increased with input laser power. The power gain only depends upon the pulse energy. A drag reduction about 21% which corresponds to power gain of energy deposition of approximately 10 was obtained.

  • The annual borate production in Turkey is about 3 million tons, which occupies approximately 61 percent of total annual world production. Turkey has five boron deposits including Bigadic, Emet, Kestelek, Kirka, and Sultancayir. At present, Bigadic, Emet, and Kirka deposits are operating. Kirka boron deposit is distributed within volcanoclatic sedimentary group as mainly layered, rarely brecciated and massive types. Major borate is borax associated with colemanite and ulexite. They show a horizontal symmetrical zonation from Na borate (borax) in the center of deposit to Na-Ca borate (ulexite) and Ca-borate (colemanite) in margin. Bigadic boron deposit is known as the largest colemanite deposit in the world. This deposit occurs as two borate bearing horizons in Miocene volcanoclastic sedimentary group. Thickness ranges from several meters to 100 meter with a length of several hundreds meters. Borate ore bodies which are mainly composed of colemanite and ulexite are alternated with claystone, mudstone, tuff and layered limestone as lenticular shape. Sultancayir boron deposit is mainly distributed within gray limestone. Main borate minerals of this deposit are pandermite and ulexite. Pandermite and ulexite occur as colloform aggregate and small veinlet, respectively. Turkish boron deposits are evaporite deposit which were formed in Miocene playa-lake environment. Boron was supplied to the deposits by the volcanic and hydrothermal activities.

  • The Sungsan clay deposits have been formed by the hydrothermal alteration of volcanic and volcanoclastic rocks of the Hwangsan Formation of Cretaceous age. Claystones are mainly composed of dickite, alunite, illitic minerals and tosudite. The mineralogical properties of clay minerals have been studied using X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and infrared absorption analysis. The physicochemical condition for the clay deposits also have been studied by the activity diagrams and mineral assemblages. Dickite, the dominant mineral in clay deposits, occurs generally as massive aggregates. It shows book-structure of well-defined hexagonal plates. Chemistry of dickite agrees with its ideal formula. Peak depth ratios in infrared absorption spectra were used for discrimination between pure and mixture of kaolin minerals. Five hydrothermal alteration zones are divided according to the mineral assemblages. From center to margin, alunite, dickite, illite and albite zones are discernible. Quartz zone occurs as small lenticular form in dickite zone. The formation of dickite and illite zones are promoted by decreasing $a_{k^+}$. An increase in $a_{H_{2}SO_{4}}$ or $a_{K_{2}SO_{4}}$ is required for the formation of alunite zone. Estimated temperature of formation ranges 110-270 $^{\circ}C$
