Problems and Improvement of Provincial Rotation Hunting System in Korea (우리나라 도별(道別) 순환수렵제도(循環狩獵制度)의 문제점(問題點)과 개선방향(改善方向))

  • This study was conducted to investigate the status and problems, and suggest the proper improvement of provincial rotation hunting system in Korea. There were many problems in recently provincial rotation hunting system, such as, difficulty of budget interiority, low participation rate of hunters, low specialization degree of officers on their job, and extremity of illegal capture of wildlife by the absence of wildlife manager. The municipal hunting system, which have many merits, such as, increase of hunters' participation and income of municipality, creation of engagement, and prohibit of illegal capture of wildlife would be suggest for the improvement of hunting system.

  • Increasing of the number of Roe Deer in Jesudo is regarded as an direct cause of the damages of Roe Deer - i.e. damages of crops and trees by Roe Deer and traffic accidents between human and Roe Deer. But, no study of the number of Roe Deer in Jejudo has been found and never has been progressed it and nobody convinces about the total number of Roe Deer in Jejudo. In this paper, we focus at the moving pressure which enforces Roe Deer to move the other places. Moving pressure is appeared when the habitat environment destruction of Roe Deer and it forces Roe Deer in hilly section to move the middle mountains section and the low section. This moving pressure promotes the moving of Roe Deer to the other places and then the total number of Roe Deer in new places are increasing. High density of Roe Deer makes the habitat environment bad and increases the competition of Roe Deer. These patterns are repeated continuously. The habitat environment of Roe Deer is related with human life area very closely. We should keep and preserve our nature and environment, and if we develop our nature then we must consider our ecosystem in all aspects. It's the most important thing to us and Roe Deer and other living things.

A study of avifauna around Shin-po areas, Hamkyungbuk-do, North Korea (북한 함경북도 신포 지역 조류상 연구)

  • Fauna of Shinpo nuclear powerplant site were surveyed during Feb 27-Mar 4, 2003 as a part of ecological environmental survey. This area is well dominated by coniferous trees (Pinus densiflora) aging 15-50 years. In the shoreline black pine (P. thungergii) is the dominant species and was planted for wind protection. Around Shinpo areas inside 50 km in radius was found 170 bird species (18 orders, 40 families) were recorded. Natural monument in the areas were included white-stork(Cygonia boyciana) estimated 8 species of birds. Although the habitat of Shinpo area is deteriorated due to deforestation, illegal hunting, etc. the fauna seems to be rich in species. Despite the sudden halt of KEDO(Korea Peninsula Energy Development Organization) project the conservation efforts and continuous monitoring are required considering a continuation of the project.

A Study of Mammal and Amphibians-Reptile Species Around Shin-Po Areas, Hamkyungbuk-Do, North Korea (북한 함경북도 신포 지역 포유류 및 양서파충류 조사 연구)

  • Fauna of Shinpo nuclear powerplant site were surveyed during Feb 27-Mar 4, 2003 as a part of ecological environmental survey. Animal species identification by co-amplification of hypervariable region 1 (HV1) and cytochrome b in mitochondrial DNA

  • Mitochondrial DNA (mt DNA) sequence analysis has been a useful tool for species identification of animals and human individuals. Two hypervariable regions (HV1 and HV2) in control region of mitochondrial genome were analyzed for human individual identification. In case of animal species identification, several genes on mt DNA such as cytochrome b (cytb), RNAs, cytochrome oxidases (CO) were used. In this study, co-amplification of HV1 and cytb was carried out in order to check the contamination of animal DNA and to verify the human DNA. The primer sets used in PCR were H15997/L16236 for HV1 and H14724/L15149 for cytb. PCR products for HV1 and cytb were 239 bp and 425 bp, respectively. The appearance of two bands on agarose gel implied the DNA came from human, however the single band of cytb gene represented the non-human animal DNA.

A case study of the habitat expansion of the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) (반달가슴곰의 서식지 확대 사례)

  • Habitat loss by industrialization, urbanization, and poaching reduced the population of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetabus ussuricus) population in South Korea in the late 20th Century. In the early 2000s, the Korean Government had begun a restoration project of Asiatic black bear. In 2017, a bear was found in Mt. Sudosan, Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, approximately 80 km from Mt. Jirisan where the bear was first released. Genetic analysis confirmed that this bear was one of the Jirisan bear population, estimating that this bear escaped from its habitat. After trapping this bear in Mt. Sudosan, it was rereleased again in Mt. Jirisan, but this bear moved again to Mt. Sudosan. After 2nd trapping and releasing, this bear came back to Mt. Sudosan. In Mt. Sudosan, this bear covered a greater distance and moved more as compared to other Asiatic black bear in Mt. Jirisan. Today, this bear has its home range within Mt. Sudosan area after the third release, estimating that this bear is stable and active in this area. Our findings are the first case showing the interesting pattern of repetitive disperse activities and habitat expansion of Asiatic black bear. The results of this case are valuable information that can be used for wildlife conservation and restoration of endangered wildlife.

Release Strategy for the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) Restoration Project in Korea Based on Population Viability Analysis (개체군 생존력 분석을 이용한 여우복원사업 방사전략)

  • The red fox (Vulpes vulpes), listed as a Class I endangered species by the Ministry of Environment of Korea, has been considered to be extinct in South Korea since the 1980s, and an intensive restoration project has been underway in Sobaeksan national park. This study was carried out to develop a suitable model for the red fox reintroduction program based on Population viability analysis (PVA) by using the VORTEX program. If 10 animals (5 females and 5 males) were continuously released into the initial zero population every year for 10 years, population growth rate and extinction probability over the next 50 years after the introduction of the population were $0.018{\pm}0.204$ and 0.354, respectively; the maximum population size was 116.34 at the 16th year after the first release, and a reduction rate of 1.22 every year from the 17th year was inferred. We found that additional releases would be needed from the 17th year after the initial release to maintain a positive growth rate and to prevent the extinction of the released red foxes, and releasing more than 12 individuals every year would be needed for the long-term, continuous existence of red foxes. By contrast, if fewer than 6 red fox individuals were released the extinction probability over the next 50 years was more than 80%. To maintain the minimum population growth rate, the release of more than 8 individuals were needed for positive population growth. The population growth rate was more stable when 10 animals in the change of their sex rate every year from the set value were released as the female-to- male sex ratio of 6:4 rather than 1:1. However, if the female-biased sex ratio was increased by more than 7:3, a negative population growth was expected. The occurrence rate of roadkill and poaching are important factors in the red fox restoration project. The extinction probability was decreased to 30% if each factor was decreased to 3% based on the standard baseline; however, if each factor was increased to more than 3%, an extinction rate of about 90% was reached over the next 50 years.
