In this study, a curriculum design is proposed for the development of the information literate student. The framework of this curriculum derives form the US Information literacy standards for higher education 2000, the UK Information skills in higher education 2004, and Australian and New Zealand Information literacy framework 2004. The teaching plan and content is based on the information literacy programs of NMSU, CSU Hayward, and IUE. • The Purpose of this study was to discover the factors which motivate academic library users to use chat reference service and which demotivate academic library users to use chat reference service. To achieve the study purposes, this study conducted interview with the selected participants (Information Studies graduate students at Florida State University(FSU)) through email in April and May 2007. This study found that 1) convenience, 2) anonymity, and 3) inexpensiveness of the service served as incentives(motivators) for chat reference service consumers to use the service. On the other hand, chat reference service consumers mentioned the following factors as obstacles (demotivators) for using the service: 1) waiting time, 2) accessibility, 3) interface design, and 4) difficulties with expressing themselves in a virtual space.

  • The study designs and implements a KORMARC/EAD integrated system for the Myongji Digital Library Collections. The purpose of this paper is to design the metadata to Myongji Korean History Collections to provide digital information of high quality to clients, and to develop and implement a model for managing digital library collections. In order to test the model and the quality of the derived metadata, we built a metadata management system, which is connected to the existing KORMARC system. The system consists of two modules- a retrieval and an input module. While in the retrieve mode, one can retrieve KORMARC records of books and archival items, with links to modified EAD files for archival items or to image files for books, in the input mode, one can type two types of data such as a catalog data and an inventory data. Finally, we evaluated the proposed system via mail questionnaires, and propose three suggestions to make this system a much more comprehensive and effective system.

  • The purpose of this research was to derive a expansive curriculum management measure by analyzing the curriculum on the field of library and information service. To fulfill this goal, five major South Korean universities and four major US graduate schools were selected for comparison of the curriculum on information service. In addition, the research analyzed the required examination subjects for the employment of librarians of public library. The comparison was conducted to comprehend the curricular contents of an academic information service; the latter was to identify the curricular contents of information service required by the libraries. the analysis showed that the field of academic information service included the knowledge on the information source of each area(collection development, subject bibliography, etc.) and the knowledge on user analysis(information service, user-study, reading guidance, etc.) Moreover, the employment requirement of the manager-level national examination demanded a comprehensive knowledge on information service theories, subject sources and users. The findings confirmed the need to strengthen the special subject service education in the information service curriculum.

  • In the many countries including United States, numerous librarians participate as research project members and publish papers in related/non-LIS journals. In recent years, the quantity of papers published by librarians in LIS journals and the non-LIS journals is similar. This study analyzed whether librarians join the research team in various academic fields in South Korea, carry out the research together, and publish the papers in co-authorship. This study collected and analyzed 319 articles of the authors affiliated with libraries published in the last 10 years from the Korea Citation Index. As a result, there were not many articles published by the authors in the non-LIS journal. Nonetheless, specific examples of librarians collaborating closely with other disciplinary research teams were observed; Medicine, Architecture, Materials Engineering, etc. Librarians' contribution in research projects in South Korea is expected to increase in the future. Therefore, it is desirable to prepare for this such as opening courses on research projects in the library and the department of LIS which is training librarians as well.

  • Plan S is a policy that mandates research papers supported by specific funders such as the European Community be published in open access journals. The funder supports APC to researchers, providing a chance to advance the era of gold open access, and is expected to bring significant changes to the scholarly publishing ecosystem. This study explored the impact of Plan S from the perspective of each stakeholder of the scholarly publishing ecosystem, such as funders, academic societies or publishers, authors, and libraries, through a review of previous studies. In addition, the status of Korean gold open access publishing and position for each stakeholder were identified through the collected data analysis. As a result of the analysis, the share of publishing gold open access journals in Korea was 22%, which was less than 26% worldwide. Korean funding agencies were predicting and preparing for the impact of Plan S. On the other hand, Korean academic societies produce about 70% of all papers, but there are not many open access papers except medicine (51%). The response of the Korean library was not sufficient, and it contrasted with the activities of librarians in the U.S. that actively provide research support services based on the research lifecycle. It was suggested that Korean libraries should also actively try to change the role of librarians; advising researchers to plan open access publishing in grant project applications, consulting on copyrights, and so on. This study identified the background, principles, and impact of Plan S policy that would be effective in 2021 and examined the response situation in Korea. This study is valuable in that it served as the necessary basis for revitalizing the academic publishing ecosystem in Korea.
