Conventional feature of seismic classification focuses on strong seismic classification, while it is not suitable for classifying micro-seismic waves. We propose a feature extraction method based on histogram and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in frequency-time space suitable for classifying seismic waves including strong, micro, and artificial seismic waves, as well as noise classification. The proposed method essentially employs histogram and PCA based features by concatenating the frequency and time information for binary classification which consist strong-micro-artificial/noise and micro/noise and micro/artificial seismic waves. Based on the recent earthquake data from 2017 to 2018, effectiveness of the proposed feature extraction method is demonstrated by comparing it with existing methods.
The purpose of this study is to propose a method that can reliably evaluate the fundamental period of a rockfill dam using the micro-earthquake records, which were obtained at the domestic dam sites. For total 20 micro-earthquake records obtained at 7 domestic rockfill dam sites against 6 earthquake events which recently occurred, the fundamental periods of seven rockfill dams were evaluated by two kinds of methods; one is a method using acceleration amplification ratio and the other is a method using acceleration response spectrum ratio. Applicability of each method to evaluation of fundamental periods of domestic rockfill dams was examined. In the moderate seismicity region like our country, the method using acceleration response spectrum ratio, which could evaluate the fundamental period of the rockfill dam using the ratio between the response spectrum for acceleration observed at the dam crest and that observed at the dam base or abutment, proved to be reliable and was proposed in this study. From the results of analyses, it was found that the proposed method could consistently evaluate the fundamental period of the rockfill dam and the results obtained by the proposed method were very similar to the results by the existing method which was proposed from the analysis for the earthquake records observed at Japanese dam sites.
It was introduced a seismic mini-array that could monitor microseismicity efficiently and analyzed seismic data obtained from the mini-array that was operated from December 19, 2012 to January 9, 2013. The mini-array consisted of a six channel data logger, a central 3 components seismometer, and a tripartite array of vertical sensors centered around the 3 components seismometer as an equilateral triangle with about 100 m aperture. All seismometers that had the same instrument response were connected a 6 channel data logger, which was set to record seismograms at a sampling rate of 200 sps. During the three weeks of campaign, a total of 16 microearthquakes were detected. Using time differences of P wave arrivals from the vertical components, S-P time from 3 components seismometers, and back azimuth from the seismic array analysis, it was possible to locate the hypocenter of the microearthquake even with one seismic miniarray. The epicenters of two nearest microearthquakes were a quarry site located 1.3 km from the mini-array. The records of quarry blasting confirmed the our analysis.

The purpose of this study is to ensure microseismic data acquisition technique for hydraulic fracturing imaging at the site of shale gas development. For this, microseismic data acquisition was performed during hydraulic fracturing and artificial blasting at a site bearing shale layers. Measured microseismic event data during the hydraulic fracturing have the very small amplitude of 0.001 mm/sec ~ 0.003 mm/sec and the frequency contents of 5 Hz ~ 20 Hz range. Meanwhile microseismic event data acquired during artificial blasting have the bigger amplitude (0.011 mm/sec ~ 0.302 mm/sec) than hydraulic fracturing event data and their frequency contents have the range of 5 Hz ~ 2 kHz. For microseismic data acquisition design, the selection of appropriate instrumentation including sensors and the recording system, the determination of sensor array and the deployment range were investigated based on the theoretical data and field application experiences.
In this study, our purpose is to develop a technique to discriminate artificial explosions from local microearthquakes on the basis of time-frequency domain. To obtain spectral features of artificial explosions and microearthquakes, we used 3-d spectrograms(frequency, time and amplitude) because this is a useful tool to study the frequency content of entire seismic waveforms observed at local and regional distances (e. g., Kim et al., 1994). P and S waves from quarry blasts show that frequency content of dominant amplitude appeared above 10 Hz and Rg phases that are observed at near distance ranges. But P and S waves from microearthquakes have more broad frequency content as well as below 10 Hz. And for discrimination, Pg/Lg spectral ratio is performed below 10 Hz. In order to select time windows we computed group velocity using multiple filter method(MFM) and removed free surface effects from all 3-components data for improving on data quality. Next step, we computed Fast-Fourier transform, and a log average spectral amplitude over seven frequency bands : 0.5 to 3, 2 to 4, 3 to 5, 4 to 6, 5 to 7, 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 Hz. The best separation is observed from 6 to 8 Hz.

A cluster of micro-earthquakes in the transition zone between the continental and oceanic crust in the East Sea was relocated using the Joint Hypocenter Determination (JHD) method. In order to increase the number of available earthquakes and to take advantage of the high detection capability of the Korea National Seismic Network (KNSN), continuously recorded seismic data were reviewed to identify 56 micro-earthquakes occurring in a 20 km ${\times}$ 20 km region. The initial earthquake hypocenters were determined using a routine single event location method. Single event locations do not reveal any significant structures in the study area. After relocating the earthquake hypocenters using the JHD technique, the earthquakes were clustered and four potential faults responsible for earthquake generation in the subsurface were delineated. They are defined by two sub-vertical and two steeply south-dipping seismicities located next to each other.

Small to large earthquakes have been reported in Gyeongju and its vicinity in southeast Korea during historical period as well as instrumental observation period. We identified and located more than 300 earthquakes that occurred between January 2010 and December 2014 in a $20km{\times}30km$ area, but were unreported because of their small magnitudes. We used the Joint Hypocenter Determination (JHD) method to minimize the influence of the differences between the actual earth structure and 1-D velocity model for earthquake locations. The potential relationship between the previously reported Quaternary faults and the earthquake hypocenters was investigated. Many micro-earthquakes were found to be located in the southern segment of the Yeonil Tectonic Line, the Seokup fault, and the Waup basin boundary faults.
Using the microearthquake data acquired from 1995 to 1996 through the seismic network operated by the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials (KIGAM), the three P-wave velocity models proposed by Lee (1979), Kim·Kim (1983) and Kim·Jung (1985) concerning the structure of the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula were examined in terms of the least square errors of the P-wave arrival times. The three models do not differ significantly in arrival time residuals except that the Lee's model gives slightly deeper focuses than the others. The layering of the crust of the peninsula is not clear as yet and to be studied by more earthquake and explosion data in the future.
From the seismic network data of the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials during 1995-1996, we derived a composite fault-plane solution of the microearthquakes occurred in the Yangsan fault area. The composite fault-plane solution of nine events shows the orientation of fault 15 ± 3°in strike, 60 ± 8°in dip and 140°in rake or 128 ± 3°in strike, 56 ± 8°in dip and 37°in rake. The compressional axis of the stress field trends ENE to WSW, and this field suggests strike-slip motion with thrust component. The result is consistent with the 1996 Yeong-weol event and the stress field in and around the Korean Peninsula, previously reported.
Fault plane solutions of the Iksan earthquake ($M_L=3.85$) and two aftershocks were obtained using the FOCMEC (FOCal MEChanism determination) program. The main event showed the characteristic of strike slip faulting with reverse component. It has the fault planes with NE-SW or NW-SE direction. This is similar to the fault characteristics of earthquake pattern in the inland area of the Korean Peninsula. In order to detect micro-earthquake events, continuous seismic waveform data of the thirteen seismic stations within a radius of 100km from epicenter were analyzed by PQLII program (PASSCAL, 2017) for the period from December 15, 2015 to January 22, 2016. The epicenters of nineteen micro-events were newly determined by Hypoinverse-2000 program. They are not concentrated along some lineaments or fault lines. The intensity of the Iksan earthquake was obtained by estimating the telephone inquiries, the degree of ground shaking or damage all around the southern peninsula. The instrumental intensity was also obtained using PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) records. As a result, the maximum MM intensity was estimated to be V near the epicenter.
